Very nice finds, Lou! Especially the "Newporter" morphs. Having striped, banded and mixed patterns found in the same species in one geographical area is pretty unique.
Enjoyed this one and the Kings! Hey... got me thinking about how you got into herping... how you became a pilot... a whole background story might make for an interesting video! Cheers!
Love your videos man! I live in Socal as well, but everytime I herp I never find any under my boards. It's unfortunate but I'm still hoping to find some soon. Also, what's the app on your phone that helps you find boards? I'd love to check that out! Love your content man!!
Thanks so much! Timing is everything. Usually best to flip late Feb to early April. Summer doesn't work at all. I just use Google maps and plan ahead of time. Thanks again! Lou B
Great video. Love those striped kings and the gopher. I road cruised a killer speck the other night. Probably my video after the next one. Great seeing new content from you❤!!!!
Thanks Todd! It won't get the views the shorts seem to get, but this is where my passion lies. Telling a story. I saw that speck!! Killer is right! Lou B
Lovely king snake Lou and nice gopher snake too. What an amazing day of king snakes and they're variations in colour. What does New porter stand for, excuse my ignorance.
Newport is an area. Newport Beach. Somehow that became the name for those snakes. They are found there, and surrounding areas. But it's a relatively small region compared to the California Kingsnake population. Lou B
What a productive day of flipping! So many great looking kings, Lou! Those thistle plants are the worst, thanks for suffering to show us some cool snakes 😜
Whenever I get the herping blues, or lack of herping blues a Loub video always cures them! It’s not raining men, it’s raining king snakes! Another excellent video, the scorpions 🦂 were cool too! Great video Lou!
@@loub747 Hey your LouB you’ll find more snakes soon! Alls well for the most part hear, other than the other night I hit a deer on my way home from work.
That's cool to find both banded and striped. I've only been lucky enough to find them further north where there's only banded. But who know, maybe I'll get lucky later this year.
Awesome video, such a breath of fresh air to see you in your adventures. Speaking of guides, I've always wondered if you would be down to produce a simple guide to getting into herping. I'd love to get into it where I live but I have no idea about ideal times of day, weather, soils, or even spots with boards that I could search. I guide from an experienced herper like you would be awesome.
I'm not sure where you live, but a herper that lives by me said the best way to start is by using the inaturalist app to find spots. I've been doing it for a month, and it's helped me exponentially. If you're flipping, you want to make sure the soil is not super wet under the board. Best weather is like the 70s and partly cloudy for flipping. For cruising at night, I've found when its in the 80s to high 70s I find a lot of snakes on the crawl. I'm still fairly new to it, but these have been the most helpful tactics for me so far.
We might have to start calling you King Louie after this video. 👑 Or, we might accidentally run you over next time we see you for finding all the cool stuff without us 😆 Good stuff Lou. Let us know when youll be in the Chicago area again.
@@loub747 If you do Florida, let us know the date. We are trying to plan something in Florida as well. If it works out, we can meet you. Do you typically fly into south Florida? If we did the Everglades, Miami would obviously be best.
That's definitely the state of Texas imprinted on the head of that cool striped California King, Lou!! Now I have to wonder if our Texas Kings have the state of California spots on their heads??!! lol. Too bad you didn't have your waterboarding son there to assist with the filming!! Jim C.
Thanks so much. I try not to reveal too much. Of course if you know, you know! I always respect the places I go. Maybe see you in the field someday. Lou B
Now thats what I call a productive day! What was that 6 king snakes? I bet if someone told you before you went out that you would find 6 king snakes you would have doubted them. And every phase of cali king at that. On a somewhat different note… I would love to see you put out another one of those snake id quiz video you done a while back. That video was awesome. I know it took you ages to edit it but it was brilliant.
Yay 😀 San Diego my home town❤ gopher snakes and king snakes. My first pet snake was a gopher snake. I once had a king snake and she laid eggs. When the babies hatched out both banded and striped. These days the captive bred California king snakes come in so many varieties you cannot recognize the species sometimes. Seeing all these varieties in the wild you can see how easy it is to get designer morphs. Those new porters are crazy pretty.❤❤❤
Actually I like the banded Californian kingsnakes more. They have this familiar and classical look on them and create this flickering effect when they are moving. Te striped morph doesn’t look so kingsnake-like, but they are still interesting and with the same contrast. I remember them from captivity and they seemed to me larger and more bitey, although this could just have been individual variation. I thought that their pattern difference is just one gene substitution, I didn’t know that intermediate forms could exist.
CAPTAIN LOU LIVING THE DREAM 🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆. That’s THE MOST KING SNAKES IN ONE AFTERNOON OF HERPING IVE EVER SEEN… LOVE THE FERRARI 🏆🏆🏆
I’m sure doing my best! Lou B
Lou, Great trip! amazing Cal Kings!
Thanks. Got a bit lucky on this trip! Lou B

Thanks Ryan. Looking forward to meeting up with you in the field sometime soon. Lou B

That’s a pretty lucky day of finding snakes. I saw you on airline videos live a few weeks ago, that was pretty cool!
Thanks so much. I’ll try and do another video with those guys soon. Thanks again, Lou B

Yeah, had fun on this day Scott, minus those thistles. Hope alls well my friend.
Am I the only one who can't find kings???
I’ve been in those funks before. Next thing you know it’s only kings you’re finding! Lou B
Thanks Lou, I have not been to that spot since the late 80's 88-89ish - good finds 🤙

Great videos I had no idea how many species were in so-cal. I have a tag line for you, come for the planes stay for the snakes, lol. Feel free to use.

Yeah, San Diego county is the place to go for striped. Good luck! Lou B
6:25 king almost looks purple!!!!😮
Great video! It’s crazy how different the kings are from ours out east. Love the variability in patterns!
Yeah, it has a bit of lavender feel to it. Yeah, we have a mix out west, but only in a small area it seems. Can't wait to see an east coast one! Lou B

10:00 those square checks are amazing. Really when you think of it, something that is very rare in the natural world.
Yeah, didn't really think about that at the time. Cool looking for sure. Lou B
looks like it's wrapped with gift paper, and the line is where the two sides meet. Would be cool to see the stripes develop from embryo.
