Watched this yesterday for the first time. Really impressed with this - builds up very nicely and has an outstanding last forty minutes. I liked how you thought you knew who the main villain was UNTIL an hour into it.

I’m so glad to hear that you liked this one. I kept trying to talk people into watching this and it felt like no one was interested in the film.

@@manvfilm I remember it being released in VHS (for some reason I got it muddled up with Cohen and Tate which was also excellent), but it never grabbed me. I just watched it on Prime - very poor quality so it's inspired me to get the Blu-ray.

Glad to hear it. I loved the ending and the tension and suspense it brought. I also thought the car chase was great, especially when the car got stuck.

A most unusual gangster/crime film. This gets my vote for the strangest but most memorable end credits as well

Great film. I saw it on ITV in the late 80's. They showed it over 2 nights, the extended version. The getaway scene is classic! :) Bernard Hill is excellent. One of his best performances. Same with Derek Newmark is the gang boss. Very underrated actor. Sad that alcoholism derailed his career...

Hey Chris, Bernard Hill owns every scene he is in. The Getaway is a standout. That time waiting for the plane to take off killed me.

Thank you Graham, Great Great recommendation. I am seriously getting addicted to this boutique label. Watched Scum the other day, and again yet another excellent restoration. Keep the recommendations coming.

I’m so glad someone took me up on this recommendation. I’ve been championing it for a while. Really glad you enjoyed it.
Indicator might not be the flashiest company with titles but I really do love their output.

Yeah I saw the premiere at a LFF back in the day. Nice little film - especially enjoyed Hill and good old Ken Bones being extremely dodgy.

That must’ve been a great cinema screening. Loved the film, it was proper tense at the end!

bellman and true is actually much longer than this movie version as it was made for tv but was released as a cinema film.

I had read that. To be fair it is pretty concise.

Spoiler below. This indeed was an excellent film with excellent (as you mentioned) characters -- especially the Bad Guys. The Bellman was particularly nasty, a ghastly individual. And there was the ugly Gort. His disturbingly shocking accidental death during the heist was just gruesome. It could not have happened to a nicer guy.
P.S. I actually ran across a used copy of the book "Bellman and True" at a half-price store. Ha... It was in the children's literature section!

@@manvfilm Yes, I bought it -- for $1.00. It had been erroneously placed in the children's section because of the "bellman and true" nursery rhyme. The author was Desmond Lowden, and the movie was highly faithful to the book. The book opens, "The man and the boy walked down the street with their cases. It was dark, October had come suddenly to London. And it was quiet, the Earl's Court hotels were small and sad..." The film's opening, in blurry slow motion, conveyed the book's spirit perfectly. Interesting read, interesting movie.

I picked it up in the Indicator sale for £9.99. I know they’ll have another sale around Oct/Nov. I guess it’s whether you can wait to save a few quid or not.
