    How to Tie - Tying a Metal Thimble into a Rope Using a Simple Knot (Magnet Fishing) Non Splicing Method.
    Fishing Magnets and Thimbles: igkt-solent.co....
    A short while ago I was contacted by a viewer who wanted to know how to tie a rope to his Fishing Magnet, so that it was secure and would not fray. The simplest solution was to tie a Poachers Noose or Scaffold knot around a metal thimble. The beauty of the Poachers Noose is that it will secure itself snugly to the metal thimble. The thimble used in the video is quality stainless steel and does not attract a magnet. I cheaper option may be a nylon thimble.

      I have as yet to do fishing knots, the trouble is the small line. I do however plan to see if I can do some of the knots in a larger line. I have seen some videos on fishing knots and they are rather difficult to see. I am sure that as a fisherman you have some good knot knowledge. I often sit watching TV with a piece of rope and practice my knots, do you do that when fishing?

    I swear google is listening to everything lol. I recently picked up a cheap £20 fishing Magnet from eBay and wasn't happy with the rope being attached to a D-Ring and that connects to the magnet hoop. So I was doing a search for "how to tie a 6mm rope to a magnet hoop" didn't really get anything but open up RUclips today and yours was the first suggest video to watch lol.
    Im a complete beginner, so have no idea what to expect, other than others comments that the magnet came off first throw in the water. Hence why I was looking for a stronger or better way to tie the rope to the hoop. Thank you for a clear and precise video.

      @@plemas A fishing magnet is for fishing for steel etc in rivers. In the UK there are a lot of canals, and over the years stuff was dumped in them. So there is now a "sport" of magnet fishing for treasure. The best fishing spots are near bridges, as lots of stuff was thrown from them. You can find stuff from and old shopping trolley to guns and knives etc. There are a number of YT channels on the subject and some of the finds are interesting.

    • @KnottingKnots
      @KnottingKnots  6 лет назад

      I do not see why not. I think the main concern would be to ensure that the thimble is nicely rounded off where it meets the rope, so that it does not cut into it as it tightens. Obviously splicing would be even more secure, as a splice is stronger. There is a strength of knot chart here: igkt-solent.co.uk/strength-knot-chart/

    Did you recommend a plastic or non-ferrous thimble because I can see a minor problem otherwise.

    • @KnottingKnots
      @KnottingKnots  6 лет назад

      Ah yes, the actual thimble used was marine grade stainless, but on the website I did also recommend using nylon thimbles: igkt-solent.co.uk/tying-metal-thimble-rope-fishing-magnet/ Are you by any chance a magnet fisher?

    • @mikewilson8265
      @mikewilson8265 6 лет назад

      I have tried it a little but you need 100+ kg magnets and waterways that have a bit of history. Most Australian rivers are just dumping grounds, not sights of historic conflict. The knot however is a favourite amongst tree climbers as a terminal knot for fastening to their climbing rope. I still climb occasionally as I approach 60.

    • @KnottingKnots
      @KnottingKnots  6 лет назад

      I find it slightly odd that the house I live in was built 35 years before Cookie Boy even discovered Australia. I wonder if the history books even teach that now? I lived in Penrith in the early seventies, and I think the oldest piece of history was good old Ned Kelly's armour. Yep, I too am approaching 60, my days of leaping around like a young Gazelle are now past me.

    Is this knot safe enough and strong enough to use for a long tree swing for my kids? 25 ft high.

    • @KnottingKnots
      @KnottingKnots  4 года назад +1

      I think the issue with this knot would be, that it tightens around the object with a vice like grip! This would mean that the tree could not expand and grow properly in that area. As for the strength of a knot, you may be interested in this post: igkt-solent.co.uk/knot-strength-chart/

      Johnny Debt thanks for the response. But I’ll be using an eyebolt through the limb connecting the rope with a eye > thimble. So, I’m curious is this a good knot to use for that setup?

      @@Joe_Cannon are you wanting a loop or slip knot and should it be quick release?

    • @Joe_Cannon
      @Joe_Cannon 4 года назад

      Johnny Debt I’m not sure here. Maybe a non slip loop knot. Hopefully something that won’t undo itself as it’ll be very high up in the tree. I really wanted an eye + spliced end originally seen on the tree swing video tutorial but can’t do it myself. Will this hold well and not become undone for the swing? Or should I look into something else? I surely don’t know my knots.

      @@Joe_Cannon If you have a three strand rope, then splicing an eye is not too difficult. Take a look at this video: ruclips.net/video/9Ceg1-KAPpo/видео.html Or you could tie a Bowline or the more secure Water Bowling: ruclips.net/video/ji2NbzC7kYA/видео.html

  • @tyburczj
    @tyburczj 6 лет назад +1

    This is probably acceptable for light to medium loads, but if you put something heavy onto this for a long time (e.g. mooring), the tightening nature of the noose will pull the edges of the thimble against the wraps of the noose, chafing and eventually cutting it. For more heavy-duty applications, you're better off with an eye-splice around the thimble (which obviously takes a lot longer and requires either a 3-strand or hollow core rope).
