A head to head comparison of two popular closeup filters, but not as closeup filters! In this video I put both lenses to a tube lens challenge. The Raynox has long been a favorite of macro photographers, who use it with their favorite microscope objectives and recognize it as one of the best affordable tube lenses on the market. The NiSi is a newcomer to this role. In a recent review video I was impressed with the performance of the NiSi as a closeup lens and have been dying to try it out as a 200mm relay lens. This video is all about how the testing was done, and what I found.
If you want to get your hands on either of these lenses, or their big brothers, you can find them right here (please note that these are affiliate links and that I may make a small commission from qualified sales using these links).

Hi Allan, I came across your videos late December 2020. They are so inspirational, informative and detailed. I have not seen anyone doing such fantastic work on youtube. You are naturally an educator and a muse. The world certainly needs to have more people like you. I just wanted to express my sincere appreciation for getting me started to explore this fascinating world of photography. I look forward to seeing more of your fantastic works.
Love your videos and your channel. I have learned more from you in the month or so since discovering your channel than in the 5 or so years I have been playing around with macro. Many, many thanks.
Excellent!! Thanks Allan!
Thanks Allen informative as always 👍
Thanks for the test Allan ! And god, you killed me with your final words : " the apo chromatic " claim might be exaggerated X-D
Nice Video Allan, I have Raynox 150 and 250 that I use on my Tokina 100mm macro. But recently saw this Nisi and thought i can use the 77mm Nisi on my Sigma 180 macro but not considering this combo now after your review :)
Actually, the 77mm NiSi will be an excellent choice to use with the Sigma 180mm, as a closeup lens magnifier. It is less capable as a relay lens, at least compared to the Raynox.
Can any explain to me what step rings I would need to reverese the DCR-150 that is connected to my Nikon Plan 10X and bellows? Thanks much in advance.
Hi Allan. I recently came across your videos! i like them, much information, thank you! i use the raynox with the nikon 10X too, but is there a reason to use 50 mm extension between the nikon obj. and the Rainox? Greetings from Belgium!
It is not mandatory that the infinity space be set to 50mm, but over the years I have the image quality to highest at that length. At shorter distances I was seeing occasion loss of contrast from internal reflections - that all goes away at 50mm. I can't go much further than 50mm before corner darkness creeps in. 50mm seems to be the goldilocks infinity space for me!
Thanks Allan, it’s a fantastic video.
Has you try putting sometime the infinite objetive in a reversed position?
I often reverse the tube lens, but I am not sure how it would be possible to obtain an image with the objective reversed. I will experiment!
Can you have the raynox focusing somewhere in between 208mm and 144mm ? let say 170mm
Great comparison there. Very helpfull. Thnx Allan. Just purchaced a raynox 250, hope its the same quality as the 150!
It is. A lovely lens!
Can't wait for you to get the irix 150mm. Would love to see the results of that lens and the nisi filter together.
I'm looking forward to that one as well!
@@AllanWallsPhotography the laowa 100mm 2:1 is a treat to use in the field as well
@@matthewmarsie9457 So I hear - I have only used it very briefly, but definitely need to give it a proper road test soon!
Allan, when you position the Raynox at 144mm where are you measuring from? Is it 144mm from sensor to back of glass, front of glass, or middle of the tube lens? Or are you measuring from the lens mount vs sensor. Same for the objective lens, where are you measuring from when setting the 50mm infinity space. I appreciate the help and if this has been answered before I'm sorry for the repetition.
This is a question I am asked 3-4 times a day, so don't worry about it! The distance of the relay lens is from the sensor to the lens element that is nearest to the camera. An exact infinity space is not necessary, but I measure from the front element of the relay lens to the flange of the objective (where the threads hit the barrel. Hope that helps!
I am 71 and new to photography. I just bought the Panasonic Lumix FZ300(/330) and am looking at "things" to make it more versatile. People writing about the Raynox 150 eventually got me here. You talk about using it in reverse... how do you use it in reverse? (I have not bought the Raynox yet)
Please can anyone advise what the reduction in magnification from 10X will be if the Raynox is focused at 144mm (as tested by Allan in this video) instead of 200mm? I have no idea how to calculate that. In fact, I cannot find any explanation of how the optics would be able to achieve such a modification, which might answer my question from "first principles".
Hi, did you find the answer?
Need help putting together a setup using a Nikon Epi10 0.25 infinity lens.
Hi Pete, it is a 200mm focal length objective, infinity corrected, but if we are talking about the same lens, it is designed for non-contact interferometry. I've never used one ($2,000 and a 7mm working distance being the main reasons), but it sounds like a cool project - shoot me an email and I'll be happy to help you work through setup and lighting issues that are going to make it difficult.
wonderful test. can you give a link to your microscopic nikon infinity lens please ?
Hi... I use Microscope Central for new objectives. You can find this Nikon objective here.. microscopecentral.com/products/nikon-10x-plan-achromat-microscope-objective
How do you measure the 144mm? I know it is from the plane of the sensor, but where on the DCR-150 do you choose to set as the exact point to measure from?
From the sensor plane marker on the right side of the camera to the rear element of the closeup lens, which is where the base of the flange (the end of the threads) meets the lens barrel.
You forgot the link!

i put a close up lens on my M50 eyepiece, i thought i had an R5.....................:P
