    I remember when I used to work in landscaping there was a yellow jacket nest in the ground of the one property we were cleaning up. We left a weed wacker running and left it over the hole for awhile to get rid of them. You could say it was like a tornado cutting them in half when they would try to fly in and out of their nest

      established your own, "no flying zone" over their nest, lol. some would also probably call that "respawn camping", however, yellow jackets are no game, so it works.

    I'm glad I found this video. I'm starting to have an issue with yellowjackets building a nest in front of my house. They found a crack in the brick mortar and just started a few weeks back (maybe about 30 coming going going at the moment). I have tried spraying it every night, but with the way the brick is, it must be a labyrinth in there and the poison just isn't reaching far enough in. I set up a trap about 5 feet away, but have only caught a few.
    I was actually thinking of trying this, and your video has given me confirmation that it does work.
    Wish me luck!

    Shop Vacs are great for so many reasons. I had to do this years ago when we replaced our windows. There was a huge yellow jacket nest in the wall under the window in our bedroom. I shoved the hose in the hole turned on the Shop Vac , ran out of the room and closed the door. I let it run for about 30 or 40 minutes and problem solved.

    My kind of justice. I've taken to using this method, although I actually bought a beekeeping jacket and veil because it seems like every summer I'm having to remove a variety of critters. Either it's yellow jackets, paper wasps or bald-faced hornets. Sometimes I'll have to remove multiple hornet nests and other years I won't see any. They're actually pretty easy because they conveniently place their solitary entrance right in the front of the hive where it's easy to access. Paper Wasps and Yellow Jackets are the usual guests around my house for sure. Ever since I bought the jacket, stings have been very minimal. The only time I've ever gotten stung is when I wasn't paying attention and the side of my face was touching the screen on the hood and they'll sting right through it no problem. I don't use this method of tying the shop vac up and walking away. I actually take the shop vac myself right to the entrance, which I can afford to do since I have some protection.
    Other times, I'll use a puffer with Drione dust. That's also an incredibly effective method, and I tend to use that for in-ground nests of yellow jackets. Just make sure to do it at night and scout out for any secondary entrances/exits before hand. The dust really gets them quick and it's pretty safe stuff to use. It's mostly just silica.
    The only thing is, sometimes people get a little hasty and think just because they've killed them and destroyed the nest, the problem is solved. If you're using a method that doesn't leave chemicals, you need to make sure if you're dealing with a void space around the house or in the soffit for example, you need to make sure you close up any gaps or holes that they used to establish their nest. I don't know if the same applies for wasps or not, but with bees...once a nest has been established somewhere once, other bees can recognize that even if the hive/nest is long since removed. They can sense that another colony called that home at one point and are attracted to that. I don't know if wasps or hornets behave the same way but I don't take chances. Gotta make sure you seal up any void spaces around the house. When spring comes around, go around and check the perimeter of the house to make sure there's no void spaces anywhere. If you don't do this, I promise you you'll have critters hanging around come summer. Especially if you live in hotter climates. Sometimes it can't be helped due to the construction of a home but be proactive if possible.

    • @sindento1942
      @sindento1942 2 года назад

      I've read you should always leave the old nest in situ if possible, wasps and hornets will never use an empty nest.All you're doing if you remove one is making room for another.

      @1jtwister 4 года назад +12

      Larvae don't hatch, they pupate (a cocoon-like resting stage) then those hatch into adults.... provided the entry point is sealed , this method will often be enough to eliminate the colony. As for the queen re-establishing the nest unless taken out, she is a slave not a master and makes no decisions nor issues any orders as she is merely an egg laying machine. All Hymenoptera who make queens can do so at will, albeit not instantly. Without access to the outside world for food, starvation will finish the job. Sometimes the approach being taken here results in the wasps ending up inside the home, as they are now trapped in a dark place and any point of light that leads into the home will look like a spotlight to them.

    I would offer two suggestions :
    1) Do this in the evening just before the sun goes down; there will be a very constant stream of wasps returning to their nest.
    2) On my shop vac, there is an outlet that would allow the wasps to escape if they avoided the water. Put a bit of screen door mesh over the outlet.
    Well done.

Mine was 15 ft high tho, luckily I had a 24 ft discharge hose from my sump pump, and for a shop vac used an bissell carpet cleaning machine ( just like a shop vac) tied the hose to a 2x4 14 footer and turned it on,BAMM, STARTED SUCKING UP WASPS! like crazy,it works great,then a knock on the front door,lady wanted me to turn off high pitched noise,I explained to her I'm allergic to wasps so no,she insisted,I said I'll see if I can muffle it,HELL NO, i go check and it's still sucking wasps,knock on door,it's the COPS, explained it to them and offered to show them the setup on back deck they said no,so I kept on ,1/2 hr later knock on door,a different neighbor,none of these neighbors I recognize, so half HR later I just turned it off, I'll bring my real shop vac over tomorrow and fire up again,I'm afraid to open the first one to see the dead (I HOPE) wasps , I'll update tomorrow.

But if you're okay with repeating the process every couple seasons I guess it's on you. Just know that every passing season the nest will get bigger and harder to knock down.

      Best practice is to use this method to thin out the workers and then attack the nest. I havent had to use this method yet, most of my nests have been obliterated with spray or fire. I have a stubborn ground nest this year entrance in an old buried railroad tie. Since they are using the cracks as the entrance there is no real clear entrance. I have tried Diatomaceous earth so far and doesnt seem to be working. Going to try and drown them tomorrow night with some soap. The nest doesnt seem to be too aggressive yet, but it is has become more active and needs to die.

    This really works, with the advantage that poisons are not used and the wasps are removed rather than left dead in the wall or siding. I used a single extension and a long hose and found that a clip or clamp on the siding can hold the tube in place at the entry point. Catches them coming and going but takes several hours to get them all. Then seal the opening with caulking to prevent future infestation.

Fix up the tube so only 1 end is open, dump a bunch of sevin inside it, attach the air tank to the valve stem, and blast it into the nest at 40 psi. then run fast.

    I have done this with a shop vac and a 16 foot wand I made from ABS Pipe (much lighter than PVC). The wasps aggressively attack the end and get sucked in. I haven't tried the water in the bottom idea. That might make it easier. The pipe reaches up and sucks them away all nice and clean. It also sucks away the paper house they make....
    I have not had them chase after me.

      brad tittle What did you do with the contents then if you didn't use the soapy water method? Leave them in there to starve?
      The suction pulls them into the water. The soap coats their wings preventing them from getting out of the water so they quickly drown. Better fate then starving to death.

    Oug. 31st. 2014 I was invaded with yellow jackets for about 2 months now. They entered bottom of my siding near the basement sliding door.
    I pulled the siding a bit and sprayed to no avail. Last night I pulled the siding a little bit just trying not to destroy my siding and with a flash light looked to find out that there is no nest there. The nest is under the ply wood, so no wonder that the spray was not effective. And than I saw your clip on how to use the shop vac. Well let me tel you this IT WORKS. I got hundreds in about 3 hours . The activity has slowed down to a crawl and I am hoping to completely get rid of them. I will try sealing the edge of the ply wood to the center block and hope for the best. mean while thank you very much.

      Glad to help. Almost a year since I posted this video, and I'm going to set up the shop vac again. The yellow jackets have invaded again about 10 feet away from last year's spot. They really like our front porch for some reason. Every year. I never calked over last year's hole or anything and they never returned. There were still a small number, but it was such a small percentage, that I just let them be and winter did the rest.

    best part of this is I'm thinking that since the shopvac also sucks all the air around them, they (mostly) can't release "angry" pheromones so the others don't get alerted to danger in the hive. all around probably the best way to take care of them.
    chemicals would result in a lot of dead wasps which would invite roaches in to eat them.

      Good idea if you want them to chew their way into the house. That said this method is reckless. Stirring them up for three hours to avoid using a dust that is organic and applied into the nest sight where there is no way your kids could be exposed.

    • @capthook26
      @capthook26 8 лет назад

      +bugmanchad Correct but even using an organic dusting will stir them up. As you're applying the dust there will be a few that are not covered and fly out pissed off and attack you and your kids. Using a bee suit while dusting against wasps is useless as they will jab right through it and sting you unless you smoke them out first. This method keeps you away from them and at a very reasonable cost. It's a great idea.

    • @ManCrafting
      @ManCrafting 8 лет назад +4

      +capthook26 I've treated thousands of nests. I've been stung 3-4 times. I've never been stung through a bee suit. As for the dust stirring the up? It might, but they are no longer able to focus on you as a target.

    I have used this method a few times and although the preparation is a PITA it works very well. Mine was on the 3nd floor eaves so I had to have the shop vac in the house with the hose hanging out of the window. I would only make one suggestion. In the very early morning 5:30-6am they are still all in their nest so this is the best time to start the shop vac. Have it set up the night before. That way there is no one pissed at you during the set up and one by one, the "food hunters" come out of their nest looking for food. If your hose is set up right at their point of exit/entry you get 100% of them and it takes less time. But excellent video.

    Nice video, glad to see you had good success! That is a challenging spot to reach with poison, even if that were what you wanted to do. Now that the colony is gone, I would suggest sealing up those gaps with caulk.
    I have a colony of yellowjackets myself this month. Mine is up under the lower edge of vinyl siding, down low, and just over a slab. There's as little as 1" of clearance in most places, so it's too low to use a killer spray. So the next time I have decent weather, I'm gonna give this a 30-60 minute trial period and see how many of the little SOBs I can catch!!
    I HAD rigged up my shop-vac already today, but it started raining before I could give 'er a proper go. Had to put the vac inside. WOMP-WOMP :o(

    I've done this, but found that it does not address the thousand or so eggs (many of which are ready to hatch) or the queen and drones who are left behind. You are only capturing workers. Many workers don't leave the nest because they are constructing new nest by eating your wood. Definitely chem treat afterwards.

    Cool, thats exactly how I do my shop vac (with water+soap). I use it in the honey house in the fall to get rid of the litttle bastards. They like to fly back and forth along the fluorescent light. I just hold the nozzle at one end and they just fly themselves in. I did learn that without the soapy water they just crawl back out. I guess they can hold their breath alot longer than I can!

      Next time, pour a mason jar half full with gasoline. Then put as much styrofoam in the gas until the gas becomes gelatinous. That, my friend, is napalm. Pour the napalm in the hole at night, lay a piece of newspaper over the hole. Light the newspaper. Stand back. The roaring flame that will shoot out if the hole like a Saturn rocket will guarantee instant termination to every f**king yellow jack and larvae in the nest. You’re welcome!

    Wouldn't a wider attachment head work faster?

    • @PrerequisiteName
      @PrerequisiteName  8 лет назад +3

      salaciousBastard Perhaps. My thinking was by restricting the end of the hose, the vacuum would be harder to escape (air moves faster, lower pressure etc.), but a wider end might be better, especially if you have a wider opening. I imagine it's situationally dependent. If anyone has tried. Report back.

    • @thicknjustrite
      @thicknjustrite 5 лет назад +1

      @@PrerequisiteName The wider head attachment loses the direct suction because it's not pressed against something to cover the wider opening, like a work bench or carpeting. Think about it. Would a giant 7-11 cup fitted to the end make any difference? Ends up covered on the inside & outside with the pests, but the intake remains the same. Now if you were to attach 2 wide enough tubes on both sides of the bottom of the cup & fitted the tubes into the main tube, you're cookin with gas baby! (More on a more conventional design to follow).
      Ok, again, if there were 3 suction holes in a wider head it would serve its purpose much better. An adapter for this purpose can easily be made, in a kit with the special wide head, which we could purchase. Attachment should be clear, not black, so you can see the suction working, if it gets clogged, & it's always cool seeing em getting suck(er)ed in lol.
      As is though, works better only on flat surfaces, like getting a bunch off the walls & floors.

This will ignite the gas trail, that just so happens to lead inside their home. Yes, THEIRS. So really, you are not burning down your home, just killing their home with fire. Some will escape and seek revenge. That is why you wear a high temp suit, and ensure you are equipped with a flame thrower to catch any that may attempt to evade death by fire.
