This was really really helpful. I was told i had to take the whole thing. Meaning the plug and unscrew the whole system thing. Didnt realise you could just twist this spring and get it out in 5 seconds. Ive put thejob off for about a month because i thought it was going to be big. I had the opposite problem though. The plug wouldnt stay down. So just replaced that click clack (Or what ever you call it.) Plug and play 👍
Thanks for the video. I've got a house full of jammed pop ups! 4 at my last count. Problem is, the pistons (splines?) won't release from the waste. Any suggestions on that? Also, we're in a hard water area. When you refer to "the plastic ones" do you mean the pistons or the whole waste? I'm happy to replace the waste if needed but want to do it with something worthwhile.
Thanks so much! My waste was getting stuck in and almost impossible to pop up again - was considering having to ask the plumber as I had no idea how to remove it, but thanks to your video I have now done so and I have the parts of it currently soaking in Viakal.
Had this issue and its fixed now. Wish i saw this video earlier. Because now I need help with opposite issue cause the spring won't lock in place anymore at all.
Really pleased I could help! If it is an occurring problem then I have a video on how to replace it with a new waste with plastic internals rather than metal, which is far less susceptible to seizing up. 👍🏻
My wife had a face on her that could crack granite about the stuck plunge plug in our bathroom. The kids continued to use it and left the water for her to 'deal' with. I got it in the neck because I'm a white male who obviously knows how to fix everything in this world. Your video saved a MAJOR issue in my marriage. Of course, some chocolate(over 400g bar) and 'oh, you are right dear' settled her down. I may even get a special kiss and a dinner when I get home! THANK YOU for explaining how to make my wife happy.
@@lesterbathrooms3948 My wife is actually SMILING. Think Hattie Jacques! She thanks you too. If you want her I'll exchange for a motorbike....even an old Russian one with plenty to tinker on. Just as much hassle, bur way lass moaning. THANK YOU once again. I owe you a curry mate.
I put things that need descaling into the kettle at the same time I descale it. Strips all the limescale away and gets right into every nook. I use Oust kettle descaler, and after the items are cleaned and removed from the kettle, I spray them with 3-in-1 oil afterwards (as wd40 evaporates). Sometimes I use wd40 in the process too, but not to lubricate before assembling again.
Hi Rob - I've a Duravit ceramic pop up which keeps sticking. Only 18 months old. The mechanism is plastic. Can I still use WD40 on plastic or is that a no no?? Thanks
Hi, great video. Do you have any suggestions for releasing the threaded post? We have one sink where it has seized up and won’t turn or come out with pliers/spanner. Thanks.
@@jm450 yeah my issue is the inner part is broken so all the others available don’t fit the metal waste unit. Threads in the wrong spot so will have to change it like you say. Thanks for getting back to me. Appreciate it!
I appreciate this is an old video but for some reason it's just come onto my feed. You say you now fit the plastic ones as they're better? I'd have to disagree. We have a plastic one in the bath that pops up for a couple of seconds and I assume some kind of vacuum is created by the water draining and sucks the 'plug' back down to seal it. Is there any way to stop this?
When I mention ‘plastic’ I’m talking about the internal spring section of a ‘click clack’ waste. It sounds like your bath has a ‘pop up’ waste rather than a click clack. Do you empty the bath by rotating a section by the overflow (pop up) or are you physically pushing the plug and it springs up (click clack)?
I have done all you showed in the past, installed mine in 2017, but it has now broken off completely!! Just rotted off, could not believe it! It was a metal one. So I suppose only option is to get a completely new whole waste and plug?
Hi it's me again the top of my waste pulls off and the springy part of it is plastic held in place by a plastic nut I'm loath ? to unscrew it as I'm afraid the springy part will fall down the waste never to be seen again could you kindly tell me how to get the springy part out and WD 40 it .Thanks Cheers Eddie
Hi Rob, hope you can help. My girlfriend's bath pop up plug, goes up and down nicely but, she is losing all her bath water, she can hear it trickling away. As each day passes she has to bath in less time as the speed with which it runs out is increasing.
excellent video, just one thing that worked for me: I couldn't unscrew it as is shown in this video, so i just took WD40, started spraying that MF and after a while i managed to pull the plunger out with pliers. Then just sprayed it some more, pushed it in and out a few times and in
Hi there, I have a push pop drain similar to that one, except mine is a fixed circular outer part, and the push pop is in the middle. However, I've pushed it down, but now it's not coming back up, it's stuck. I can't turn it left or right but I cannot access it, its actually in the 'push' position, so I can't rotate it. Is there any advice you can give to fix it and get it to pop up 🙂
Hi, that’s a tricky one to get out. The only thing you may be able to do is disconnect the waste trap from the basin waste underneath (put a small bowl underneath to catch any water) once disconnected you could push something up from underneath (maybe a screwdriver) to spring it upwards. Please take care if you try this, it may not work and you might just need a new basin waste.
I have even worst version of this, where the push part goes a bit below the sink level. So when it gets stuck there, there is no way to unscrew it anymore as you can't grab the sides. Currently trying to come up with some idea to resolve this. Devil himself has made this design. :/
Using a toothbrush is ok, but then using the same toothbrush for brushing teeth, after cleaning with oil or chemicals? Sounds like a health risk to me.
This just saved me SOOO much stress - was planning to replace the whole thing! Thank you!
I appreciate it! You have a fun sense of humor. Love the British sensibility of things. Thank you.
An absolute pleasure Michael. All the best! 🙏🏻
TBH you made my day. I was thinking of replacing my whole basin. Its wonderful tips and thank you so much

Thank you for revealing the secrets of the pop up waste ! I never knew that you could unscrew it ! or remove it ! Cheers Eddie
Thanks!
Amazing! Thank you!! 🤩
Helpful thank you. If I have to replace it with a plastic one, what is it called to ask for it?!
Thank you so much. I have been unable to use my bath as the plug was stuck down. I am so grateful

Hi, what are the plastic ones?
Superb, Q. if I wanted to replace mine for plastic are they all the same sizes ? what would you advise.
They are better. Just get a basin 1”1/4 or 32mm one and it should be fine.

Where do you find plastic versions of the push button for the drain plug as everywhere i could only see brass ones
same here all i can find are metal ones
