I remember watching this movie under the moon in an outdoor 'theatre' (really just a projector and screen) the first time I visited the U.S. as a kid. It was one of my first experiences here and it left a lasting impression on me. I was too young to remember much but when I rediscovered it brought back some heavy nostalgia. I still distinctly remember the feeling of sharing a blanket with my two cousins and sitting under this huge tree with everyone else in the community park on Sunday nights to watch these movies. The Princess Bride was the first one, then came Betelgeuse and the Goonies, my favorites.
It isn't a fantasy satire. It's a satire to classical literature (yeah, no joke ... obviously that is lost in translation between book-movie). The fantasy is quite genuine.
of course Princess Bride is satire. Did you think it was serious? It's making fun of campy, soapy fantasy literature. It's full of sass. But it does it so well everyone thinks it's serious. Shrek is a satire of campy, soapy fantasy movies, aka, the old Disney. Shrek is a lot more potty-humour and less sass, but they're actually quite similar. The first two movies were pretty good with the satire, but now the series is a joke, hence the memeification. Also, Shrek was a book first. Fun facts. :3

The actor that plays the 11-fingered villain (Christopher Guest) also plays the guitarist in Spinal Tap who has an amplifier that "goes to 11" and is therefore louder than other amplifiers. Best joke in this trailer !

I'll keep an eye out and try to drag some ignorant friends (ie - those who haven't seen this movie). But I CAN'T understand why Valentine's day. Although you know, I think maybe this movie put me off romcoms. I'd go to all these romantic COMEDY movies with friends in my 20s and be really annoyed cos wouldn't laugh once. But maybe when your idea of a romantic comedy is The Princess Bride, well.... 😂
I once watched this movie in my class---I don't remember the lesson behind it, but when we watched it, I started mouthing every single line along with the movie, but before I knew it I was whispering it out loud, and everyone in the room was watching me. I'm a nerd.
I love how polite everyone was and the fact that Wesley gruesomely described how he was gonna cut off the 6 fingered guy's body parts while lying awkwardly on a bed without changing his tone or facial expressions. I came to watch it, expecting tense actions, gruesome deaths and torture, but no, it was a smooth, fun ride from beginning to end and I giggled at every scene.
He was talking to Humberding not Rugen. And yes that scene was amazing in both movie and book In the book id say it's even better since there he actually passes out for a sec while threatening Hunberding and Humberding still surrenders
+Greater History The Legend of Korra is a great show, it tackles a lot more serious and modern issues and is also a much darker show than it's predecessor, but Avatar has the better story, characters, and writing. Sorry, but ATLA > TLOK
+Juan Segura I completely disagree. Yeah TLOK isn't as good as Avatar was, but then again, not a lot of stuff is. It's hard to capture lightning in a bottle again when you already did it once. But even then, TLOK is still an amazing show and a great successor to one of the best TV shows of all time. What didn't help though was Nickelodeon's bullshit treatment of Korra. If they were fully behind it like they were Avatar and actually gave the creators more freedom or resources, it would have been even better.
Yeah, and some comedy is stale and outdated a month after it's written, even if it's good. In fact, most jokes lose their humor across time. Only some things stay recognizably funny. Case in point: I'll bet you could read any Shakespeare play and miss at least 50% of the jokes. There are things in there that don't sound like jokes _at all_, but that put people on the floor in his time. Comedy is neither universal nor eternal - it depends completely on shared factors. If those are not present, the joke cannot work.
There a number of reasons. Often comedy is based on surprise so seeing it again reduces the comedy value. Some humor is topical, so it's only funny at the time it was created and/or for the people from that situation. Also, sometimes jokes are funny due to pushing the edge, but years later the edge has been pushed so far, the original joke is passe. I remember watching Office Space in the theater and you could tell who worked in an office and who didn't by who you saw laughing. No one under 18 laughed at all, but most of the adults did. Likewise, when Blazing Saddles made the campfire scene was majorly subversive, now fart jokes are barely funny.
I loved Office Space and I watched it for the first time a couple years ago and I've never worked in an office. I understood the jokes by listening to a lot of people gripe about office work in the '90s.
I DID see this in the theater - my first ever proper boyfriend took me on my first ever proper date - to this movie when it was first released - ie at movies, on the big screen, at the theater. will always have a special place in my heart
Lol, I made a deal with mine that I'd go see Full Metal Jacket with him in exchange for us seeing a movie of my choosing at a later date, with no veto option. He complained the whole way there, in line to get tickets & snacks, then while we say waiting for it to start. He was all smiles by the time we left! (Both of those movies are now two of my top three of all time.)
The bit about the book's title is absolutely right. When my dad first said to me: "We should watch The Princess Bride." I responded with "That sounds stupid."

That's a lovely memory!
sounds like a special time cool.
although princess bride is meant to be a satire, it feels like a true fantasy but with strong characters.
I agree, I really like all the characters in this movie. Serious or not.
It isn't a fantasy satire. It's a satire to classical literature (yeah, no joke ... obviously that is lost in translation between book-movie). The fantasy is quite genuine.
you'll never see a movie like this emerge out of hollywood's lazy ass these days , unless it's a crappy remake
of course Princess Bride is satire. Fun facts. :3
Well this movie isn't love or life soo I guess your right

But even then, TLOK is still an amazing show and a great successor to one of the best TV shows of all time. What didn't help though was Nickelodeon's bullshit treatment of Korra. this movie is funny even today
Why would you even say that? Good comedy is universal. Even The Odyssey has some bits that are funny across millennia and languages.
DavidtheWavid im saying that some movies loose their charm and humour with time. This is not the case
