Final Fantasy VIII Concert Variations

- I've been working on a Final Fantasy VIII video for a few months now. As I was working on that, I had the idea of uploading all the variations of the concert at this part of the game, as depending on what instruments you choose, the cutscene that follows will change. It's a pretty cool feature in the game I think and so I tried to do every variation that I could think of.
The first time, I played the Eyes on Me instrumental.
The second time, I played the Irish Jig.
The third time, I chose two instruments from each of the above songs.
The fourth time, I chose three instruments from one and one instrument from the other.
The first part of each cutscene will begin the same, but then will change once Rinoa and Squall are on the solar panels (or whatever they are) together.

I've heard people argue that the other concerts were unnecessary, but they've got depth that's overlooked.
In the Eyes on Me concert, Rinoa starts the argument because of the "terrible" rendition of her mother's song. It's the only memory of Julia she has left. Her nostalgia gets the best of her and it creates a misunderstanding. She's vulnerable to that, and Seifer even tries to use nostalgia during the end of disc 2 to convince her to not fight. In the same way she sees her father, Caraway, she sees Squall here as uncaring when he was being honest. Though Squall isn't too great here either, he's not trying to sound convincing and he lies to himself about wanting to be alone. Caraway cared for Rinoa, he was just too busy and didn’t show it much. Squall is much the same. This gives so much more impact during the Ragnarok Scene, because Squall mentions that he can’t be her mom, the one who should’ve been there for Rinoa, but upon realizing just how much Squall is going to sacrifice for her, she moves on, saying that Squall now gives her the most comfort in her life.
In the mixed concert, Squall ends up pushing Rinoa away. He’s mad that Rinoa called him irritating. Squall really cares about what others think about him. Ever since Ellone had to leave, he started to question if Ellone liked him at all. He was insecure about that. Throughout the game, Squall takes teasing too seriously. Having terrible social skills, he doesn’t understand when people are trying to have fun and not insulting him. Seeing Rinoa “call” him irritating hurts more since he really does care about her, even up until this point. He becomes more dismissive than he ever was, even if Rinoa’s no saying anything to hurt him. It’s only until she asks him if she’s not good enough that it clicks with Squall and it gets him to say that it’s not her fault, though only in his mind. It makes Squall’s confession so much more emotional, because he’s finally admitting his insecurities, where he finally admits that he cares so much
Most of the time, I hear stuff that the choices the player can make between Squall and Rinoa ruin their love story, but I’d wager it only strengthens it. Point is, Squall is hiding his feelings. His thoughts conflict with the bad choices the player makes. I’ve always like that you can decide how ready Squall is to open up to others. It works in Rinoa’s favor as well, because you can see over time her growth and her understanding of Squall.
This is the perfect analysis for this! I really like that the game gives player choice but there are times when it makes the romance seem really weird or forced. I enjoy seeing the variations on subsequent playthroughs but most people aren't going to play the game multiple times to see the different variations that give more insight into Squall or Rinoa. I wish there was a way to see all the variations in game during the same playthrough so people could experience it.

I'm replaying the game now and Squall is a lot less annoying than I remember. His reactions are very human and understandable. Characters like Zell and Selphie are running around in anime magic land, while Squall over here trying to figure out how to deal with his abandonment issues and inability to read people. He comes across as cold because he's afraid of loss.
pretty interesting how different variations had an impact on the conversation but it goes to show how music can affect peoples moods

OH MY GOD THANKS SO MUCH FOR UPLOADING IT! I never knew there are such variation beside the Irish Jig and Eyes on Me version. You are the best. For me, the best variation outcome is the second. When Rinoa said "we love you and want to live together with you through this time", it did hit hard for a loner. Kinda matching up with the ending when Squall got trapped in time compression and Rinoa helped him out, wasn't it?

I ended up making this video because I was making an FF8 analysis video and wanted to bring up how the game had variations of cutscenes based off player actions in game. But after recording all the variations, I felt like I could put them all together in a separate video because I found it interesting. Something I would like to do, but don't have the footage of is do a video of every variation of the cutscene when you go to Zell's room during the Galbadian occupation of Balamb Town. Depending on who you bring with Squall and Zell, the cutscene is different, and I really liked how it helps give character to each person in your party. It'd take some time before I could work on that though.

Yep, there's a couple of variations of other scenes, too!
I always did the irish jig version.... i have never even heard of the other version until now.... tq for completing the what if moments that i never spend the time to explore
Glad so many people are able to experience this! This game had a lot of variations of cutscenes, which I thought was amazing. It's not something a lot of players will witness unfortunately.

This is the first time I've ever noticed that they just moving extremely heavy equipment around like it's nothing 🤣
