The director's commentary francis does over the movies should not be missed. The best I've ever heard. He explains everything and shares a lot of his personal feelings.
Coda is the new definitive cut of Godfather 3..its what Coppola says 3 should have originally been. I'll be watching my set this weekend great vid Ken!!
Godfather 2 will grow on you just like the first one did. Both these movies get better on every watch. So much emotional depth it’s impossible to take in in one sitting.
I ended up getting the super expensive collectors edition set and it is HUGE!! I rarely go for the most premium set but The Godfather deserves it lol. Thanks for the reviews Ken. It is always welcome!!
I personally think that the third Godfather film is criminally underrated. I understand that there are a couple of characters that have a weird relationship in the film, but it’s such a small part of an overall fantastic story. Maybe it’s because I had low expectations when I first saw it, but it’s definitely worth watching in my opinion.
That godfather deluxe set with the art inside... It is well worth the money 💯💯 and a great investment. They really went the extra mile and made one epic collection!! You got to have the lights off to get the best effect in regards to the 4k💯
1&2 are almost inseparable to me but if had to pick... 2 slightly over 1 is my preference. Can't wait to watch them all in 4K, haven't had chance yet but did get it this week, and watch the Coda version of 3 for first time (which I actually like 3). Also props for the Animaniacs reference.
A historical note (from a guy old enough to remember seeing Part II in the theatre): Brando was supposed to be in the flashback scene with James Caan in Part II. However, he was involved in some sort of dispute with Paramount and was a no-show when they went to shoot that scene. Thus, the flashback was rewritten with Vito's character only appearing off-camera. Also, I have heard that one of the classic lines in the first one ("Leave the gun. Take the cannoli.") was improvised. By the way, the actor who played cannoli-loving Clemenza in the first one (Richard S. Castellano) also didn't appear in the sequel. He was apparently in a dispute with Coppola. His part was rewritten and was replaced with the Frank Pentangeli character.
Managed to watch the first one on a limited release in the theatre few weeks ago, definitely a good one to watch on a big screen, first time i watched it wss on laser disc many years ago. Will be getting this set soon. Great review.
Godfather 2 will take a few viewings to really get you more into it and realize and process all that happens. You'll go back and forth between which one is better.
I absolutely love the artwork for The Godfather 1 & 2 I picked up the single releases of the blu ray just to have all 3 with the art work I prefer that to the box set still don't have 4K haven't upgraded.
"ML, you come here today, when my daughter is celebrating her first viewing of this new film trilogy release, and have the nerve to say that you did not view the G3 coda? Knowing that it was the black sheep of this family, and the coda would have given it the chance to finally redeem itself, you still denied it that chance. Family comes first, yet you did not lift even one finger to redeem its place in this family! So watch the coda, and then report back to us the joy that you have experienced from it - otherwise you will get an offer that, well... you know."
Please do the CODA review in the coming weeks while the originals are still fresh in your mind. Then you can do the review again in a few years too. It's rare that a director gets to go back to a movie and the studio allows him to save it.
The Godfather Part II is less emotionally visceral. But it's still brilliant. It's like a cinematographers went dream. The first Godfather is like the film storytellers wet dream.
I have not alot of new releases for March. But hit up every sale. So have alot to show on the roundtable Monday. That haven't even shown on my channel yet.
This film has been, hands down, my top all-time favorite film -- one I've seen probably once at least every five years for the past 50 years, and I saw it in its original release (which I STILL vividly remember). I can honestly say I don't recall the film ever looking this good, EVER!! The colors and the detail just pop! I think I've become so used to seeing the "brassy gold" tone the film has, so I was blown away by the restoration. Godfather II doesn't have the color pop, but it still looks way better than it ever has. I have to agree that as much effort that was made in this iconic film that should be treated lovingly, the packaging is shite. I've double-triple-quadruple dipped so many times, and I bought the deluxe version of this release, and I wish it were justified, but hey, it's The Godfather, for goodness sake!!! Just an FYI, Godfather Part III is, undeniably, garbage and was treated as such for such a long time. After the first and second one, it was a tragedy to come back after all these years, only to be met with this. So disappointing. So, to that end Copolla went back in two years ago and re-cut the third one, thank god! I would suggest trying to power through the third part, and then go back and watch "Coda" so you can see the difference and appreciate it so much more. And finally, yes, there are many who see Pt II as better than the first. On the first viewing (back in the theaters in 1974) it was hard to follow the back and forth, but on second and multiple watches since it becomes much clearer. Not better for me, just clearer and richer for the overall story arch. Glad you enjoyed it!
First, thank you for explaining “Mid Level Media.” Second, it’s been a long time since I read it, but I believe Mario Puzo’s “The Godfather” novel encompasses the content of both “The Godfather” and “The Godfather II,” so the two films are best experienced as a whole. I am a big fan of impressions and impressionists, but I think it does a disservice to DeNiro’s performance to describe it as an impersonation of Brando. Simply, DeNiro embodies the character of young Vito, just as Brando embodies the character of the older Vito. My copy of “The Godfather” 4K is scheduled to arrive on Monday (until then, my copies of “Dr Strangelove” and Albert Brook’s “Modern Romance,” arriving today, will keep me occupied).
I agree Gary. I did say that DeNiro was more then an impression of Brando's performance. I Said he did a good job of not feeling like that and making it his own. Thank you for watching and I've been thinking about part 2 a lot. It's definitely growing on me.
I just finished viewing "Godfather" and "Godfather II" on 4K, and I am going to amend my original comments to you about the two films being best experienced as one. "The Godfather" is a remarkable piece of filmmaking and story telling, and stands on its own. There is nothing extraneous in this film, whereas "The Godfather II" feels bloated with a need to expand on the characters' stories, but, for my money, the original film is what great films are all about (Michael's arc!). Just incredible! Also, I re-watched "The Searchers" recently and gained a greater appreciation for that film. Can't wait for "The Untouchables" and if you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend "Lillies of the Field." Cheers :)
Great review. The original Godfather goes back and forth with Citizen Kane for top film of all time on AFIs list. Would love a review of Coda. Haven’t seen it yet, however did see the theatrical cut of Godfather 3 in the theater lol.
I would like to purchase... THE GODFATHER SAGA (1977) on 4K UHD running at 434 minutes with over sixty additional minutes to flesh out the story even more.
Ken I highly recommend the godfather the complete epic. It's an extended chronological version of the first two. It only available for VHS and hd on HBO when it airs on TV
I know these will be released again, probably multiple times so I'm waiting for better packaging and the films being released in individual 4K cases and/or steelbooks.
I could live with the flimsy cover IF it didn't have the open space in the crease of the spine. I liked Godfather a lot. Now watching part 2 for the 1st time.
Great review and godfather part 2 is my favorite of the trilogy and yeah I definitely would love for you to do a stand alone review for The Godfather part 3 director’s cut
They could have done better on the packaging. The price was outrageous for this packaging. Smh. This is a crap job for a classic series. Good to hear the transfer is great.
My favorite movie of all time, I was very disappointed with Coda, because since I have seen the original third one so many times because I love it, it’s not the same, for me the original part III is better for me. I got the black box version.
This set is disappointing. Part 3 both the 1991 extended cut, originally released as the final director’s cut, and the theatrical cut both only have a new 5.1 and not the Dolby original stereo surround audio as was in theaters or the the original tape/laserdiscs. It’s disappointed for that and hurts paying so much when this is the first time you can own the theatrical cut. The new part 3 cut is fine and just streamlined the narrative I think the 1991 cut is fine and the theatrical is just as fine. People just slammed it since it came out 20 years later and the hype was to much to live up to. The original isn’t a perfect film and has obvious narrative flaws but is a captivating phenomenal film which is why it’s stood the test of time but it is kind sloppy especially the beginning act. Part 2 is flawless classic can’t find a inch of pain on that
there was a version of The Godfather for TV, called The Godfather Epic, that was done in chronological order. it's fantastic. always wanted to get that on a disc. rewatch 1 and 2 often. you'll learn and see more every time.
THE GODFATHER SAGA needs to be on 4K UHD now the restorations have been done. It's length is 434 minutes in chronological order with more than sixty more minutes added to the story.
The first DVD had a paper in it on how u can do it on the Internet so you can watch it in different ways lol, then somehow u edited out so u can open it without the paper in it so it won't fall out lol. Like if you need it to look clean.
The flashbacks are all about juxtaposition. Showing the difference between Vito and his integrity and how he is all about family, vs Michael who becomes soulless and loses his family because of his moral degradation. Copolla hated that people still liked Michael at the end of the first film so he leaned heavily into how evil he became.

Terminator is not in the same league as Godfather.

Yes!
The bonus disc is the original part III. Coda is the new version.
