When they said to "swirl" the sugar it means to literally swirl it in the pan instead of stirring it. When you stir it, it creates a nucleation point for crystals to begin forming. That's why that disc of sugar crystals formed on top. I'm glad you were able to save it and the end product looked great!

@_bebeboudeur_ when you stir you put the utensil in the mixture and move it around. Swirling is picking up the pot and moving the mixture around by tilting it in a circular motion. It's hard to e plain, but hopefully that helps!

Love your videos! Little baking tip - you need a LOT more oil for frying donuts! That's why they got so dark before they were cooked in the middle (also probs needed a lower temp). It seems wasteful/excessive, but if the donuts don't have enough oil to float with at least a couple of inches between them and the bottom of the pan, you will overcook the outside and have raw inside. You can always put the oil into an empty container to reuse for another time/something else. Hope that helps for next time! But....I'm SUPER impressed at your first attempt at caramel and custard! Not easy to do and they both looked great!

Oh wow I never knew that was what the top was made of !! It reminds me of gingerbread houses bc in finland we build gingerbread houses with melted sugar bc it gets so hard and sturdy 😂✌️ Those looked amazing though and you're kinda making me wanna make some now

The way you say 'milk' is actually the way we say, pronounce and spell milk in Afrikaans, like 'melk' and I love it 😂 just makes you so much more relatable to your South African audience 😊

A tip for making caramel. Stir gently just until the sugar melts into the water. Then do not stir anymore. Take the pan and swirl it around the pan, but don’t stir. I also keep a cup of water and pastry brush nearby to wipe down the sides of the pan if I start to see crystallization.

Seeing Mia’s videos with her mom (do we even know her name other than mama maples?!?!) always reminds me of how much I have missed out on with my mom. I forgive her but as an adult I could never have this relationship because of the mistrust and trauma from the past. As an adult it would feel really good. But I guess when they teach you as a child that you can’t rely on them and they aren’t safe then you certainly won’t need them as an adult.

Looooved this series idea!! You can always make a Bienenstich, or beesting. It is also a custardy dessert but oh my goodness, so so so yummy! You have to try it if you haven't yet 🎉❤
