Well I just stumbled upon this video and enjoyed it. I have been an arborist since the 1980s. During my training we had a huge stump grinder-trailer that made a huge mess. And that stuff is hard to rake up! So I was glad to see this unit you were using, and the reduced debris pile.
And I was glad to hear conversation that reflects my feelings about heat & humidity. That is why I stay in the far West!!

I dug around some of my stumps with a backhoe attachment when I rented a stump grinder it seemed to make grinding them easier gave it a place for the chips to go and keep the teeth out of the dirt

The guys who own a stump grinder are always worried about wearing out the teeth on the grinder.i like to grind mostly wood at first. Before I get down to the dirt remove all the chips. Then grind the rest and leave. Too much wood left leaves the ground to soft and dry for grass.you will have to add some topsoil before seeding.

I bought one of those stump grinders a couple of years ago thinking it would be a good addition to my vermeer self propelled unit. Maybe more maneuverable and faster for some properties where the stumps are farther apart. I think if they used vermeer type carbide teeth I would have liked the 3pt grinder better. My area of upstate New York has a lot of stones and gravel and the cutting teeth kept breaking plus I was using a 60hp Kubota which was too much tractor. My vermeer stump grinder eats and breaks stones without issue. After I twisted the pto shaft off, I replaced the pto and put all new teeth on it and sold it. Probably if you don't hit any stones and don't use more than maybe a 25hp tractor you'll be fine. Works good for Christy!

Another very informative video. Thank you. I have noticed my machinest friends usually try to mill material with the blade cutting up I think. On the stump grinder, that would tend to drive the grinder frame down onto the feet instead of lifting against the 3 point. I'd be interested to see if that makes any difference...

I looked at 1025R and the 2038R and truthfully, I did like the 2038R better. It had a heavier frame and more stable and I just liked the overall performance better. Christy was good with the stump grinder.
To help see how much you are grinding on the stump I use a Stihl Backpack leaf blower it works great
Have the 1P24 (used the TTWT 5% discount!) on a JD 1025R and very pleased. Have ground some pretty large stumps with it. A TTWT video about maintaining the unit, especially the grinder teeth, would be great. How to tell when dull (is not that obvious), how to sharpen if practical, and how to replace. The teeth are $10 each, so information about the care and feeding would be very helpful. Love your videos - always my first stop for info. God Bless!

A thought... I wonder if a hydraulic top link (with an appropriate flow restrictor valve) would let you have more precise/easier adjustment of the grinder's working depth? Actually, I'd be really interested to see a full Top & Tilt kit (with double piloted check valves) on Johnny 2 to get your impressions on how useful it'd be with various 3PH implements (box blade, land plane, rear blade, post hole digger, etc.). You need to properly bribe the CFO to get a T&T approved. 😉
I agree, John Deere needs to set up a slight turn to the seat so you aren't straining to look behind when using 3 point attachments that you have to keep an eye on a lot. I feel there is enough room for a slight seat turn but don't know room wise if it will avoid the inside of the fender and levers.

Another Christi on video epic! You might also try grinding from right angles criscrossing the stump and its roots. It seems a few moments with a shovel or broom might expose any stump or roots needing cleanup passes. It seems some hand work around the stump may show where extra grinding will pay off. Some trees have big near surface roots which could use grinding even after the core stump is removed. Doing your own grinding means you can get more of the stump and roots ou. God bless you all

May I add a little earned advice. Ran conventional stump grinders for 20+ years. Start on one side of the stump on the downward rotation side of cutter wheel and work from one side to the other. Starting in the middle causes you to make a bowl shaped cut and has more drag and teeth engaged at once. Kinda needs to look like stairs
On the ‘downward’ side, eh? We had figured it would be best to cut ‘upwards’.
Tractor Time with Tim The bottom 1/4 of the leading edge of the blade seems to be more efficient and the back 1/4 disburses the chips. Haven’t ran one like that but with a swing head I always started about a foot before the stump to get the roots then worked my way into the stump. Can see it working a similar way with that one. Engaging half the wheel with any grinder is a lot of load.

I wonder if there will ever be a market for a virtual reality type of headset that would connect to cameras mounted on the tractor in various positions. It could also offer a view of the controls and the position of the operator's hands so that the operator could see their hands too. Just think, a 10,000 dollar tractor and a 5000 dollar VR headset and camera installation. Time will tell I suppose. It might also be possible to operate the tractor completely remotely (a 10,000 dollar tractor with 15,000 dollars worth of controls).
Just to add, I met Menno Baumann once, the then (and perhaps still) owner of Baumalight - as decent and nice a person as you would ever want to meet. Extremely smart too. He is a farmer first and foremost.

The rhetorical question I have is when does someone excavate the stumps and when does it serve one just to grind them below the surface like Christy showed us. Incidentally I look forward to the return to clearing around the tower with the remaining brush. One thing for certain if the stumps are pulled there would never be a bumpy ride, of course, then what do you do with stumps? Answer without burning them is move them to a spot with the grappler where even the cats do not go. Thanks Tim and Christy.

How would you feel about using This stump grinder on a 50-60 " tree stump, The stumps are Pine and Maple
Its all in the doing, once one does it themselves then they begin to see what will work more efficiently and then usually the Finance committee will open up the vault, good job Christy.
Tim got to be careful with those boom lifts they can turn into a catapult. Hopefully you have a good harness and lanyard when using the lift
I'm not advocating this due to safety issues but...I would stand on the right side of my Deere 955 and run this grinder while standing beside the tractor looking backwards and wearing my chainsaw helmet. I activate the pto by flipping the seat forward and lifting the pto switch located under the seat which Deere intended for live pto. Then apply hand pressure to the forward and reverse petal as needed and lift and lower as needed. In Georgia we take a pick and clean out rocks near the stump first and don't drive on your foot. I'm in steel toe boots. Don

Hard to work with heavy sod. Kill grass first, allow it to die, then not much sod to work with.
Tim & Christy, love your videos and i'm interested in the stump grinder. I have a question as to the depth you can grind. I have a 2720 and my i-match is 9" from ground level at the point where the attachment connects and that is with the arms in the lower adjustment holes. As a comparison would you know on your 2038R the i-match hight at the connection point and the depth you can grind a stump? Thank you and god bless.
You can grind plenty deep. I would say 6” easy. Probably more.
From my view behind the screen.......the pto shaft seems to be fairly straight ....... i would try for the heck of it and adjust the sway control so the grinder is all the way to your your right side might buy you an inch or 2 less neck fatique looking back over your shoulder.

Thats what i have to do with my snow blower on my 1010 mf..... the blower is 1in narrower then the wide turf tires total with and would keep packing down a strip on both sides till i set the blower over to grab a little over my right tire. Then i only pack snow my first pass on the left side. And i feel its easyier to see on my natural right side

I saw on JessieJamesHomestead's channel that he ran a 3320 with a 3P24 grinder. That one would be easier on the neck and you can position yourself like using the backhoe if you get the optional external control.
Got some good POV's. I was wondering, couldn't you mount a camera on the back of the tractor to monitor the three point accessories? Then Bluetooth to your phone?
We showed a camera for this attachment in earlier episode on 1025r. Results were marginal.

I bet you could use the drone to act as a rear view camera, could attach the controller to the steering wheel and stay positioned straight. But you didn't hear it from me, go ahead and upgrade to the bigger tractor to get that swivel seat ! I wonder how much discussion goes into manufacturers deciding which models get certain features in order to nudge you up to the next model.
Well I would really like to see on this is beside control where you stand behind it and hydraulics or even just something mechanical to move it front to back and side to side a little so you could just sit there and do it and leave the tractor part. I know that would check the price way up but it would be a lot easier. Lol. Or maybe just have it all grind from the front so you could just back over it and drop the whole thing all the way down and just slowly roll forward and just cut a trench in the ground through whatever is there.

What problems come up when your running to stones with the stump? I’m interested in this product but I have a lot of stones around here.
Small stones not much of a problem. Large rocks could break the teeth. The teeth are replaceable, and 6 extras are included.

The stump grinder that I have seen other than yours is Woodland Mills from Canada. I wander if a backup camera would work so you wouldn't have to turn around to stump grind.

Just picked up a real nice used 1P24. It was missing the plastic debris chute that bolts on to the grinder. I contacted the company and they want $180 for that plastic shield. I don’t think so. I’ll make one out of scrap sheet metal for less then $5.
There is no plastic debris chute that I know of. There is a black steel shield on the right side.
Did you guys totally loose Casey? That grinder seems to work well. How about using backhoe to dig out stumps or would it make it harder to get rid of them?

Since I have the L-2501 it does not look like it has the Horse Power for the 3P24 on the 3Point Boom or will it work on the L-2501?
How sensitive is the 1P24 when it is spinning in the dirt?

I ask because some of or properties has so many surface roots for the Oak trees and I might try using it to skim a few inches deep to cut those roots like making ing a shallow trench with it

Why did you choose the Baumalight on the tractor rather than using the stump grinder on Vinny? Seems like it is easier to sit on Vinny facing forward without moving the tractor back and forth repeatedly.

I see you are using a imatch quick hitch with the 1P24 on a 2038R. I have a couple of questions regarding this setup. Did you have to shorten the drive shaft of the 1P24 so it wouldn't wouldn't bottom out or was the length okay to use on the 2038R?
My second question is related to the imatch quick hitch. Did you have to put on any bushings to make the 1P24 compatible with the imatch or were the pins the correct diameter?

I find the 2038r and 1025r to require the exact same length shaft.

No. I would not recommend on a gear drive.

Good question. We see no visible wear on the Ventrac power rake we have had for 2+ years.

That grinder definitely seems to work better on the 2038R. It seems though like it would be nearly impossible to use without a second person telling you how to position the grinder wheel as it is completely hidden from the tractor operator.
Disagree. I thought we showed a good view from the driver’s seat. The visibility is fine.
@@TractorTimewithTim I saw that. But that seemed to be from Christi's viewpoint. Being short, her head isn't that high above the seat and I can see where she has a clear view. But for a taller person its seems you would be looking right through the center of the quick hitch and stump grinder frame. These of course are all assumptions on my part. Did you operate the grinder yourself and could you see the blade from your viewpoint?

I know that the 1P24 comes with 6 extra teeth. But you could go through them with some heavy use. I went to the web site shopgreendealer.com and I didn't see anywhere that they carry replacement teeth. Where do you buy them? I'm seriously considering getting one of these. We own 34 acres of heavily wooded area. I just cut a path for the driveway and I need to get rid of the stumps. I just want to make sure that I have plenty of extra teeth on hand so I can keep going.

I watched a video for the Woodland Mills WG24 stump grinder and it was showing the proper procedure on how to replace the teeth along with torque specs and the tools that are required. I looked for one similar for the 1P24 and I could not find one nor could I find a manual online that explains this. Just a thought.

🚫China. Looks much smoother either because on the weight of the 2038R &/or tightening of the lift arms as noted on both accounts. Either way I like this grinder much better than before. Really like the canopy/fan. I'd love a cab but could see it getting in the way too often.
The only thing that is dumb with that stump grinder is that it can only cut in one direction. They should have made it so it would cut in both directions. It would make it faster to be able to cut in both directions. What would be even better would be a rear facing camera and monitor so you wouldn't have to turn around to see as much. They should have some sort of device that helps to remove the debris from what your gutting like a screw or even a high powered fan to blow it away.
There is a ‘flex’ mechanism which allows it to flex backward. Allowing cutting backward would disable that feature
