This nest is unusual. The Bald Faced Hornets built what is essentially a double nest--the main part of the eggs and inner structure are down towards the bottom. However the hornets papered up all the way to the peak of the house, a span of over 4 feet making it an enormous nest

I sure hope I never have that happen again. I got revenge after sunset when they had settled down, I used two cans of wasp killer and it worked well.

All i can say is WOW! I have handled bees and even with protective clothes they have a way of finding an opening. Wasps an hornets are a whole different ballgame. Honeybees can only sting once and they die. Hornets and wasps can keep going . So if one finds an opening in the clothes , it will keep working and its buddies will follow that one's scent trail. This is one brave dude.

I work in the UK for a pest control firm and we spray the nest from ground level with extension poles and leave until the next morning when all the wasps/hornets are completely wiped out. A little puff of insecticide powder through the entrance hole to the nest is all that's needed. The wasps/hornets getting agitated and moving in and out of the nest spread the powder around the entire nest is what destroys it. It is often done at a distance where I don't need to wear the protective clothing. I've been doing for 5 years like that and never been stung.

I had one under patio stones, it was a huge tunnel. The backyard was hard to enjoy with all of those little bastards flying around like they owned the place. I had no idea what do. I went and took a look in the basement (furnace room where we keep crap). I checked a bunch of places to see if something would spark an idea. Nothing. So I decided I will deal with it another day.
Shortly after I was getting hungry so I decided on a bowl of frosted flakes. I opened the pantry and I then noticed 2 massive bottles of maple syrup that were left over from a pancake morning event we had at work.
I waited till nightfall to go out with the flashlight. I overturned to patio stones, as I imagined it was very easy to dig through the stone dust used to place the patio stone on. (oh I did dress as if I would be attacked by 1000's of yellow jackets) Face cover, eye goggles, ski jackets tucked my jeans in my boots and it was about 26 Celsius outside. I then started pouring the already opened maple syrup down the holes.
Yellowjackets started to emerge, but unable to go anywhere drowning in maple syrup. I went into the house. and just left it. The next morning there were so many dead yellow jackets. I dug up the hole even more and found a whole lot more yellow jackets ...dead and sticky.

Was it truly your fault? I am assuming you didn't see it because it was underground. It would be the owner's fault if it was public land because they should have destroyed it.

I specialize in this kind of work in Sydney. Here are some sensible points: 1. Use Permethrin Powder, which has a residual value as well. 2.Load it into a pressure container, such as a dry, rechargeable fire extinguisher.3 Pressurise the container to at least 60 PSI, 4. Connect hose of Extinguisher to a length of pipe, such as 8mm copper, ( need a simple fitting connector). This wand can be at least 3 or 4 metres long, so you are out of the field of vision of the insects. You DONT have to be in their proximity, or on a ladder at risk. 5. Do the job during the day, so you can see where to pump the powder in most effectively, and how to step away safely. 6. Do the job and then get out of the road, calmly. 7. DO NOT RUN, OR MAKE RAPID MOVEMENTS, WASPS AND, BEES, SEE RAPID MOVEMENTS MORE EASILY. Don't swat at them with your hands or arms. 8. Keep the top of your head covered, so they cant track you by infra red heat coming from there. 9. treat stings with a paste made of soluble aspirin, and a drop of water. Mix, and pat it onto the skin gently. For bee stings, remove sting so it doesn't break off, and then add a dab of honey. This method is patented. BE SENSIBLE. THIS CAN BE DANGEROUS. rodyates@australianhoney.com.au. +61 2 (0) 414843088 . Watch for my You Tube video soon.

That's mostly what I do. The dust I'm using is a pyrethroid dust and the duster gets it in there with some pressure pretty well. With the suit I'm not as worried about proximity

@none none it's old enough and the tag has worn off that I don't remember the brand.
What's most important is that you get a 3 ply suit. They're expensive--north of $150 US. It's worth every penny though. I've only been stung through the suit itself once (other places? Many more than once)

This can be dangerous yes this is true. I deal with my bee hives all the time and stop all the wasps, hornets and yellow jackets I can find to allow bees to do the great job they will do for us. Honey Bees in most parts are harmless they are herbivores do not confuse them wasps and such. Wasps, yellow jackets and hornets are carnivorous.
To kill all yellow jackets, wasps and hornets you must do this at night so all are back into the hive. If you do not any that are out of the hive during the day will come back to see a dead hive and go make a new hive. Each warp, hornet or yellow jacket can become a queen and is already fertile to start a new colony. If you have Bees and want them removed contact a bee keeper most of the time they will come get them for free. Honey Bees do not make colonies the same way. They need a queen to survive.
Wasps, hornets and yellow jackets can spread very quickly in areas. So plan wisely if you plan to kill them they will attack the light at night if one is used So make your plan in the day time when you see them. Get a bee coat or suite good gloves that you can use. Soft leather is best not clothe for the gloves. Once you have your clothes for protection study the hive to see all entrances and exits. Make sure to have your powder or spray that will kill them in a matter of seconds. Then wait for night time and execute your plan.
Each wasp you see flying in this video that was not in the hive to get dusted will go make a new hive. So by him doing this in the day time instead of 1 four foot hive he now made 100's more. Something to think about!

can confirm. standing really still does the trick. Its amazing watching a hive burst into action and the wasps go hunting, but not see you as you stand in the midst of them.
I wear my motorbike leathers with a veiled hat, no sting is getting through that armor, and I can just hop off the bike, do the job and then head home.
dusk is a good time, you can watch them all come home before applying the Permethrin/diatomaceous powder.
I'm on the west coast of the south island of NZ if anyone needs wasps killed.

I got a story about hornets.
So my dad is a race car driver (he races dirt track cars) he buys cars and takes some parts for his race car and to sell. Once we had one car in his garage that sat outside for a while, and my brother noticed a hornets nest in the car door. So my dad walks over with his welding suit, welding helmet, and gloves and BLOWTORCHES the nest. He killed all of them except for one. He slowly came to my dad and my dad took one look at it, squished it in between his hands and stepped on him. Idk why but seeing him blowtorch them was oddly satisfying.

You set a shop vac with long pipe. As the wasp flys for the nest entrance, zap it is suck up.
Just leave the vacuum running. It will get everyone. A little wasp killer and no more yellow devils.

It's a duster, it sprays a pesticide powder. It was more common in the past for residential use, now a days people use sprays. Commercial pest control still uses things like delta dust in crawl spaces, vents and cracks for silver fish, cockroaches and stuff. Personally, I would have sprayed something like a foaming wasp killer at the nest entrance and stood back for half hour while they died off.

When I was a teenager we encounter a large Bald faced hornet nest....teenager solution: Joust the hive with a stick as you pass with four-wheeler...
I did receive 1 sting prior to our jousting competition....got hit in the calf and it swelled up pretty good, I'm not allergic..these guys pack a punch compared to other stinging insects...
