It's actually the perfect time for that punny title. Aang is experiencing genuine pain and anger which we don't see often (last time was in Book 1 when he saw the remains of Gyatso). Appa is the last of his original family. Also the spirit animal is the most precious for any Avatar, not just Aang. So at 13:10, the reason you can see that all the past Avatars are genuinely pissed as well.
I never noticed that! The next scene they show Toph she has a stunned/shocked look on her face. Yeah, that must have been a pretty scary experience for her.
Seeing you guys give Katara the recognition she deserves means the world to me. She can hold her emotions and the group together like this because she has had to fill in the role of the mother for Sokka, ever since she was taken by the fire nation. You can clearly see the hurt she has been through in order to get to this level of maturity... I cry every time when she looks up at Aang, with that tired look, then shows him this compassion to calm him down.
Really happy and proud to see you two recognize the significance of Aang hunting down the vulture and him crying in the avatar state. Such a powerfully underrated episode
S tier episode for sure. Anyone who disagrees only watches the show for the fight scenes. I’m still in awe of the writers ability to capture the emotional weight that is present in this episode. It is supremely masterful work on their part
This is also Toph's first time "seeing" the avatar state. You can see the shock in her reaction. With the fuzziness from the sand, she can only hear things being destroyed and overlapping anger voices from where Aang is standing and suddenly being dragged and getting told to run.
So, imagine Toph’s fear when she hears and feels Aang go into the Avatar State. The girl is blind, standing on a surface she can barely “see” on and all of a sudden her new travel companion gets taken over by his past lives and starts a sandstorm. Sokka’s usually goofing off but is now telling Appa’s kidnappers to run for their safety.
I think many people forget what an incredible person Katara is, this episode shows it by seeing how Katara understands why Aang yells at them and is incredibly angry, she knows what it's like to lose someone important in your life and that's why when Aang enters Avatar state she is not afraid to help the scared and angry boy behind that scary Avatar, she doesn't hesitate to comfort him and share her pain while doing so. Katara is a beautiful and realistic character.
You guys have no Idea how much I love that scene: Aang crying in the Avatar State for Appa, and Katara without saying anything, just holding Him and crying in the end. That’s heartbreaking 💔🥺 my favorite scene from the entire show. Such a great Reaction. Greetings from NYC.
That ending, imagine being a 9 year old kid seeing this on TV and having to wait 1 more week for the next episode. That's why Avatar is the GOAT of serious american cartoon.

Yes, Aang the pacifist kills a creature he didn't have to kill out of anger and vengeance. What's also interesting is you see how deadly an Air-Bender can be when they don't hold back. Aang decapitated that buzzard wasp from a kilometer away with a swipe. He uses the same movement to destroy those sand-ships. You see him hitting Zuko and others with the same type of swipe but only pushes them back. If Aang, even without being in the Avatar state, went all out any enemy around him would be dead from invisible wind blades while they are trying to dodge tornadoes. Remember, Monk Gyatso killed scores of Fire Benders even while they were amped up due to Sozin's Comet. Air-bending is crazy OP if the wielder is angry or ruthless.
To be fair, there is a lot that a ruthless bender can do with any element. A ruthless water bender could freeze all of the water in your body, which would literally stab you internally on a microscopic level from the ice shards formed. They could manipulate the stomach acid inside your body and send it roaring through your lungs and colon. They could pull all of the moisture out of your eyes and render you permanently blind, etc. Air bending isn't uniquely overpowered. EVERY kind of bending has the capacity to be devastating if wielded without mercy.
It's a low resolution show, and it has a thin neck. You really can't tell with confidence. Also, S3 spoilers When Aang is talking to a previous Air Nomad Avatar, he says he has *certainly* never taken a life.
That last scene always gets me. Aang lost all his people and Katara lost a parent. They're both kids who experienced loss. No words needed, just good animation and music. One of the most emotional moments in Avatar for me.

“There are three things all wise men fear: the sea in storm, a night with no moon, and the anger of a gentle man.” - Patrick Rothfuss, "The Wise Man's Fear".
This episode is why Katara is one of my favorite characters. Aang was too upset to be helpful, Sokka was high like a kite and Toph couldn't really do a lot since they were on sand. Despite being 14 and in a pretty difficult situation, she still carried the group on her back and kept a level-headed attitude. It speaks of her bravery when she's willing to risk her own life to calm an enraged Avatar even when there's no certainty it'll work. I always like to imagine this episode as a middle finger to all the Katara haters in the fandom.
Also, she’s a water bender in a desert. Toph can sort of bend sand, Katara is actually more “out of her element” here and does well to not let her loss of bending affect her.
@@cahan557 True and that is the reason of why Katara is more than just a "good waterbender" she has an incredible mental strength, she is very brave and will always do whatever it takes to protect those she loves!
It was Toph's first time to witness Aang in the avatar state, she was genuinely terrified of him because she has never seen this side of him before, unlike Sokka and Katara who have dealt with this situation before at the southern air temple.
This episode broke me, but not for reasons you might think. I remember it vividly, sat at home on the couch watching this with my brother, then Sokka drank the cactus juice and my brother kept glancing at me, at one point I got fed up and asked him why he was looking at me, he said "You're kinda like Sokka on cactus juice"... I'll never forget.
This episode is so sad. Aang was such a buoyant, unattached, joyful child at first, and it took so much trauma to wear that down. We finally got there, and it's devasting. Where does he go from here? But this show always manages to balance out the darkness with humor, and high as a kite Sokka does that just fine.

Like many other, I think Season 3 is the best (cause they just keep building on top of what is already great), but this is my favorite episode of the entire series.
You have to consider Toph's perspective when Aang went avatar mode. Hearing those voices come from Twinkle Toes and all of the debris and Sokka saying to run would have left her completely confused and likely lowkey scared.
This is actually the point where Toph was dumbfounded and realize that there is actually a line that separates the ordinary benders to the avatar, Toph got a jaw dropped not seeing a thing but only feeling and hearing how powerful that delicate twinkle toes is.
You know what i've been thinking about? Just imagine that - the next avatar will glimpse into Aang's past, same way Aang doing in ATLA, and there will be just 100 years of just staring into ice. Imagine how funny it'll be. Its like one of those videos "10 hours of silence but sometimes you can hear metal pipe falling" on youtube.

Appa is Aang's spirits guide, so, much more than just being the last of his race, it also is the closest thing spiritual to Aang. Toph being blind and up to this point has not seen/felt the Avatar State yet. So, when he spoke and all the previous Avatars spoke through him was an awakening to Toph, in a way, of how powerful Aang really is. Aang even without the avatar state without holding back is probably one of the most if not the most powerful bender in the series. Azula stands close because of her berserk fighting style.
This is one of my favorite episodes first of all I love any episode that aang enters the avatar state but seeing aang act so different was really good for character building. You guys aren’t ready for episode 15 and 16
I think this part of the series is one of the most important arcs for Aang in the show. It really humanized Aang and helped strengthen the audiences feelings for him. It's unfortunate that Aang is one of the weakest characters of his own series at times, so this episode and the ones that follow really help the audience connect with him.
Those creatures were a combo of bees and vultures, bees makes their honey by eating nectar from plants then spitting it back up. The honey these vulture-bees made tasted like rotten penguin so...this show can be kinda creepy.

Those creatures were a combo of bees and vultures, bees makes their honey by eating nectar from plants then spitting it back up. The honey these vulture-bees made tasted like rotten penguin so...this show can be kinda creepy.
Guys I love your reactions.. And I swear I'll never text a spoiler.. But This Avatar series is beginning from now.. Last episodes and season were just like a tutorial.. The real series is beginning right now

Katara is to Aang like Black Widow is to Hulk - Black Widow can calm the Hulk so he turns back to Dr Banner, in the same way, Katara can calm Aang when he is in the Avatar state and bring him back to normal Aang.
