I am Russian-American and agender/non-binary; while I am obviously not a POC and thus experience the world vastly differently, I can relate to some of the linguistic and cultural elements that you all describe here. You've done a beautiful job with this documentary - keep doing this kind of thing, it's amazing!

It's interesting when you talk about Spanish being very gendered, as a French speaking person and Spanish speaking person, I always feel that Spanish is so much easier to make neutral with just an "e" while french is just a gendered nightmare. But it's also true that compared to English then Spanish must look also like a gendered nightmare lol
Nouah the thing is this whole "e" as a neutral for adjectives and nouns in spanish started really little time ago and people are adjusting, there's still a lot of controversy about it and i think most spanish teachers won't even mention it (i guess you're talking about saying "les alumnes" instead of "los alumnos")

As a spanish speaker i can say that changing words with the E of X to make them neutral is a terrible idea that makes the words unpronounceable or results in things like this: Pena = shame Pene = penis

I'm a Spanish teacher in a boarding school in Vermont. I've talked about this with my students several times already. The result? one of them finding this video and sharing it with me. I'm a Mexican national, immigrant, cis male. I'm a big advocate of elles, #ellesenlaRAE, despite the anger of many of my fellow Spanish teachers from other schools and fellow countrymen back where I was born and raised. I have many students in my class who identify as non-binary/gender fluid. With your blessing, I'll be using this wonderful video for another Spanish class to talk about intersectionality, diversity, and social justice. I'll even have my students creating vlogs in Spanish reacting to this wonderful and amazing video. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you for advocating! In Argentina there’s a marked difference between those using ellxs/elles and those who don’t, and I haven’t come out to a lot of people because of it. They may think that their hatred of inclusive language is limited to academic thought and a “radical” faction of feminism fighting heteronormativity...but also, that’s my gender identity you’re talking about. ♥️

I'm so grateful for this video. I'm a spanish non binarian and I've comed out to some of my friends but I'm having a lot of trouble to know what pronouns I wanted them to use to refer me, so this really helps a lot ^^
Same here! Also Mexican American/Latinx and non-binary genderqueer! I noticed a lot of non-binary spaces are full of white people, especially the non-Latinx ones!
I can very much relate to the gendered language thing as an Italian non-binary person. Having everyday social relations makes me incredibly dysphoric. A big hug to all the enbies out there who struggle with this!

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU SO MUCH for making this video. As a non-binary person living in Mexico I constantly feel so out of place and invisible. I always feel like my identity is only valid when i'm online because in real life, all these concepts of gender are just unknown to people, and with such a heavy gendered language that spanish is, it pains me that i have to present how i was asigned at birth every day beacause i know that people won't understand otherwise. And even when you try to explain to people or try to use neutral terms people just asume you're a "crazy millennial". When I began to question my gender identity, i found such a large community online that made me feel understood but then when i would try to look up videos or articles (or anything) in spanish that had to do with non-binary identities and i found hardly anything, that was really hard; i still felt alone and that no one in the latin community felt like me. It's cool to know that that's completely not true. Idk if anything of this made sense, it's hard for me to express myself in english sometimes. Thank you again, Ashley. THANK YOU SO MUCH, I was born in Mexico and all my life I felt excluded. When I learned english and came acroos the pronouns the/them/their I started to feel included and inclusive of others. Just last week, for the first time, I told a friend about it and it just felt so right!. When I speak spanish(which is like 80% of the time) I always try to talk in an inclusive manner but sometimes is a struggle because a lot of people don't get it and because of the limitations of the language.

Great, great video! That's so true, all languages by Latin origins are such a big trouble for non binary people. My language and my culture are Italian and as a non binary person I'm not included or considered as "valid" in any way in my country, it's very hard. But I am optimistic, hoping something could change, specially in language one day🤞🏾💛💛
By the way, as Latin evolved into Romance before modern Latin based languages... if we look at the origins of Spanish, 'elle' was the masculine article. Then the -le dropped off and the 'll' assimilated to one, and the final -e was not salient and dropped. I recommend a book titled: Latin Alive. It is a very important video, but there is misunderstanding regarding language and how it works. Spanish uses gender (category or type [masculine and feminine]). Table is feminine and projector is masculine. English uses 'sex' (male and female). Big difference. People are taking an incomplete understanding of other languages, such as Spanish, based on the functions of English. English is not grammatically gendered, it is sexed.
omfg thank you!!!!!!! Most of these people don't seem to comprehend that sex and gender in spanish aren't correlated most of the time. It's only when we're describing the sex of a living being when it comes into play. Even then, there are many exceptions. For example: el pájaro, los pájaros describe both singular and plural birds regardless of their sex; same with la zarigüella, las zarigüellas. These people are trying to implement and modify words to a language they etymologically and structurally dont understand.
Your phrasing at (5:50 - 6:00) about how girls and women experiences are changed by the presence of masculinity - fascinates me because it makes me think of the "cis-woman" debate. Women who refuse to be called "cis" are being called TERFs but their argument is basically they believe that transwomen (who were initially men) are entering the female space and making them change their experiences of being a biological woman to fit needs of a trans woman.
Cis and trans are just descriptive terms though. Whether you’re hetero or homosexual depends on a few variables but it would be ridiculous to claim exclusion when the term is accurate and has no pejorative connotation
That one person does not understand what Latin-American means... It doesn't mean Latin in the USA. It means Latin in North and South America, instead of Latin from Europe...

Speaking spanish isn't what makes us Latinx, and I don't mind Ashley identifying as such! Not to mention we don't even know that she doesn't speak spanish. And when we reinforce that latinx = poc, we do a disservice to brown and afro-latinxs who face discrimination from white/white passing latinxs. Hey Karen no worries about the spanish, I’m just a bit confused, I never said she is not Latinx, I said her experiences as Latinx are filled with privilege (which she acknowledges) and therefore come of as kinda like awkward, i think? I validate an encourage her identity as Latinx, I believe everyone who identifies as Latinx are completely Latinx (Including people not born in Latin America, non-spanish speakers, not having a direct latin family member, etc). And also I am not the Latinx police, so my opinion on that doesn’t even matter because I don’t dictate anyone's experience and I am not debating her identity because it would be irrelevant, wrong and dumb tbh. I was trying to highlight how identities and intersectionality come off as different (and maybe are different) in different spaces. And how it feels kinda awkward to compare her dialogue with the other people in this video. Just because her experiences (as understood) seem part of a different topic or space. I’ve heard this view of, for example, trans people who feel some sort of betrayal from passing trans people “que se cuelgan” de la identidad trans sin vivir las mismas experiencias of disproportionate rates of discrimination but using that language to identify themselves as trans. And how these people can damage the community by involuntarily silencing and taking space from the people who actually live through the trans experience, not just internally, but through interactions with society as non-passing trans people. To put it simply, it is as if a non-binary cis-passing person wanted to speak on the trans experience among non-passing trans people. They could add to the conversation and the dialogue but their experiences would be way different and filled with more privilege than anyone in the room which feels kinda awkward. Which isn’t wrong btw, I just think maybe it's worth talking about. Also, I might be completely wrong btw haha. And I acknowledge gender is different than culture, just comparing the identity part of it. cool. and also if it came of like i disliked this video I'm sorry, I really liked it.
I feel like this is a really important comment and I just wanted you to know that I feel the same way. I absolutely occupy a different space and have more privilege in the way I move through the world. Originally I didn't plan on being a part of the video at all, but it came down to the fact that my purpose in creating the video was both to shed light on a subject that affects many people very differently (even just being AFAB or AMAB experiences differ greatly), and to promote healing in a very particular place for me personally. For me, in this video, I needed to be able to do both. It's absolutely true that my experiences are different from the other folks in the video, in a way that is more salient then how their experiences may differ from each other, for example. I also think it is okay for those different conversations to take place in the same context. It's possible that I'm incorrect on that, and it's hard to determine when I'm so personally invested in the project and it has so much personal significance to me. I certainly didn't aim to occupy a space that isn't mine and if it came off that way I'm sorry.
Languages change often, and dramatically! English from only a few hundred years ago is not discernible to modern speakers. So language is changing without our attempts to impact it, and if it’s changing anyways it makes a lot of sense to work for intentional changes :)

This was very beautiful I'm very happy that latinx folks saw this. I'm white & non binary and it frustrates me to not see other types of repersentation other than white for envíes. When enbies come in all sorts of races and body sizes. So that's why I'm so happy that the latinx members in my enby community can see this and feel repersentive.
I have the same issue with language as a non-binary French-Canadian person (Québec). Our language is really gendered; we assigned a gender to everything. Having a gender neutral language to describe enby folx is almost impossible
Gabrielle Crovasce hello, im a canadian learning french at uni, and among our class we use "leur" and "iel" as the gender neutral pronouns, and the masculine endings, ex. alex est fort, iel a un chat. leur chat est gentil. this is only how we specifically tackle this, i dont know what other classes/groups do, but i hope this helps!
this is three years too late, but I'm wondering what people's opinion on the word "latinx" is. for context, I'm nonbinary and white and I don't speak spanish. the term always seemed kinda weird to me since in most cases it's cis people shoving X's into random word and calling it "inclusive". the only context that makes sense imo in mx. I've also seen a lot of spanish speaking people say that it makes no sense in the context of the language, and that "latine" would be a better gender-neutral option. but from this video, it seems that some people do seem to prefer the term "latinx." just wondering what other queer, trans, or nonbinary latine people think about this, and what term is generally preferred

Can someone here provide some information to common experiences in regards to finding your own identity as an latinx individual and coming out to family and friends? I want my character to be relatable and I don't know any latinx human in person.
I am learning Spanish and im non binary its very hard to get by using gender neutral terms in many languages and i don't know how i can do it without it hurting and giving dysphoria eventho i love languages
Ashley why do you use she/her pronouns if your non-binary? Do you go by them because its easier to manage socially since most people will instinctively call you she/her? Or are you simply pronoun indifferent? Do you use they/them pronouns in LGBTQ+ circles but she/her in regular daily life?
Pronouns are actually separate from gender identity! People can identify in a variety of ways and choose to use she/her and he/him pronouns as opposed to they/them or any other neo pronouns. For me, she/her pronouns are the most comfortable. And I reserve the right to re-evaluate that for myself whenever I want to or need to and to edit that as I see fit.
@@memosrt I don't know how to tell you this but all language is made up, and there's so much slang or changing of words that already exist that neutralizing a word using the actual rules of the language, quite honestly, isn't that big of a deal. The word does not belong to me, it had been around a few years before I started using it, but my culture *does* belong to me and everyone else who uses it. I'm sorry that for whatever reason, this offends you.

When I speak spanish(which is like 80% of the time) I always try to talk in an inclusive manner but sometimes is a struggle because a lot of people don't get it and because of the limitations of the language.

Great, great video! That's so true, all languages by Latin origins are such a big trouble for non binary people. My language and my culture are Italian and as a non binary person I'm not included or considered as "valid" in any way in my country, it's very hard. But I am optimistic, hoping something could change, specially in language one day🤞🏾💛💛

By the way, as Latin evolved into Romance before modern Latin based languages... if we look at the origins of Spanish, 'elle' was the masculine article. Then the -le dropped off and the 'll' assimilated to one, and the final -e was not salient and dropped.
I recommend a book titled: Latin Alive.
It is a very important video, but there is misunderstanding regarding language and how it works. Spanish uses gender (category or type [masculine and feminine]). Table is feminine and projector is masculine. English uses 'sex' (male and female). Big difference. People are taking an incomplete understanding of other languages, such as Spanish, based on the functions of English. English is not grammatically gendered, it is sexed.
omfg thank you!!!!!!! Most of these people don't seem to comprehend that sex and gender in spanish aren't correlated most of the time. It's only when we're describing the sex of a living being when it comes into play. Even then, there are many exceptions. For example: el pájaro, los pájaros describe both singular and plural birds regardless of their sex; same with la zarigüella, las zarigüellas. These people are trying to implement and modify words to a language they etymologically and structurally dont understand.

Your phrasing at (5:50 - 6:00) about how girls and women experiences are changed by the presence of masculinity - fascinates me because it makes me think of the "cis-woman" debate. Women who refuse to be called "cis" are being called TERFs but their argument is basically they believe that transwomen (who were initially men) are entering the female space and making them change their experiences of being a biological woman to fit needs of a trans woman.
Cis and trans are just descriptive terms though. Whether you’re hetero or homosexual depends on a few variables but it would be ridiculous to claim exclusion when the term is accurate and has no pejorative connotation
That one person does not understand what Latin-American means... It doesn't mean Latin in the USA. It means Latin in North and South America, instead of Latin from Europe...

Speaking spanish isn't what makes us Latinx, and I don't mind Ashley identifying as such! Not to mention we don't even know that she doesn't speak spanish. And when we reinforce that latinx = poc, we do a disservice to brown and afro-latinxs who face discrimination from white/white passing latinxs. Hey Karen no worries about the spanish, I’m just a bit confused, I never said she is not Latinx, I said her experiences as Latinx are filled with privilege (which she acknowledges) and therefore come of as kinda like awkward, i think? I validate an encourage her identity as Latinx, I believe everyone who identifies as Latinx are completely Latinx (Including people not born in Latin America, non-spanish speakers, not having a direct latin family member, etc). And also I am not the Latinx police, so my opinion on that doesn’t even matter because I don’t dictate anyone's experience and I am not debating her identity because it would be irrelevant, wrong and dumb tbh.
I was trying to highlight how identities and intersectionality come off as different (and maybe are different) in different spaces. And how it feels kinda awkward to compare her dialogue with the other people in this video. Just because her experiences (as understood) seem part of a different topic or space. I’ve heard this view of, for example, trans people who feel some sort of betrayal from passing trans people “que se cuelgan” de la identidad trans sin vivir las mismas experiencias of disproportionate rates of discrimination but using that language to identify themselves as trans. And how these people can damage the community by involuntarily silencing and taking space from the people who actually live through the trans experience, not just internally, but through interactions with society as non-passing trans people.
To put it simply, it is as if a non-binary cis-passing person wanted to speak on the trans experience among non-passing trans people. They could add to the conversation and the dialogue but their experiences would be way different and filled with more privilege than anyone in the room which feels kinda awkward. Which isn’t wrong btw, I just think maybe it's worth talking about.
Also, I might be completely wrong btw haha. And I acknowledge gender is different than culture, just comparing the identity part of it. cool. and also if it came of like i disliked this video I'm sorry, I really liked it.
I feel like this is a really important comment and I just wanted you to know that I feel the same way. I absolutely occupy a different space and have more privilege in the way I move through the world. Originally I didn't plan on being a part of the video at all, but it came down to the fact that my purpose in creating the video was both to shed light on a subject that affects many people very differently (even just being AFAB or AMAB experiences differ greatly), and to promote healing in a very particular place for me personally. For me, in this video, I needed to be able to do both. It's absolutely true that my experiences are different from the other folks in the video, in a way that is more salient then how their experiences may differ from each other, for example. I also think it is okay for those different conversations to take place in the same context. It's possible that I'm incorrect on that, and it's hard to determine when I'm so personally invested in the project and it has so much personal significance to me. I certainly didn't aim to occupy a space that isn't mine and if it came off that way I'm sorry.

Languages change often, and dramatically! English from only a few hundred years ago is not discernible to modern speakers. So language is changing without our attempts to impact it, and if it’s changing anyways it makes a lot of sense to work for intentional changes :)

This was very beautiful I'm very happy that latinx folks saw this. I'm white & non binary and it frustrates me to not see other types of repersentation other than white for envíes. When enbies come in all sorts of races and body sizes. So that's why I'm so happy that the latinx members in my enby community can see this and feel repersentive.
I have the same issue with language as a non-binary French-Canadian person (Québec). Our language is really gendered; we assigned a gender to everything. Having a gender neutral language to describe enby folx is almost impossible
Gabrielle Crovasce hello, im a canadian learning french at uni, and among our class we use "leur" and "iel" as the gender neutral pronouns, and the masculine endings, ex. alex est fort, iel a un chat. leur chat est gentil. this is only how we specifically tackle this, i dont know what other classes/groups do, but i hope this helps!

this is three years too late, but I'm wondering what people's opinion on the word "latinx" is.
for context, I'm nonbinary and white and I don't speak spanish. the term always seemed kinda weird to me since in most cases it's cis people shoving X's into random word and calling it "inclusive". the only context that makes sense imo in mx.
I've also seen a lot of spanish speaking people say that it makes no sense in the context of the language, and that "latine" would be a better gender-neutral option. but from this video, it seems that some people do seem to prefer the term "latinx."

I am learning Spanish and im non binary its very hard to get by using gender neutral terms in many languages and i don't know how i can do it without it hurting and giving dysphoria eventho i love languages
Ashley why do you use she/her pronouns if your non-binary? Do you go by them because its easier to manage socially since most people will instinctively call you she/her? Or are you simply pronoun indifferent? Do you use they/them pronouns in LGBTQ+ circles but she/her in regular daily life?
Pronouns are actually separate from gender identity! People can identify in a variety of ways and choose to use she/her and he/him pronouns as opposed to they/them or any other neo pronouns. For me, she/her pronouns are the most comfortable. And I reserve the right to re-evaluate that for myself whenever I want to or need to and to edit that as I see fit.
We are used to that pronoun, thats it.
