Rumspringa sounds like a really good idea! Instead of forcing a religion on someone their whole life, them them go out and experience life and see if that's what they truly want.

MoonieLass in my religion one of the rules is to not smoke and i think that one isn't pathetic :)

The thing is, if they chose to leave their amish life, their family completely abandon them, and they leave them without anything, no money, nothing.

Considering her diet is probably majorly natural food, no blow dryers and not a lot of harsh product and processes Sarah probably has the healthiest hair of any adult Theodore has worked on before. The look he chose was really great on her too.

Sharleen Hansen There are different sects of Amish. And some have more liberal rules than others. We would not have been allowed to have a picture/video taken when I was growing up, but now my Dad would not care too much, but Mom was pretty much set against any of that right up to her dementia. Now she calls Dad her son or her brother.
So to answer the question if she is "part" Amish, I would say she is a different sect, and allowed more "things" than many, including myself, when I was Amish.

@@courtneylynn1854 Pretty sure derpoverload understood that and was questioning that the stylist even asked that, and derpoverload also made the point that you don't have to use heat (and damage your hair) in order to dry it. :-(

About an hour ago I was making a private sale to an Amish for some old machinery I was not using. He brought along his wife, as he is handicapped in a wheelchair and she pushes him around. To be completely honest, they were fairly rude. Plus I am German, which they did not know, so they spoke their butchered version of German (Amish German) to each other complaining about the prices on the machinery. I did not tell them I speak German (my first language), although I should have.

I see a lot of these comments are about how they "destroy their lives with religion". Personally I think it's admirable that they have such a deep connection to something. Also I think they stay after coming of age because they can't imagine not having that sense of community & togetherness.

Exactly what I thought. I lived around a lot of Mennonite communities when we lived in Maryland. The Amish I knew of wear black, Mennonites wear color and their caps are different as well. I think a lot of people just use the word Amish in general, for both.

Amish are Dutch so I'd say that's what her accent is.
The Amish speak German/Pennsylvania Dutch in addition to English. Most of them have this accent.

Denise Mueller Some of them speak German, but their accent is Pennsylvania Dutch. Not all Amish sound like this, but most of them up north in PA do.

Her friend Laura looks like someone I met on the train once. Her husband pulled out a flip phone, and then she pulled out a smart phone! They told me they grew up in and still live in the Amish community but don't follow all the rules.
