During the early 70’s I worked as a detail drafter at the Big C in Illinois. Worked for the 988B section. I had no idea how lucky I was to have this opportunity. I was paid the same wages as the guys in my section. This huge wheel loader was only eclipsed by the 992 also built in Aurora. Thanks for showing me how resilient this machine is in 2021. As a 71 year old grandma I am thrilled to see the 988B still in action.

I worked as a sub contractor in a lime stone quarry, we had a 988B 50W serial number, we kept on hand to build haul roads. At one point, the quarry had bought three new 988F's and all had transmission issues, and they would borrow our B model during repairs. One time, their operator returned our machine and said " I have to downshift into first gear to climb that hill, this thing went right up it in third." She was a beast. We never had to remove the cab to haul ours, we hauled it on a rail, maybe they used a low-boy.

Just a quick observation Andrew and very important: This tapered style pins with conical bushings at their end for the 988B and 992C, need to be press fitted with a 50 TON force hydraulic press prior to installing the center bolts. This is for pressing and locking the cones good against the pins and the machinined holes. And all should be very clean and without any grease or oil on them. If you only tighten them with the center bolts, they will get loose and damage the pins, bushings and the machined surfaces. Also the center bolts need to be torqued with a reduction torque multipier to CAT specs.Very important on this big loaders as they develop a very big stress on all the pivot joints. This is applicable to all pivot points of the loader linkage. Also, on the lower pins that attach to the bucket, if you installed new pins, they should be filled with oil through the holes provided on the edges of the pins, removing the plugs and installing a special lubrication fitting. These bottom pins are the only oil lubricated and maintenance free. All the rest of the linkage have grease fittings.

I watch your videos, and are great. I am from England, . From the 60s, we had a Sand and gravel Quarry, then a limestone quarry. We lived in NW England, manufactured concrete bricks, from which Lancaster University was mostly build. Seeing you get a loader brought back memories as we had Michigan ones. Back then, each scoop was 12 tons (UK). No idea who built the excavators, but as a kid, helped dad service and repair them as you do with yours. I used to have to work harder than his employees, as I bet you had you with yous, so no privilege and I was at school with most on the children of his employees. Since then, I have had many careers, using engineering, computing, diving and IT and communications. I miss all, but know I work for my Government and though poor pay, it is beneficial to many people. Poor pay, but great colleagues and managers and little stress as close to retirement age. I cannot see myself retiring or being made redundant. Nor wealthy LOL, but I love it.
Really glad you have found your vocation at a young age and are prosperous.

All the smoke from fixing/running/painting the machinery in his castle goes straight up to his living quarters. He and his dogs get pretty dirty. Its not as pristine as you think. The dogs jump into the front seats of his vehicles all the time with dirty feet. Ive never seen him soap them down so their dirt stays outside. Lots of long hours of dedication. It takes a good operator to run a 988 without spinning the wheels. It looked like the guy running was having difficulty at first. You have to crowd the bucket as soon as you hit the pile to create downforce on the tires so they don't spin. It was pretty muddy, so that may have something to do with it. Also, the wheel loader with a steering wheel and transmission neutralizer pedal is a little harder to load than the newer ones that have a variable torque converter that lets you vary the wheel torque from 100% down to 25% with the left pedal, while providing more hydraulic power to the boom and bucket. Also, with the 988F, the steering wheel changed to a Stic steer on the left arm rest with pushbutton gearshift on the Stick control. But a ton of work can be done with this wheel loader.
I can't wait to see what Andrew buys next. Its so fun.

It had 2 monel tanks that were totally loaded up,with algae/crud, usually when I got into some serious wakes in the inlet near the lighthouse was when I got into trouble. I can't begin to tell you what tell you what I did with them after I got them out of the boat, but they still managed to load up (2) huge inline filters in any rough surf. I finally found a truck repair place over by Great Adventure in the pines. They cut the ends out of the round tanks and did what they had to do and sealed them back up. I replaced the fuel lines and filters for the last time on that project. Good to see that you are back rocking it!beginbegin

I love watching Andrews videos, I have been a heavy equipment operator for 45 years and I can still learn something from him.
