  • Want to know how to get the page numbering to start on the 3rd page? Or how to have different headers & footers across sections, manage columns or even how to have some pages in landscape & others in portrait.
Word's "Section breaks" are the key to unlocking this functionality, but it isnt that simple. I walk through some complicated examples in this video.

I'm a bit late to finding your video, but I think it has given me the information I need to fix the headers I have been fighting with for over a week. Thanks much!

Thank you David for this explanation! The page numbering has been a pain & headache to me for years in the work I do. The gem for me in this vid was explaining how exactly the 'Different First Page' function works. Now I understand and can quickly solve page numbering issues I will encounter.

This was the best by far. I would love a video on automatic footers. I added a document as an "Exhibit" to a document and it automatically created a new header and footer section and labeled it Exhibit M which was the next letter in the Exhibits and I have no idea how it happened. I can't figure out how to include it in the TOC even though all of the ones before it are in there and labeled as Exhibits even though they are not called Exhibits anywhere else in the document but the footer. You can't click on the footer and add it as a level in the TOC. So frustrating. The person who built the document is no longer with us so no help there. I'm new and I'm spending so much time trying to update Rules and Regulations. I appreciate the videos. I'm leaps and bounds ahead of where I was. Thank you!

Hello that’s great that it helped! These things in Word are way more complicated than they should be in my opinion. I’m not sure about your other question sorry

How do I adjust the header section's page range once I have already accidentally inserted a section break? In other words, I want to change which page of the doc the header section ends on.

Hi I think the only way is to delete the section breaks then add new ones

hello David, How do I have page numbers for certain section at top of the page, and for certain another sections at bottom of the page?? I tried it many times but the problem was there were page numbers on top as well as bottom on the same page... when I tried to remove the top page numbers, page numbers at the top from another section also got removed.

Hello David, how do I delete the page numbering in section 1 without it deleting my page numbering in section 2?

Hello David, I have really liked your video. I have a question that you didn't cover. Per example, if I have a document with several different sections and I want each section to have a header and a footer. I want in the header to display the (number of the page in this SECTION)/(number of pages in this SECTION as well), and then I want in the footer to display the number of the page in THE DOCUMENT (not the section).
When I insert the number of page in the footer (of the document) it usually displays the one in the section. And if I format the number in the footer, the number in the header is also formatted.
I am trying to solve this problem but I don't know how to search for it nor how to do it. Is it possible to do it?

@@learnspreadsheets No worries, i found a solution that involves bookmarks and formulas (PageRef function). It's a bit tricky but it works. Thank you for your reply!

@@arturogunther3181 Hey do you have the solution? Kinda in the same situation here, would be great if there was some info! Thanks in advance

@@nanda28cc Hey Nanda, I found a solution. The trick is to use bookmarks. You have to insert the number of pages in the footer (this will display the total number of pages). Then, in the header of a given section (lets say, section i), it gets a bit tricky.
First, you have to insert a bookmark in the PREVIOUS section (section i-1) (give it whatever name you want, a short one, preferably. Lets say "Sprev"), at the very end of that section.
Then, you have to go to your current section (section i) and type a special command: "{ = {PAGE} - {PageRef Sprev} }" (where Sprev is the bookmark you previously added). Please, note that this brackets are special ones, you can only use them if you press "ctrl+F9". This formula will give you the number of the page you are within this give section (i).
The total number of pages in the section can be added easily (i assume you know how to do it)

The same page numbers coming on all pages, starting from page number 3, all other pages are "1", still can't fix it. So annoying

Given the title is "complex page numbering" it would be nice to start with that. I had to watch all the header stuff before you got to the key item of interest. You covered it in fewer than two minutes but it took me eight minutes to get there. Well done otherwise.

Hello David, has your ADHD been diagnosed yet? (Joke) your presentation would gain value if you slowed it all down a bit, made your pointer a bigger, and moved it rather more slowly -- remember, many of us are gradually approaching senility and are not quite as hyperactive as you.
