- Hard fouls, Marina Mabrey and the blunder that cost the Sky the game. Here is your recap for the Connecticut Sun vs the Chicago Sky.
What is up awesome people of the internet. Last night the Connecticut Sun narrowly defeated the Chicago Sky 82 to 80. Now when I say narrowly this really was a extremely close game, and the reason why was because the Sun allowed the Sky to hang on in the first half. Now going into this game I had the Sun winning by a decent amount but the Chicago Sky was having none of that as they had a really nice start to the game led by Chennedy Carter and Kamilla Cardoso in the first quarter. Now guys over the last games we have seen Kamilla play better and better gaining the confidence to not only catch and score at the basket but feel comfortable going for long jumpers as well. Every since we returned from the Olympic break Kamilla has been getting touches early in games and it sure is paying off, in the 4 games so far she has been scoring in double figures with yesterday being her best game dropping 18 points and 6 rebounds for the Sky

Cardoso and Allen need possession of the ball all the time. They are buckets.
Carter, who I love, needs a long time out. I don't care how talented any player is, what she's doing is wrong. This isn't the first time she's been violent in games. I would love to see a long career from her, but no one is entitled to playing in the pro leagues.

I think y’all are in your feelings about how physical she is by committing the hard foul. When Suns did that to Angel and dumped her on her neck. They didn’t suspend them for several games. They just made her leave for the rest of the game. *Now I agree with giving Chennedy a Technical Foul 1 for that foul.
Glad Marina Mabrey moved on and went to a team she gel with, she’s playing better but was very inconsistent with the Sky! I’m glad she’s where she want to be so she can thrive. I feel like there was a lot that went on when she was with the Sky, so to say the least, I’m glad she’s gone!

What Carter was doing wasn't defense, it was a mugging. Carter wasn't even looking at the ball. She needs to suspended for a few games so maybe she'll learn a lesson. The sad part of this is Carter doesn't have to do these type of things because she is the best player on Chicago. With her skills and talent, she just doesn't need to behave like this.
She's already been tossed off two other teams. She doesn't learn her lesson, which is sad, tragic. I want her to change for the better and do better in life.

Mabrey was purposely loosing games at Chicago. She was Clearly Jealous of Angel and Kysre and was probably the reason they traded Kysre. Chicago should've kept Kysre and Traded Mabrey months ago. Or they should've benched or cut Mabrey months before she asked to be traded. Everyone could see that she was trying to loose games and didn't want to be there. After she did her damage in sabotaging the Sky she asked to be Traded. It wasn't smart for the Sky to keep her as long as they did. This is a perfect example of why you don't keep people around you who you know mean you any good. She had a good game against The Sky, the team she was tanking on. So What...

This isn’t being addressed enough. Seeing how she’s playing with the Sun goes far beyond running the right plays and having other talent for Mabry to play off of. You don’t get traded & all of a sudden start playing the way she is with the Sun.
To add, MM’s comments in this post game presser says a LOT about how she’s really been feeling about the Sky team & coaching.
I thought the same thing too! 😳 this is why I think Carter fouled her the way she did. She screwed them over by missing 3s, always turning over the ball and missing free throws on purpose.
With the Sky she would consistently throw the ball away many times during the game. She didn't look like she was even trying. Good riddance!

I'm not sure what Mabry is getting revenge for ... she wanted to be traded and was traded. Too bad she didn't play like this with the Sky. That was a great trade for the Sky, she was too expensive and they want to focus on younger players to develop.

Reese needs to make easy shots or pass, Allen needs to stop dribbling so much and taking time off the clock when they don't have a comfortable lead unless they are setting up a play. Carter needs to work on her mental bc her game unmatched. She should help fire up the team, but she is triggering. The team needs better defense in the first half AND they need to run the floor in the first half. That worked for them in the earlier part. They need endurance and strength training.
I need to add...they will build towards becoming stronger. They are playing against cohesive teams.
There are 2 bigs in Chicago that can make shots: Kamilla and Izzy, Angel is not one of them. She is a great rebounder tho, she should take less shots and focus on her rebounding.

Appreciate you mentioning how Angel’s efforts in the third quarter helped spark that Sky run. Yes, Angel’s first half wasn’t good, which many of her detractors will focus on unfortunately… However, her ability to regroup and the Sky in the second half was excellent. She’s continuing to grow and will be a force in the near future.
Angel also never took the shot that would have won the game (if she made it).
She’s a great leader no doubt . But she needs a lot of help on offense . I mean… she can’t even execute a grade school lay up . 😅

For a coach to allow the behavior she's getting from Reese and Carter is bush, unprofessional, and leads to players wanting out. And what free agent is going to want to sign with Chicago? Who wants to join that dysfunctional mess? A capable coach is needed to instill the discipline that's sadly lacking.

When basketball becomes an excuse to assault opponents, it's not basketball anymore, as you pointed out, alexandra. Play like this should result in ejection, and if a player accumulates enough ejections in a season, that player should be suspended. Players should confine their behavior to basketball only at all times. This kind of play destroys the game and makes the game unwatchable.

Carter is a dirty player, she has a history as a dirty player, also a history of being a problem with her teamates. Cardoso, needs to get away from Spoon, Reese and Carter. She is wasted on the Skye.
Angel is a great rebounder and thats it. She is a role player, she cant score like Kamilla or Izzy, she is not a good finisher at all. She has to play a different role if the Sky wants to win, wether people like it or not...

@@twilarussell183I have been watching basketball for decades. I know a franchise player when I see one. Angel is not one. Is she an all star? Yes. Because she does one thing at an elite level. That is rebounding and at times, defense. She is not a good scorer. She has poor touch around the rim, and no mid-range or three point game. She is a female Dennis Rodman. His offensive game like Angel’s, was limited. But he was a great defender and one of the best rebounders ever, which is why he is in the Hall of Fame. Her game can be an integral part of a winning team, but she should not be your primary or secondary scorer.

Reese scores more points ONLY because she is shooting way more attempts than them (most of them are missed shots which is costing the team). That's why her field goal percentage in the past 4 games is 28%, 30%, 50%, annd 25%. She is also given more minutes to play by her coach. Kamilla's contribution on the other hand is more efficient in scoring for the past 4 games. Kamila was shooting 62%, 66%, 85% and 72% field goal but the coach is giving her lesser minutes despite that. Reese is only good at rebounding and free throws. You should be aware of it by now. She is a great role player and should just stick to it instead of chasing double double because it's just doing more harm than good at this point.

She’s already one of the best rebounders-man or woman-in the world at 22. Rodman wasn’t that at 22. Check his history. Players grow, especially young players out of college. Bird and Magic and Isaiah Thomas had their way with Jordan his early years even as he was improving each year, until they didn’t. As Angel’s offensive repertoire develops she will be a force, and it will develop. Being able to do what she does now without a good offensive toolbox gives a hint at what she’ll become. You can bet on that.

Great analysis, as usual Quita. I agree about Chennedy. She is an amazing player, she has an excellent, very hard to defend midrange, is a great rebounder, great, quick drivers and can pass very well. On the other hand, you have to admit, something's up with her. She's got an anger issue, or something. This has been happening for a while with her, with different teams too.
Did you watch that postgame interview with Kamilla, T Spoon and Lindsay? At the beginning, you can hear loud banging, and then later, yelling, and some are saying that was some Sky players fighting or voicing their displeasure at the game. T Spoon comes in after it kind of quiets down, looking frazzled and sad. I am betting that it was either Chennedy or Angel or both in the locker room making the racket? Who knows. I feel bad for T-Spoon. Some positives for Chicago: first of all Lindsay Allen was really great! Actually amazing. And Kamilla finally is showing what she can really do. I am glad that she's showing more confidence in getting position down low, and asking for the ball. (And getting the ball!) She has continued to be able to shoot well from mids and outside. I love her personality, and team spirit. Angel has continued being a warrior in the paint, with rebounding. She showed more midrange, last game, taking defenders out a bit, but seemed to want to battle AT and Breezy this game. I am a Liberty fan but I like players from all the W teams-including the Sky, and Sun. I wanted Mabrey to show if she can do better on the Sun and she sure seemed to do that-in Chicago. Do you think there's some issue with the Sky? Why did Kah, Mabrey (and Candace Parker?) want out? It seemed to happen with Wade's abrupt departure? I don't think it is T Spoon. Could it be management?
Everyone needs to slow down the "thug" shit. Everyone hears what you mean. Carter has some anger issues for sure. She lost me with the jewell lloyd from behind the back tackle. But if we cant be healthy enough to talk about it fairly how is this young woman going to learn? Carter deserves an indefinite suspension if it happens again for her own sake. She is likely to tank her own incredible talent

Great commentary, Quita! You are 100% right about the last two Chicago plays, especially the last one. If they wanted Allen with the ball, why wouldn’t Angel inbound it instead of hand it off with four seconds? I see Angel was setting a screen, but like you said there was no time to do that! You should have been there because they should have tried to throw it to Cardoso, she is the second tallest player in the league, she has a high chance of getting it.

When you have a coach who laughs while refs are discussing upgrading the Chennedy flagrant, no wonder Chennedy gets an okay from these type of fouls. You r right Chennedy can do any thing she wants apparently foul wise. On that play she was no where near the ball, there was no swipe at the ball as you say! As for Reese and her double doubles……she was 3 for 12 from the field, so her double doubles mean nothing to me. Some buddy needs to rescue Cardosa from this thug team. She’s a great player and being wasted in Chicago just to pat Reese’s stats. They want to improve Reese…….teach her a simple layup using the damn backboard!

'swipe at the ball' my ass. What is this? CNN? That was a physical assault. could've blinded her. Carter should have been thrown out of the game and escorted off the floor immediately. There is NO way to justify what she did as 'accidental'. The ball was already WAAAY past her, she was intentionally swiping at the face. WNBA better do something about this before some team decides to retaliate and puts carter in the hospital (easy to do on a court- I used to coach/ref BBALL in the Ivy League..seen it done.) oh, one more thing, Carter (black) appears to have a 'thing' against white WNBA players...and THAT is something where you have to start looking at the Coach, staff, and organization. Is Chicago trying to become the Oakland Raiders of old?
Reese would be a 20-20 player if her shooting was on point. Hopefully she can improve.
I don't think LA lost the game for the Sky. You have to keep things in perspective. You win as a team and lose as a team. There were missed free throws, missed 3 pointers, and layups. There were also bad calls by the refs. No one player on either team can score 80 pts all by themselves. Chalk it up to experience and move on to the next game.

Quita, I know you love to stay positive, but the way the refs do Chicago is wrong, I am still mad at refs for calling a phantom foul against the Sky late in the game! Bonner was not touched, but the refs reviewed the play and still let the foul stand. The WNBA seems not to do performance evaluations on refs, but they should, bad refs never seem to get fired or reprimanded by the league, it must be nice having a job that never holds you accountable. P.S. Mabrey played excellent, too bad she never gave that type of effort once this year while with the Sky, she was in a perpetual shooting slump.
