Great performance, which really brings out the essence of this work - its brooding intensity, but also its moments of lyrical beauty. This and his violin concerto are surely his greatest orchestral works.
Yes it’s a mystery why so seldom this work is heard as is the lack of performances of Walton’s amazing concerto for cello & orchestra (my favourite) and his concerto for viola and orchestra.
This piece is indeed an exception in Britten's works. We can easily recognize his authetic style, but the overarching form, the way how the soloist and the orchestra build it, all is uite wonderful in thsi rather dark symphony.
I have to say that all things considered, this performance makes as good a case for this piece as any I've heard (including Britten's recording with Rostropovich). Wonderful clarity and transparency. Congratulations, all!
The Cello Symphony is a masterpiece and is here played masterfully. In reply to another writer I would say the reason it isn't played more often has less to do with its difficulty for cellists than its difficulty for audiences. Unlike his violin and piano concertos Britten's Cello Symphony isn't melodious. It pushes the bounds of tonality and many audiences find it too demanding and too dark. It's a counterpart to Schnittke's viola concerto, another underappreciated masterpiece.
That's what I thought, too, when I first heard it, and I agree with you. It took several listens for it to reveal itself to me. (a process still not complete). Now it is no longer even the same difficult piece but now feels very much like it is an extension of the themes from his violin concerto taken perhaps to the next level.
