When they said to "swirl" the sugar it means to literally swirl it in the pan instead of stirring it. When you stir it, it creates a nucleation point for crystals to begin forming. That's why that disc of sugar crystals formed on top. I'm glad you were able to save it and the end product looked great!
@_bebeboudeur_ when you stir you put the utensil in the mixture and move it around. Swirling is picking up the pot and moving the mixture around by tilting it in a circular motion. It's hard to e plain, but hopefully that helps!
I know but I've always known starch aka corn FLOUR as a thickening for gravy and sauces lol. So I find it funny that mama maples says there's no flour in it so how will it thicken 😅😂😂

For future reference if you want to make sure your doughnuts aren’t doughy on the inside try frying them at a lower temperature for a longer amount of time the outside won’t burn as fast and the inside cooks evenly! 😊
for future reference the reason you mix the milk, sugar and yeast is so you can activate the yeast :D also corn starch is the thickening agent in the custard
@@pcbassoon3892 since she used oat milk I’m not sure. Regular milk should be warm or room temp though. Maybe since it’s oat it fed the yeast better or maybe it was actually room temp since it was sitting out for a bit
I’ve never had to add cornstarch to custard. The eggs do the job. I was worried that she didn’t pour the finished custard through a mesh strainer to get out any micro lumps. Glad it still turned out well!
I almost had a HEART ATTACK when she had the scalding melted sugar pan with the handle haging over the edge of the counter and started doing gymnastics!!!!😮😮 I am so glad she didn't bump the handle and have hot syrup fly onto her!!!😭💛 She did an amazing job on the donuts!

Oh yes! My sister makes a gorgeous no-knead sourdough recipe and doesn't even buy bread anymore! And Mia can make simple butter with heavy cream and finished with flaky salt. It's very easy to make.

I love watching these videos because i was abused by my mom,and part of the abuse was at its peak when i would want to make myself food,she would be screaming,hitting me,cursing me,and taking charge not allowing me to do anything,im 26 and i get panic attacks when i try to make food in the kitchen.watching this video helps me see what a healthy mother-daughter relationship is like,and that making stains on a counter isnt going to kill nobody,and doesnt mean you should yell at someone or hit them or forbid them from making food because they stained something. These kinds of videos make me very happy and shift the way i look at making food,kind of wiring my brain to associate making food with something positive,so yay❤ you two are lovely❤
Love your videos! Little baking tip - you need a LOT more oil for frying donuts! That's why they got so dark before they were cooked in the middle (also probs needed a lower temp). It seems wasteful/excessive, but if the donuts don't have enough oil to float with at least a couple of inches between them and the bottom of the pan, you will overcook the outside and have raw inside. You can always put the oil into an empty container to reuse for another time/something else. Hope that helps for next time! But....I'm SUPER impressed at your first attempt at caramel and custard! Not easy to do and they both looked great!

Hey, baker here! I’m guessing your yeast didn’t get foamy because you used cold milk. It needs to be warm to activate the little yeasties! And the custard thickens because of the cornstarch being cooked (and a little because of the eggs) Great job overall though! Super proud of you 😁

When was about 11 I tried to make Dad's fave lemon meringue pie for his birthday. I'd been baking for a few years but'd never tried a meringue pie. The crust and meringue were perfect but the lemon filling didn't thicken up. Arghhh! I let Dad cut the "perfect" pie and he had lemon soup. He loved it and ate a good share but I was a heartbroken perfectionist.
So you use warm milk with yeast and the yeast feeds on sugar and the mixture gets all bubbly, that’s how you know the yeast is actually active/ working and not old/dead. Loving this video, so fun, Mia!😂❤❤
Whenever I get stains on my white counter or sink, I use Soft Scrub and leave for 2-3 mins before I scrub the stain. It works like a charm, there hasn’t been a stain I couldn’t remove with soft scrub yet. Hope this helps :)
Watching mia make the custard reminded me of my first time making custard but from a powder. I made it for my grandma and she was complimenting me and eventually asked for the recipe, so I had to very solemnly bring out the tin of powder. Her smile didn't falter but I KNEW

A tip for making caramel. Stir gently just until the sugar melts into the water. Then do not stir anymore. Take the pan and swirl it around the pan, but don’t stir. I also keep a cup of water and pastry brush nearby to wipe down the sides of the pan if I start to see crystallization.
Seeing Mia’s videos with her mom (do we even know her name other than mama maples?!?!) always reminds me of how much I have missed out on with my mom. I forgive her but as an adult I could never have this relationship because of the mistrust and trauma from the past. As an adult it would feel really good. But I guess when they teach you as a child that you can’t rely on them and they aren’t safe then you certainly won’t need them as an adult.

I found out you have to bake them at low heat (100-120°C) for about 3 hours. When I did that, they came out perfect

A tip for making caramel. Stir gently just until the sugar melts into the water. Then do not stir anymore. Take the pan and swirl it around the pan, but don’t stir. I also keep a cup of water and pastry brush nearby to wipe down the sides of the pan if I start to see crystallization.

Seeing Mia’s videos with her mom (do we even know her name other than mama maples?!?!) always reminds me of how much I have missed out on with my mom. I forgive her but as an adult I could never have this relationship because of the mistrust and trauma from the past. As an adult it would feel really good. But I guess when they teach you as a child that you can’t rely on them and they aren’t safe then you certainly won’t need them as an adult.
