I’m really loving these “minimal/improvised kit” videos. It shows what you can accomplish if you have the knowledge and skills to adapt to the situation. You are always a highlight of our Sunday. Thanks!
Right on! Modify, adapt, overcome. Wish I had a fraction of the hands on experience Cpl has that enables him to use junk that would likely kill most of us.
Dude this vid is strait up as common man as it gets! The ability to just visualize the value in the basic items would be a challenge to a lot of people these days with how dependent on the latest and greatest technology society has become. The inspiration this video created was priceless! Especially for people who still have a spirit of independence and self sufficiency. Great stuff Corporal Kelly! Keep it up!
This is how I started camping, goodwill, free stuff on Craigslist, and stuff people threw out at the curb. Did what I had to in order to get into the woods for very little money. Love seeing how easy it is to find items that will work just fine for overnights in the woods without spending hundreds or thousands of dollars. Some people get caught up in the gear and forget why they even went out, to enjoy their time outside.
OUTSTANDING !!! This is reality. This is our future. In my career I have dealt with hundreds of homeless camps. That reality could quite easily be our reality all too soon. Thrift shop accruements is SURVIVAL. By far the best vid I’ve seen, and I’ve seen thousands! Well done !
I had never seen a fire started with the small flashlight lense mirror before - a cool skill. Spark onto charred material another one I've never seen before. It's great to learn a new survival skill.
I couldn't agree more. I have seen people use parabolic mirrors in this way, but never in the field like this. What impressed me most is how fast corporal Kelly got an ember. For someone like me who has drilled through so many hearth boards with the bow drill and still not managed an ember, except perhaps once, this certainly looks like the way to go unless the sky is completely cloud covered. In truth the only friction method I have had much success with even in the garden has been the fire roll. I am very glad of BIC for razors as well as lighters.
Love your videos! No dumb music, just the sounds of nature. I also like how you show people how they can survive using inexpensive everyday items. Anybody can spend big money on a bunch of expensive gear but I'll bet there's more low income people watching than anything else! Thank you for your Service and keep the outstanding videos coming!
Corporal this time I wanted to say an extra big thank you for all of the entertainment and education you've provided here on RUclips. It's too bad more people don't see what I see. Your $25 budget just goes to show how easy it would be for anybody to get out and spend a night in the woods. So here's my thanks and I hope you can use it to raise the steaks (and bacon) on a future video. As always I enjoyed this immensely and can't thank you enough.
I have been very I’ll this last couple of years and almost died 3 times. I love the outdoors and especially being able to survive and thrive! I have learned so much from your videos, new ideas I never thought of for creating camps and shelters, knot tying (I appreciate the way you always take the time to slow down when tying your knots so we can learn), knife skills and your insights to equipment etc. Being unable to get outside has been very depressing, but whenever I see you out there It gives me encouragement to keep pushing through and, keep moving forward so I can get back out there! If you were to post an hour long video, I would watch it from start to finish. Your videos give me ideas for my camping trips. Also, I love and appreciate how consistently you have posted videos since you started. Stay awesome and stay safe!
People might complain about this one. I'm never going to do this. But that isn't the point. The point is I learned a lot. Didn't know about the blanket sun bathe thing, didn't know or needed to be reminded how to make the char, never thought about the flashlight inferno deal and never thought about the rib-eye bombs. All good things to learn. Tools for the toolbox as Coalcracker says. Loved it. Keep it up.
Wow. So many take-aways from this video. 1. Fallen leaves in a garbage bag as a bed. 2. How to cut wood with a non-serrated blade. 3. Knots. 4. Creating charcoal, which is great to know; could also come in handy to create an improvised water filtration system. Love this! This would be such an interesting challenge to do, because it's so easy to spend way too much money on gear.

Excellent video Shawn , that's what I'm talking about , back to basics. No fancy fort made from timbers in the woods. Just darn good old common sense fun. There should be an icon for 2 thumbs up if you really dig the video.
OUTSTANDING, Corporal! Really enjoying all the different, minimal, “junk” kits! Showing how it can be done on a budget/survival! Thank you, for continuing to make great tutorials! Semper Fi, Marine
I like this idea much better than the $250 Walmart haul. During that, when you were suggested gradually swapping out cheap equipment for better stuff, I thought why not get better stuff from the start by purchasing used? Poor people do not consider $250 “budget.” And poor people are better off learning that QUALITY LASTS. Anyway, these are all great fun and I love following along.
Tips and tricks galore, in this "Thrift store finds" instalment of the brilliant Corporals Corner.... Outstanding AF . Thank you ATVB Scott Somerset UK
I totally agree. Brilliant sir! I also like the successful challenge of procuring your items from thrift store. I use sunlight all the time to sanitize inanimate objects. I really enjoy your videos. I couldn't do what you do"but" if I should ever find myself needing to survive without the soft lifestyle I'm use to, you've given me something that could save my life. Thank you for your service and for what you're doing now.
I love that you still do a detailed, simple instruction of your tarp Ridgeline every once in a while. I have 2 full Ridgelines set up in the garage because of your videos. One for me, one for my girls. Keep up the good work.
Yes thank you shawn for another overnighter vid I was out with the kids yesterday improvised cooking on hot rocks and a shelter kids loved it.Inspired on the work you do so thank you.
Thanks to this channel I have been inspired to get back out in the woods. I am heading out AGAIN this afternoon, and am planning an overnighter in the near future.
It's not that I get bored watching your 30 minute videos, I have a 21 month old daughter that is constantly making me step away cause she is getting into things! And after she goes to sleep, I'm barely awake the next 30 mins to watch a video. I love the content you put out I just don't have 30 mins most of the time to actually pay good attention to the video. Love you Cpl Kelly!!
Cpl. Kelly, Another Outstanding Video and information AF, you don't need name brand stuff to go out and enjoy the outdoors. Great looking meal too, two of my favorite steak and bacon what more could you ask for. You Are The Master Woodsman and Bushcrafter thanks again for passing on the knowledge and craft. Tim L.
Parabolic lens, decomp wood, sanitizing or sterilization, learned a new fav knot, awesome!!! Love the improvement for leaf bed to hopefully get some sleep. Great video man. The temping of the wood great idea!!!
I’m now heading to the Goodwill Store to find some cheap crap for camping! I never thought a thrift store could set you up for an emergency night in the woods! Plus, you never know when you’ll find something great!
Using the flashlight reflector is a good method, not used much now. Back when I smoked, I lit my cigarette and then used it to light my fire. Lit a dead cattail for my fire the next day.
Great video! Videos like this and your last one that show what can be done with minimal gear are outstanding! Once again, the "K.I.S.S" principle saves the day. While I have a kit of favorite gear that I've assembled through the years that probably costs hundreds of dollars, I can also appreciate what can be done in a pinch with found items or in this case, thrift store items on the cheap. Cover, containers, candling, combustion, cutting instrument, and a means of staving off the effects of conduction were all easily achieved with $25 and most importantly knowledge, skills, and abilities sprinkled with some imagination. Well done!
Awesome fire with the flashlight!!! Whole video made for me in 5 seconds! Love you man! You’re so bad ass! You inspire me to take my son out and show him things you’ve taught me!
Excellent Shawn! What I really like about these types of videos are: 1) It is a challenge to find what you need on a limited budget, and 2) Those who are new to this, and/or who can't afford to spend a lot... Can learn from these videos, but of course training is a big factor!
This is probably my favorite video of yours - simple, to the point, educational, with a focus on materials within practically anyone's reach. And I'm not sure if it was the angle or lighting, but the scenes of you tying the knots for the tarp line were also your best in terms of a how-to instructional - perfect. Making do with what you can easily get your hands on is what bushcraft is all about, and in this video you prove that even with meager means, some creativity, and some well-tuned skills, a person can thrive outdoors. Steak, a night in the forest, campfire, and coffee in the morning? Man that is L-I-V-I-N! And you showed us how to do with $25 worth of obtainium anyone could find in any town in the US. Seriously - way to go and thank you!
One word of caution about using used cook wear: Be sure to check for unusual residue on the inside. People use cook wear for heating things, which they were not intended for. I have seen people use old cook wear for melting lead wheel weights, for making fish weights. I don't know if that heavy metal residue would be removed by boiling. It is, admittedly, unlikely you will happen upon a cook pot with heavy metal residue, but still worth considering.
I enjoy perusing the thrift stores. You never know what you'll find. Great tip using the flashlight and if you have to wander around in the dark it is so much better than a burning stick.
Im just starting out hiking/camping/backpacking. And i had the misconception you needed to buy at least purpose built, or name brand gear to have a decent time. Finding your videos has shown me otherwise. Awesome builds with re purposed items, while having a good time outside, I like it . Keep up the great work Cpl.
i had always heard of starting a fire with the reflector from a flashlight, but had never seen it successfully done until now. mind blown... just one more reason i'm glad i found your channel. thanks for all the great content!
I'm about a week late posting this, been dealing with a cold, but I just wanted to say It was a pleasure meeting you and Dave Canterberry at SMKW in Pidgeon Forge . I'm always a little hesitant about meeting people that I follow on youtube because sometimes when you meet people in real life, they can be very rude and not at all what you thought and it ruins the experience and turns one away from following, but I just wanted to say Shawn and Dave were top notch, very down to earth guys and you could tell they had a true interest in talking to everyone there. Thanks guys
Very informative video, really appreciate the way you show the knotting processes you use. The alternative fire starters were helpful as well. I watched beginning to end.
Not too far from the crap gear we used on trips when I was a kid. We spent all our money on boots, socks, down coat, and sleeping bag. I remember taking a small pot, utensils, and other stuff from my Mom's kitchen! I used an old, worn out before I got it Case knife for everything. Those were the days!
“The crappiest tarp in the world” with “rust proof aluminum grommets” 🤣🤣 that parabolic lens trick is the masters touch, love it. Next time you can rip the copper wire out of the electric blanket and make a radio antenna to put in your online food delivery using Morse code.
Camping....usually consists of spending a small fortune to live like you're homeless but with this "kit", some hobo ingenuity and basic bushcraft skills, the good Corporal makes it work! Well done, Marine!
I think half my outdoor gear came from a very clean church thrift store. Coleman sleeping bags $8, billy cups $1, low backpack cot $7, dome tent $10, propane stove with a dozen canisters $15, dining shelter 8x8 (no poles) $5, etc... Most campers should hit such a store first. Many people buy a bunch of gear, try it twice and give up. Most of what i find looks nearly new at 1/10 the price
Loved the video. I tracked with you on everything until using the parabolic from the flashlight to create some char material. Would never have thought of that. Great idea, always a valuable takeaway from your videos. Keep'em coming!
That was crazy and amazing, I was expecting the lenses being used to create the ember not the parabolic with some punk wood; unbelievably resourceful/creative thinking. Definitely one for the toolbox!
I work in a charity thrift store for the blind. I have shopped this place for decades and now enjoy seeing all that comes in. I get great camping stuff on occasion when it comes in. At this point I dont even mess with camping gear anymore as I have all I could want. If you are not hitting it regular you are missing out on quality gear. Sure sometimes its just boy scout or old too heavy military surplus but other times I find Northface, Cambridge, REI, Kelty and other types of name brand stuff. Some of my best gear I paid less than $10 for. This proves that in a single trip can net you good things. Multiple trips over time get you good peices of gear. I also picked up some great old carbon steel knives over the last couple of years. Great kit all of it.
Always appreciate that you actually take the time to show us how to tie the knots and demonstrate slowly enough that we can follow along - most every other outdoorsman or survivalist just says some riddle about rabbit holes and trees and it's over in like 3 seconds leaving you non the wiser 😅 cheers Corp for actually giving us a chance to learn something!
Your videos are great. 10 minutes or an hour I watch the whole video. Some people just like to complain. If they don't like it just let them move on. Keep doing what you're doing. It's great
A good source of food to take along for camping or back packing is dried beans and a little pack of cured ham. Nutritious, satisfying and will normally last for a good while.
I enjoyed in this video where you went back and explain the skills that you use such as using the parabolic lens, and then explained the char material that you had collected
Looks like the kit I had made as a kid from plunderer items the parents wouldn't miss but sadly it was a Jansport backpack and idk what chef's knife 🔪 I had tarp off the wood pile and I had this awesome magnifying glass outa an old Camera it was thick it came out a one that you look down into but face forward. When that Camera 📸 Broke I took the lenses out wrapped them in cloth and put them in my survival/ spy kit hahaha
Speaking as a person who has had survival training and put those skills to use on at least four continents, my fave part is his field expedient rakes!! 😂🤣
From what I understand rayon is kinda a synthetic cotton fiber if that makes sense. Like cotton that was made instead of grown. I think it tends to be a little more dense. It can be found inside zippos. Great video idea, man. Genuinely inspirational IMO

Great idea 💡.....from riches to refuse to riches .....the Prepper cycle goes on !
Using that light bulb reflecter from that flashlight to start a fire was genius!AF😊
Agreed! badass!!! I always take a magnifying glass with me... The flashlight thing was a new one for me.
Definitely the best bcraft channel more innovative than most
Excellent Shawn!
What I really like about these types of videos are:
1) It is a challenge to find what you need on a limited budget, and
2) Those who are new to this, and/or who can't afford to spend a lot...
I think watching these videos of you temporarily escaping, truly help the rest of us when we can't 👏🤠
Thanks for showing those knots slowly--I appreciate that!
The best thing I've found in your channel is the way you tie knots..that something most important for me to learn About it..
Salute from Malaysia
I enjoy perusing the thrift stores. You never know what you'll find. Great tip using the flashlight and if you have to wander around in the dark it is so much better than a burning stick.
Ooh Rah! Improvise, Adapt, Overcome! You have certainly lived it!💖
Im just starting out hiking/camping/backpacking. And i had the misconception you needed to buy at least purpose built, or name brand gear to have a decent time. Finding your videos has shown me otherwise. Awesome builds with re purposed items, while having a good time outside, I like it . Keep up the great work Cpl.
Can we take a moment to appreciate that this guy sets up camp from scratch in a single day AND captures it in video all at the same time??
i had always heard of starting a fire with the reflector from a flashlight, but had never seen it successfully done until now. mind blown... just one more reason i'm glad i found your channel. thanks for all the great content!
These products make you appreciate the real quality gear!
Glad you skipped the lighter. The flashlight ember was cool
Heck that crappy tarp was heads and shoulders above a tube tent. It was capable of numerous uses.
Damn Corporal! I am a 3rd generation eagle scout and I've never seen the flashlight Firestarter. Amazing AF! Glad I learned something. 💪
Yeah, if you upscale the parabolic mirror, you will have yourself a solar oven!
@@lorkainenkingg8497 yes, I've made those before. 👍
Really enjoying these budget overnighters. It’s amazing what you can do with so little!
We're in that beautiful time of year for camping, love the fall crickets chirping each evening. Outstanding as always Corp!
Starting the fire with the flashlight reflector was awesome! Coolest bushcraft thing I've seen in a while. Outstanding!
Speaking as a person who has had survival training and put those skills to use on at least four continents, my fave part is his field expedient rakes!! 😂🤣
Who needs a bulldozer to push over trees? All you need is a Corporal Kelly. Popeye had Spinach Corporal Kelly has bacon.
Double bagging it. That’s what she said.
Finally someone who shows how to do the knots to were I can actually see the full steps , thank you 😊 🙏
From what I understand rayon is kinda a synthetic cotton fiber if that makes sense. Like cotton that was made instead of grown. I think it tends to be a little more dense. It can be found inside zippos. Great video idea, man. Genuinely inspirational IMO
Love the price limit too
