    You are right my friend... M240i xDrive VS basic 911 carrera 4 is a very good performance match up for half the price of the Porsche. The BMW is a bargain !

  • @extreme8808
    @extreme8808 2 года назад +1

    All valid arguments, but there's one to counter them all - balance and feel. You cannot replicate the inherent balance and the feel of a car with an engine that's sitting on its rear axle. It's just a different beast altogether to drive exuberantly. Having said that, you can't beat the practicality advantage of the BMW. :)

    PS the comparison with 911 is to me relevant up to a certain extend, the two animals might share numbers, but their spirit is v different.

    Carrera was my dream car from my 20years old, but then I drive it a few times, in Prague and around, and I was said.
    Too stiff, boring car in low RPM, no space in interior for mobile phone, for water bottle, for my hockey bag :-/
    yes - when you go to 5000rpm it starts to be beast -but suddenly you drive 180km/h and you are without your driving licence very soon :)
    in Czech Rep there are very high prizes of Porsche, its close to the Ferrari (new Porsche 150.000€)
    so for me this BMW is now the choise because:
    daily car for the city like Prague, good suspension
    great power
    nice color Brooklyn Grey
    and with these improves/must have:
    alcantara wheel
    JB4 for 450Hp
    carbon front splitter and carbon wing for the trunk
    4wheel drive
    Roof window
    and Im happy man :-) for 60.000€
    I will be good enemy for most od Carreras drivers and I can put my hockey bag to the trunk and 2 small people to the back seats :-)

    I agree that its closest competitor is a Carrera 4. As to whether you'd realistically cross-shop the two, I'm not so sure. Fully spec'd it's less than half the price of a spec'd Carrera [2] for a car with identical straight-line performance. I suspect that most people who buy a 911 aren't cross-shopping. But, if you can't afford a 911, aren't a die-hard Porchephile, and are open to more of a GT sports car, this car doesn't really have any rivals for what you get for the money. For me, the choice would probably be this or a 911 991.1 Carrera S PDK. So, a new BMW vs a 10yo Porsche. To my mind, it certainly blows away a base Cayman. As always, YMMV.

    • @MarekDrivesENG
      @MarekDrivesENG  2 года назад +1

      Definitely Carrera S, although I'd probably choose a manual.

    • @nigel.w
      @nigel.w 2 года назад

      @@MarekDrivesENG I'm in the UK, so for the same money as a spec'd M240i xDrive, it would have to be a base 991.1 Carrera 3.4...if wanting a manual with low-ish miles. But maybe the 3.4 is actually ideal with a manual, because with the long gearing, you'd be able to rev it out more without endangering your driving licence than you would a 3.8 S.

    I ordered a 2023 m240i xdrive but I am still debating between this or going for a 2023 GT2 AWD stinger that I test drove. I currently have a 2021 GT1 stinger and am debating between these two cars. Even the stinger has a known annoying trunk rattle and terrible brake pads that cause the brake rotor to warp over time from dust accumulation supposedly. I had to get mine resurfaced at 14k miles which left me wondering if I should change cars. I test drove a 2022 m240i xdrive and really loved it. Dual personality car like the stinger and I do not really need 4 doors so I am debating. We'll see what happens by next year as ordering any car takes literally years to get and I don't see that changing for long time to come.

    • @MarekDrivesENG

    Really enjoyed this review; entertaining and informative! I do have a question, though: It was mentioned that there is a rear suspension issue, and was that in reference to faulty rear shocks? I ordered my M240i six months ago, picked it up a week ago, and one of the first things I noticed was an intermittent clunking noise coming from the passenger rear of the car; is this a known issue?

    • @MarekDrivesENG
      @MarekDrivesENG  2 года назад +2

      Sounds about right. Apparently this car had the issue, when my colleague was reviewing it in February 2022. He said it's probably a faulty shock issue, and he reported it to the press office. When I was reviewing the car in early July I noticed the noise as well, so I asked the press office about it. They said the issue has been addressed since February, and if there is a problem again, they will look into it. I will ask again, because it does seem like a bigger issue.

    • @MarekDrivesENG
      @MarekDrivesENG  2 года назад

      OK, I'll have to go back to the 1M Coupe, which is absolutely wild and terrifying, and I got to drive it on a wet and foggy day on some Greek mountain roads that I didn't know. I was mature enough to know how much power I had on tap, so I almost shit myself.
      After that experience the M2 feels very manageable, even if still a bit rough around the edges. But that's part of the experience. The M240i xDrive (I haven't driven the RWD version) is very refined, and it doesn't feel overpowered. The problem with recent BMWs is that they always seem to have too much power and too much grip to safely have fun in, until it's too late. This one is just the right amount of everything, but as you've seen at 7:07 it's possible to go too far in this one as well :)
      So, more refined and easier to live with, than the F87 M2, but at the same time fun enough, when you it.

    • @richardkillian5657
      @richardkillian5657 3 месяца назад

      Japanese cars are better on reliability but that's all they are better on. In absolutely every other way German cars are so much better. Japanese cars are so boring and they get "hand me down" tech from German cars years afterwards.
      Also, I've been driving BMWs for the last 6 years and the only thing I've had to replace is 1 windscreen wiper - so very reliable in my experience.
      Also, even one of the very best Japanese cars, the Surpa, is actually a BMW really. The supra has the same engine and gear box as my car (I drive this G42 M240i).
