    • @kingofbudokai
      @kingofbudokai 5 месяцев назад +12

      There might be if that was actually what happened, but it isn't. Wan Shi Tong gave up on humanity years before this episode takes place, back when Zhao learned about the physical identity of the moon and ocean spirits. This was just a matter of him losing his temper. He lost faith in humanity a long time ago, but NOW they genuinely pissed him off.

    • @ryanakers1372
      @ryanakers1372 5 месяцев назад +21

      @kingofbudokai But he still left the library in the physical world after Zhao's visit. There's definitely no doubt Zhao deeply hurt Wan Shi Tong, but on the Avatar's word, he allowed the group to look through the library. Then, after he was betrayed by the Avatar, Wan Shi Tong decided to move his library out of the reach of humans forever.
      To me, that says he still had a tiny sliver of hope for humanity. But that hope was smashed by the Avatar's betrayal.

    This episode is so interesting just because Wan Shi Tong (the owl) is absolutely right. He has seen human history in this world, which we can assume has had countless wars, and he has seen them use knowledge for conflict repeatedly. Even his last visitor, Zhao, used the knowledge he learned about the Moon and Ocean spirits to try to cripple the Northern Water Tribe, as well as all Waterbenders everywhere, forever. Why shouldn't he believe that humans will always do this? We always have (in real life and in Avatar)! And even despite this, when our characters, THE GOOD GUYS, come in, he gives them the benefit of the doubt. He doesn't trust them to be any different, but he lets them in to learn all the same. And keep in mind, all three of these characters- Sokka, Katara, and Aang (and the Professor too although we haven't really known him long) are genuinely good people! But all the same, they lie to Wan Shi Tong's face, and use his knowledge to wage war. Even the heroes are just as corruptable as he thinks. Sokka lied to get knowledge on how to better fight against his enemies, and Aang and Katara went right along with it.
    And do you know what the real kicker of this all is? There are no consequences! Appa gets taken, but thats largely unrelated, so if you want to argue its cosmic retribution, I won't argue with you, but nothing directly happens to the 3 who went inside. The professor stays of course, but by his own choice. Sokka, in particular, lies to him, steals from him, and then beats him over the head with a club, all for the goal of hurting the Fire Nation, and faces no consequences for his actions. Our heroes lied to get ahead, pay no price, and have a path to victory because of it.
    And Sokka is literally in the top 10, if not top 5 of best people in the series. Like I love Sokka, he's amazing. One of my favorites. But if he is one of the best, and yet capable of this, then what does that mean for humans as a whole?
    That damn owl is completely right about us.

    Many of us agree with you that Wan Shi Tong was the victim here and his actions were justified. Team Avatar handled the situation poorly from the beginning. Instead of lying that they were only "looking for knowledge for knowledge's sake", they should have been more honest about their intent but reframe it in a way that would make more sense to a spirit, i.e. seeking information to help end the 100 year war and restore balance. You'd expect that spirits wouldn't be too interested in human politics or conflicts but they do seem interested the maintenance of "balance" in the world and the fact that is one of the Avatar's duties.
    Although visually the Library is being buried, Wan Shi Tong isn't taking it underground. He mentioned that he brought his Library from the spirit world to the physical world in order to share his knowledge with humans so when he says he's "taking [his] library back", he means that he's taking it back to the spirit world so humans can no longer access it. Ironically, Professor Zei was exactly the kind of patron, Wan Shi Tong desired, someone who is truly only interested in knowledge for knowledge's sake.

    • @samuelaltamira7993
      @samuelaltamira7993 5 месяцев назад +12

      I doubt reframing it that way would do anything, Wan Shi Tong already said he distrust humans for using knowledge to destroy enemies so even if it was for ending the war he probably wouldn't care and deny entry entirely. 1. You could be correct in he want's knowledge to grow and a war doesn't facilitate that or 2. He is so neutral to human politics that he doesn't care what happens only gaining the information as knowledge/history to record later.

      Perfect way to show the character introduced as this near unstoppable beast with crazy abilities as vulnerable while simultaneous not just "Kryptoniting" her - she still shows her insane ability by both finding the library underground and holding up for as long as she did (much longer than shown om-screen, given the timescale fades when Aang and Sokka were checking the planetarium dates) but highlighting her weakness both in the sand limiting her current abilities while creating the Superman problem. Meaning she, as strong as she is, still has room to grow and improve and, like Superman, is faced with the dilemma of not being able to handle every crisis at once.

    I actually love how complex this show truly is. They're not afraid to create discussions about morality that some shows don't do these days because of wokism and DEI.
    On the hand, the piece of intel they gathered from here was valuable to possibly saving the world and stopping the forces of evil. Yet on the other hand, they did it by betraying the owl as you said. Is worth it to sacrifice an individual for the sake of many? Is it right to violate the neutrality of spirits in this case?
    It is what makes the show so timeless and a piece of art that no other shows I've seen since can replicate.
    And the thing is, I discover new things with every rewatch. It really is the show that keeps on giving.

    You're not supposed to see the Owl as in the wrong. But the Gaang is also right. They need that information. It's crucial. Of course they're going to lie to the Owl. Both the Owl and the Gaang are both in the right and in the wrong at the same time. That's what's supposed to be so conflicting about this episode. It's that the Owl doesn't realize that these are the people who are trying to END the war, not that they're the ones waging war on others. But he's also right that humans are always fighting and abusing knowledge for power. The Gaang isn't wrong for lying to the Owl and getting the information they need. When you think about it, you just end up going in circles. But that's honestly the point. The Owl deserved Professor Zei, someone who just appreciated knowledge for knowledge's sake. But the Gaang went there for a specific reason and they weren't going to let some out of touch Spirit stop them. This is life and death.

    You can blame Appa being kidnapped on Sokka. If he didn’t lie, no sinking library. If the library doesn’t sink, then Toph could protect Appa

    Granted everyone is to blame for betraying Wan Shi Tong, but I was especially mad at Sokka this episode. He was the one who practically dragged the whole team into his lie in the first place. The guy threw Aang's Avatar title around as a cover which is not a cool thing to do to a friend imo. Honestly, they could've still reasoned with him to get access. Also, if they didn't steal, wrote down the important info, and kept their mouths shut, they would've been out in time to save Appa. 🤷‍♀️

    I mean they did the owl dirty yeah but they also wanted to gain knowledge on how to defeat the military country that is waging war on the entire world for about 100 years so i think its a little bit justified xD

    P.S. - Aang is my top character, doesn’t matter how many times I watch The Desert, every time is painful for me

    Wan Shi Tong, the self-proclaimed guardian of knowledge, claims a position of moral superiority by restricting humanity's access to his vast library. However, his actions reveal a stark apathy towards the world's suffering. By hoarding knowledge during a time of crisis, such as the war with the Fire Nation, he betrays his supposed role as a wise overseer. True moral superiority would compel him to use his wisdom to aid and protect those in need. Instead, his detachment and refusal to share critical information make him complicit in the very suffering he claims to rise above.
    Moreover, Wan Shi Tong’s stance is hypocritical. He criticizes humans for seeking knowledge, yet he has built his collection through the efforts of his "foxy" assistants, who likely gather-and potentially steal-information from the human world. This double standard is glaring; he benefits from human knowledge while denying others the chance to use it for good. His blanket judgment of humanity fails to recognize the potential for positive change in individuals like Aang and Sokka. They sought his knowledge not out of greed, but out of a desperate need to restore balance and peace. By withholding this critical information, Wan Shi Tong not only fails in his responsibility to use his power wisely but also perpetuates the very cycle of distrust and division he decries.

    Imma save y’all the trouble 🤣 y’all won’t be seeing that guy again. The Owl took his library back to the spirit realm and him with it. I’m sure he’s fine since he’s a true scholar and the Owl likes that. He’s definitely reading for ever tho. Also the story will be very sad from now on brace yourself 👀 can’t wait for Tales of Ba Sing Se

    I hate the blame Sokka gets
    1 thing saving the world is most important and their own goal for peace
    The other thing is the definition of a library is
    a building or room containing collections of books, periodicals, and sometimes films and recorded music for use or borrowing by the public or the members of an institution
    If Wan Shi didn't call it a library I'd agree but he did
    So it's not his choice how the knowledge is used
    He should have taking it into the spirit realm after Zhao if he didn't want this to happen
    The humans the living world is more important and to team avatar its their job to save it
    And it is not Sokkas fault Appa got taken (some commenters are saying) yes he wasn't very nice in this episode but even if the tower wasn't falling
    Aang and Co wouldn't have known he was in Danger and just taking longer in the library (because of no rush)
    And Toph would have never been able to defend against them anyway because she wouldn't be able to feel them

    Trust me the owl is FINE be more concerned for Appa. Sokka was definitely looking at the bigger picture. As far as professor Zay goes he is completely screwed due to his own stupidity.

    it's true that Owl deserves better, but in the current situation to defeat the invasion it's the only way. It's not encouraged, but without it the fire mages will just take over the world and anyway everything on earth including libraries will be invaded and destroyed. Aang's team is no killers compared to the invaders.

      Its a spirit library. It was never man-kind's to use by default. He was sharing it with others as a courtesy, and they used the knowledge he provided them to commit horribly violent acts against others. I would be mad at people misusing my library for such corrupt purposes and would also take the library back to the spirit world. Wan Shi Tong doesn't owe humanity anything. Their greed shouldn't be his concern. Wan Shi Tong did nothing wrong.
