MARC Commuter Cars on California Zephyr

The westbound "California Zephyr" speeds through the town of Agency, Iowa on July 10, 2016. Behind the locomotives of this Amtrak #5 is a heritage baggage car that still has the Phase IV paint scheme which includes the old logo. This type of baggage car had been replaced on the "Zephyr" late last year. AMTK 1710 here was originally a coach when it was first built by the Budd Company in 1953 for the Santa Fe Railway as ATSF 2836. Amtrak inherited it when they took over passenger operations in 1971. They converted it to a baggage car in 1996: www.trainweb.or.... And it's not even close to being the most unique sight on this train.
After #5's Superliners are four bi-level commuter cars from MARC Train (originally Maryland Rail Commuter). These cars are on their way to the test track near Pueblo, Colorado where they will be tested with first of the new Siemens SC-44 Charger diesel-electric locomotives. MARC has ordered eight Chargers to be delivered by late 2017: www.railwayage..... Tagging along with these four is another heritage baggage car. This one, AMTK 1714, also started its life as a coach for the Santa Fe Railway. It was ATSF 2850 when it was built by the Budd Company in 1953. I didn't realize the California Zephyr had to ride on such rough track these days. That's American infrastructure for you . . . It definitely wasn't that bad when I rode the California Zephyr in late 1987.

On the same day, I was in target during a severe thunderstorm and the power went out for 3 seconds then came back on with only a few lights still off and on our way back home I saw the engines and baggage car at my station but unfortanatly didn't see the Marc cars :(
