Great video man! Very refreshing, and absolutely on-point. Whenever I hear someone claim 4K is a dying format, I just SMH, because I believe the opposite is true. I just watched another RUclipsr cherry-pick the last week's MediaPlayNews 4K market share data (just over 7%), and use it to paint a grim picture -- while completely ignoring the second half of last year and all the other metrics indicating 4K is actually a growing format (and that physical media is still very much alive and well). 4K sales always take a dip at the beginning of the year... presumably because 4K is a little more expensive, and many people are often tapped out after the holidays. But I have no doubt we're going to see those weekly numbers go back up once, say, the James Cameron films are released next month, for example. Whenever we see big titles coming out on 4K that a lot of people want, we see 4K sales going up.
I think where people get hung up sometimes is they think in terms of mainstream appeal, rather than niche. So they see all these indicators showing physical media is changing and no longer as mainstream as it once was, and they think that means the same thing as dying or "in decline." Kind of drives me nuts, honestly Lol! Niche markets can thrive... and in fact, are thriving right now with physical media. We've had an explosion of hundreds of boutique labels in recent years, and the 4K format just had its best year ever, in terms of growth (number of releases) and sales. Anyway, I enjoy your content... keep up the great work man.

Thank you for the kind words! I can always compare it to vinyl. More bands make vinyl special editions of their albums these days than ever before, 4K can be the same thing or similar to that, or even all kinds of physical media in general. But the clickbait artists love to paint that dying picture, so we've gotta push back so people know what's really going on!

Would be great for the disc market if they sell players standard region free and that you can put your extern subtitles in via a stick so you can watch movies and series that are not produced with your language on the discs. Their are some players, but expensive.

I’m a big 4K and Blu-Ray collector (over 2K movies and TV shows). I have a dedicated theater room with a high end 4K JVC projector and 11.6.2 Atmos system. For me I only buy new movies on 4K and select catalog titles. Blu-Ray looks very good upscaled even on my 130” screen from 10’ away. You can also upmix audio for full overhead/height speakers. It’s just hard for me to spend $20-30 on a catalog UHD I already own in Blu-Ray. I’m very selective. The difference between Blu-Ray and 4K UHD IMHO, is not as big as the jump from DVD and Blu-Ray (most of the time). If UHD catalog titles were $5-10 I’d buy more for sure. Or if studios offered a trade-in program.

4K isn’t going anywhere. Profit is profit, and where there is someone willing to pay money for something there will always be a seller.
Vinyl is still going, resurgence or not, there will always be a select niche willing to pay for their hobbies.

I know this is a when you think about it kind of thing but when you think about it both streaming and 4k blu rays have financial advantages over each other just in there own ways like the reason why a lot of people say streaming is cheaper is because you get an abundance of entertainment for the same price as each individual disc but at the same time the reason why 4k discs are cheaper is a ounce you have it’s yours kind of thing, and the part that you don’t have to pay monthly to watch it and to pay for high speed internet.

7:31 Discs sales will only go down in the next years,i don't see a future for the 4K disc format, that doesn't mean its dead, but it will be fased out in a few years from now ,i think dvd wil be the last man standing because of how many there are sold already. Also the younger people don't care about discs, they are not going to switch to movies on physical media in the future.Just my view of things.btw i like physical media ,i collect movies and tv shows on blu-ray and dvd.I buy mostly used at this point, otherwise a blow true my budget in a short time, that almost excludes 4K discs for me.Love your videos🇧🇪

I'm pretty much satisfied with HD blu-ray. When we went from SD to HD, the difference was pretty dramatic, but when I go into a store and see all the 4K TV's (really UHD; 4K is a cinema format), sure it looks nice, but not THAT much nicer than HD, to my eyes. It took a lot of time and money to build my HD blu-ray collection (after spending on the same content in VHS and DVD), so I'm stopping there. I'm satisfied.

I myself have been collecting movies for years now. Started on dvds then blu rays and now own alot of 4ks. And tbh there is alot of diffrence in the 4ks but depends on the player and tv supose. I learned this from owning few 4k players over the years but there was a defo boost in picture quality when got my panasonic 820 and 9000. And they upscale blu rays brilliantly also. So much so i got my 820 chipped to play any region blu rays mainly usa ones. Best money i ever spent.

Personally, I love the looks of 4k. However, I have a Sony X700. Out of around 80 4k titles, I have had issues with about a dozen. I can't justify spending $400+ for a better player. Because of this, I now will only get 4ks if it includes a blu-ray.

Yes, too expensive and for many people (average consumer) probably little difference in quality between bluray / 4K. I like the 4K for the additional bonus material so it is something I will get for my 'super' favourite films. Also, if you have the blu ray, it requires an additional purchase. Also requires the purchase of a 4K player (I went for a basic one and it was not that cheap). As you say, probably going to be a niche. Must be a risk for companies to bring out a 4K, a blu-ray / DVD is probably going to be a more valid option. I really hope the format does continue though

Yeah people don’t flinch at spending $700+ on a smart phone but same people think $200+ for a 4K player is outrageous. These people don’t realize VCRs were $400 in early to mid-80s and that’s in 1980s dollars. A $200-400 player in today’s dollars is a bargain.

  • @bandofthehawkguts5941

Also another point, most collectors of movies have already bought their favorite movies on dvd or blu ray. So to upgrade all your movies in your collection to 4k would cost a fortune. Not worth it in my opinion. If its a movie I don't already own on blu ray and i love the movie, then sure i'll wait for a sale on the 4k

  • @bandofthehawkguts5941

I'm a blu ray collector, I've bought about 10 4k movies and i really can't spot a major difference between the two. So why would i spend way more money for the movie for a very minor upgrade. In my opinion the upgrade from dvd to blu ray was night and day.

  • @TofuInc
    @TofuInc 4 месяца назад

I can't justify the price on some of the new 4k releases. Especially the older movies when I can pick up a used blu ray for $3 or $4. Sub $20 for a 4k UHD + Blu ray I'll buy it. The other problem I have with 4k is you just don't know what you're going to get on older movies. Is it going to be a direct transfer of the blu ray? Is it going to be so touched up so much it doesn't even reflect the original video? To be honest I'm even fine with some of the older videos on DVD because that is how I remember them. Blu ray is just always a "safe" option when picking something up.

What retailer actually still sells new DVD's I still see Blu-Ray and yes 4K. With Best Buy and Target (for the most part) pulling out of all physical media sales in the movie category collecting has become more challenging but not dead. Streaming is not the answer for several reasons main being you don't own the movie, so collectors relax physical media is not going to disappear. I collect 4K and Blu-ray and I find that 4K excels with the older films like the Maltese Falcon you showed but for the most part the differences are negligible for most newer movies or in the case of Marvel extravaganzas 4K can accentuate the flaws in the CGI which makes Blu-Ray just fine.
