There’s actually a lot of depth to this scene, and I really like that.
For one thing, when Vizzini starts talking about Westley relying on his strength to save him, you can see Westley start to get flustered, because Vizzini’s really close to the truth, not to mention the guy’s next words are “you’re trying to get me to give something away.”
Furthermore, Vizzini doesn’t drink from his goblet until Westley drinks from his, figuring that if Westley is willing to drink from his goblet, he must’ve chosen correctly when he switched the cups.

His downfall was assuming that the rules were that the poison had to be in one goblet or the other. The game was to determine where the poison was, and to then take a drink. The vagueness opens up different opportunities from both sides. Wesley could've not poisoned either goblet and hoped for Vizzini to panic and give up. Vizzini could've chosen to drink directly from the bottle, as Wesley did not specify from where he had to drink. So by assuming that certain rules were set into place that weren't there, he fell for a trap.
For a self-proclaimed genius, Vizzini wasn't much of an "out of the box" thinker.

He didn’t figure it out at all. It’s actually surprising how stupid he was here. One of the first things he should’ve thought of was the possibility that perhaps both goblets were poisoned. His over analysis of everything is highly convoluted and makes very little sense, relying on far too much guesswork on Vizzini’s part, much of it coming from nowhere. Vizzini’s reasoning is quite narrow, as he doesn’t see any other possibilities other than one goblet or the other being poisoned. The way Wesley words the question leaves numerous solutions Vizzini clearly didn’t think of. Wesley asks where the poison is, not which goblet it is in. He could’ve put it in one, both, even neither, and as an alternative, Vizzini could’ve drank from the bottle the wine was poured in as a truly clever method of outsmarting Wesley. He is not nearly as bright as he thinks he is and the only reason he might have been considered smart was because the other two men working with him weren’t exactly the brightest bulbs.

Not only that, but you can see Westley tense up. His smile fades, he figets with his hand, and swallows nervously. He is almost found out. It's a great, subtle bit of acting.

Vizzini even got it right when he guessed Wesley poisoned his own cup and planned to tank the poison. But Vizzini was so nervous he distracted himself with further speculation.

It's so much fun listening to Vizzini evaluate the situation even though it's obvious he didn't really know where the poison was and had to resort to the classic "Hey, what's that?" trick.

I just love the fact that Wesley sits there the whole time knowing that either drink he picks, it doesn’t matter because he poisoned them both. 😂👍

The funny thing is that there is a safe choice: the bottle, but Wesley successfully fooled him into thinking the battle was that only one cup was poisoned.

The moral of this scene: How do you outwit someone smarter than you? Simple: You show them what they expect to see.
This scene illustrates the fatal weakness of narcissism and how the protagonist exploited that weakness. Smart though his opponent was, the problem with narcissists is they tend to take what people say at face value because they consider it impossible that they could ever be fooled. He lost because he took the challenge at face value. Had he considered the challenge wasn't what it appeared to be, he could have called the protagonist out and won.

Another layer to this whole scene is that, once Westley sat down, vizzini was already dead. At that distance, Westley could have drawn his blade and killed vizzini before he could draw his knife. Or, he could have just jumped over the rock and tackled vizzini before he could react. No matter what vizzini did, the outcome was already decided.

The moral of this comment: use a dictionary so you don’t misuse words like “narcissism” and pay attention in school so you don’t conflate pseudo-intellects like Vizzini for “smart”. Foolish comment OP, sorry.

@@terradraca first of all it irritates me that so many people take what clearly represents/symbolizes pseudo-intellectualism as “smart”. It’s a sad comment on our culture that consumes comedy/entertainment(daily show , Fox News) for politics and listens to fools like Jordan Peterson as “intellectuals”. Before the drinking stand off, Westley grinned while saying “really” when Vizzini called Aristotle and Socrates m0r0ns. He knew that he wasn’t truly a smart person therefore he could fool him.
What truly triggers me is mental illness stigma. People keep using mental illness as synonyms for character defect. Most mentally ill people on average have better character in my experience than those without. As the Bible relates, it’s the tree of knowledge and temptation that leads to evil. Not incompetent sick people. Vizzini and the hundreds of other people you diagnosis as narcissists, are not narcissists. I’ve read Freuds entire essay on narcissism, he coined the term. It is a personality disorder. Narcissists are rarely ever successful or powerful, they have fundamentally dysfunctional personalities that makes it difficult to form relationships or communicate.
Vanity, conceit, solipsism , are better words. But your idea of narcissism sounds like it was lifted from buzzfeed. Just pure psychobabble . You’ve never read a treatise on narcissism.
