Ive done some more looking into it, and they call the transmission the 4 Advanced transmission and refer to 4A both as 4-Auto and 4-Advanced depending on who wrote the copy. So... it's safe to call it either or.
@@drivingsports Thanks for taking the time to look into it. Goes to show the dedication to this production. I believe 4A was always referred to as “4 auto”with the F150 and Ford may have switched over to “4 automatic” with the Bronco, Maverick, and Ranger. There was some confusion amongst F150 owners initially because 4 auto was the also the name of Fords technology in the early 2000s that would automatically engage the front driveshaft. As you know, the modern system is actually AWD and much better for all intents and purposes, so maybe Ford changed the nomenclature to get away from that connotation.
Great Video. It's too bad out of all those trucks you named that Toyota Tacoma TRD is the only one that offers a manual transmission. For that reason Toyota would be my pick.
Really showed your ignorance of driving off-road. For a start, no mention of reducing tyre pressures to suit the terrain. I suspect you left the pressures at a level used for sealed roads and did not lower them to suit dirt, gravel and inclines. Secondly, the 4A is four wheel drive AUTOMATIC, not advanced. Why you decided to call it that, I can only speculate. Automatic mode is designed for running 4x4 on sealed and hard surfaces, ie, bitumen roads where the automatic function can allow slip to counteract driveline wind-up, but still allow drive and traction to front and rear when required ie, wet, icy or muddy conditions, Automatically. It was never intended for serious terrain where front and rear drive should be locked together.
Ford calls that particular transmission the 4 Advanced system... they interchangeably call 4A auto or advanced depending on who wrote the copy. We talk about airing down A LOT on this channel. However, on our own test courses we don't air down for consistant testing. Finally, when I said not to use 4A i was specifically regarding the context of this video which is off-road use. I should have been clearer about that. That was a mistake on my part. Though, it is something I've talked about the value and use of automatic 4WD systems in many other videos.
Been contemplating TRD Pro vs Raptor and you've convinced me to get the Raptor. Better price and better build.

I really don't want to spend 57k on a new vehicle. Like I could buy a cheaper car and a 20k used rubicon for wheeling. But I am so drawn to buying one of these.
Can a Ranger Raptor __wear__ 35" tires? if not, what mods would be needed?
I've seen Ranger Raptors with them after a mild lift. No idea if they rub though.
60k? 😂
Now do a regular cab F-150 with 4x4. They are 1000 lbs lighter.
Trail turn assist is on f150 raptor and tremor
It's been a while and I forgot about those (and haven't driven the Tremor yet.)
@@drivingsports also it is on ranger raptor in other countries and should be on ours as it was in the manual that it was there
4wd high is not made for high load situations, like off road. The clutch pack is made to slip. Its so misleading. This will scrap your transfer case clutches.
I mean he complimented that the RR's drive modes are intrusive, I think he's just a tool lol
4auto or 4advanced?
Ford interchanges the reference. I think now it should be 4Auto with the 4advance transmission. But they call the mode both things on their communications.
@ interesting! Both actually make sense. Let me know when you’re ready to move on from the RR you’ve got! I’m in Portland but willing to drive up to the Seattle area. Your reviews have me sold!
the frontier also has a v6.. sigh.. i take back my previous comment
Lol. I then mention it again at the end, however.
@@drivingsports fair point. i take back my take back 🤣 - credit where its due.. my '23 pro4x is very capable but its also cheaper than these more capable options. its just nice to see it get some love.. a lot of reviews literally ignore it and just compare to the taco
Frontier w 33's
Why did you describe it as "cheating" with getting by that ditch? The point is to get by it, right? You got by it.
Will it tow? 😂
F150 raptor has turn assist
Just purchased one myself, awesome truck. The Toyota is cheap feeling and has a gutless motor, even with the hybrid system.
Ford Canada screwed us north of the border. Over 80k here. Compared to others this is expensive
A basic TRD pro in Canada is 80k.
Everyone is screwing us.....not just Ford😂
You need to test a RAM power wagon on this course. RR is the same price as the Tacoma TRD pro in Canada. Ford will up the price very soon.
The Ranger owner's manual talks about trail control on page 238. Doesn't the Raptor have it, or is the Raptors trail control different than other versions?
We tested Trail Control in the video. Turn control is the missing feature.
Sorry, I meant trail turn assist on page 238.
@@drivingsports Sorry, I meant trail turn assist on page 238
@@kvgrow are you talking about the F150 raptor or the Ranger raptor?
@@drivingsports I'm talking about the Ranger Raptor. Check out the owner's manual and tell me what you think.
A bargain 😂😂😂😂😂😂
This is as big as a older F100 Ford Truck
The MPG is terrible.
If you are thinking about selling it, let me know.
raptor>tacoma trd pro
From cell phones to trucks. RUclipsrs have coined the phrase "long term review" to mean absolutely nothing to real people.
I bet it’s a great day being on a trail behind a modern truck, while its owner is constantly holding everyone up while figuring out what “mode” they want to be in.
ZR2 Bison for me all day, every day.
Was seriously looking at getting one of these, the problem is both my local dealers are asking 90k....
Yikes! Go interstate and drive it back.
Found mine in Iowa at MSRP and drove it home. I hated to put 1200 miles on it the first day, but worth it to have the truck.
You do know that you’re not forced to buy from a local dealer, right? You can easily get these at sticker if you travel just a bit…
@@steinb6271 Yea of course I understand that. I’ve bought a few cars out of state, but it doesn’t change the fact that it’s frustrating! It cost to travel too.
Two Ford dealers within 45 miles of me that are selling for MSRP. I just got one from Garff Ford in Greeley CO. I dealt with Ray Vigil who was great to work with.
It sounds like a weed eater
4A stands for 4 auto, not 4 advanced.
Ford calls it 4-Advanced. They're very specific about this.
@@drivingsports Wells shows you what I know. Didn’t realize they changed the nomenclature when the technology transferred over from F150s.
But you can only get a manual with the slower motor on the Toyota.
Thank you for turning off trail mode otherwise it would be a 2 hour "rock crawl" video 🫣
