- Long time no see folks. Happy new year.
One day, while browsing the official website of Tokyo's Minato Ward, I found that they publish their old photos taken in Minato Ward which are copyright-free.
I was immediately fascinated by those old photos. And I thought it would be interesting to make a video of actually going to the places where those photos were taken and taking photos in 2022 to compare. Like before and after.
In Chapter 2, I went on a journey to see the now of the places where photos of Tokyo were taken in 1970 by a mysterious foreigner.
It was like time travel for me and I really enjoyed it. I hope you all enjoy it too.
This was the toughest edit work I have done. So see you again in 2024...
Minato Ward old photos: opendata.city....
Tokyo in 1970: commons.wikime...
I have also made some of my photos copyright-free and published (the other photos I took have the faces of passersby, so I have not yet decided what to do with them).

Latitude and longitude of each spot (copy&paste on Google Maps to get the exact locations)

It occurred to me as I was writing this that it's a bit crazy that "half a century ago" is the 70s...

Speaking of nostalgia, anyone else nostalgic for the old opening music?
I feel nostalgia almost for everything, even places I've never been 🙃 But this video is really a gem 💎
Can you please tell me the name of the old song??
I miss it tremendously!
I think the channel author once said the song didn’t have a title. But I would love a link to it.

Found it!!
Good to see you back :)
These videos are beautiful and make me nostalgic for something I never experienced
Wished you still had the more personal videos up though.
Conclusion that fits all major cities - more ads, less sky. Good to see you back!
This is so creative and gives a great look at Tokyo. Thank you for your wonderful work.
Happy Lunar New Year! Nowadays most people do not even realise their personal surroundings have changed over time. It takes a discerning eye and a sentimental mindset to pay homage to the past. Thank you!
It's been a long while for your to share your creativity again. You really prepared well for your comeback. Thank you and Congratulations...
Happy to see you back! あけましておめでとうございます!
Wonderful video, thank you very much!
Man, I heckin love your videos! Please don't take too big breaks, youtube seems so lonely without you !!

This was like a combination of virtual museum and detective work. It was so fun!

I felt happy and sad at the same time, nostalgic and beautiful. Thank you so much. Great job. A joy to watch. 🇵🇾🇯🇵🙏🏻👍🏻
와 대박!!映像がどてもうつくしいです👍
Very unique and interesting video! Love the way you conducted each research and narrowing down the places.
This was a great video. It must’ve taken you a long time to search and look for the exact places. Please keep up the good work 😆👏
Thank you!
Thanks for the video, this is amazing work (I cannot imagine the time it took to reach such incredible findings and images) And as for many of the comments, I was feeling so nostalgic for no reason as I am from Belgium. I have visited Japan 3 times already (I hope many future visits as well ! ) and some of the images of Shibuya reminded me of streets I have been. Same comment for Ebisu as I have visited twice the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum which is one of the best photography museum I have seen ! Looking forward for the next one :)
Thank you!
Amazing video im so happy this was recommended to me

Nice video 👍🏻
我很喜歡這部影片的主題, 正好新年一週的假期我就住在赤阪所以看著影片好有感受。
Finally uve returned back.. we were also feeling nostalgia just listen first sounds of intro music.. this video is incredible how detailed and precise u were 👏👏
:) :So interesting and relaxing! And you are so smart and thoughtful to make this :)
What a cool idea for a video, well done! Think the places in the 50s looked very different but it’s striking how many similarities there were between 1970s photos and now.
Im so glad youre back
I am in Tokyo now. Thank you for this.
Enjoy : )
Hi, have been following your channel from quite some time now because of which Tokyo was always on my bucket list. Finally got the opportunity to visit Tokyo last week. And you're right, its a truly magical City! Walking down its winding streets and parks made me feel like I'm in the middle of a Haruki Murakami novel! 😍
Wow this was worth the wait! Thank you!
Welcome Back!
You are a good analyst...
👏👏👏 Congratulations!! 🥰 Spectacular as always. You really take pride in your work. NOSTALGIA ❣️ Looking back is beautiful and moving forward is challenging but amazing. Looking forward to more great photos and videos. It's the year of the Rabbit and wishing you happiness and great adventures.🙏
So happy about the new video and I love this type of thing - to find and compare how some places changed.
Amazing content, Ryo.
Will inspire future Tokyo visitors to include in their itinerary.
Happy Lunar New Year!
Great video brother ✌️
So good to see you back again! Wasn't notified of the video for some reason. Need more Sorekara videos in my life. Look forward to the next one. Hope all is well with you.
Thanks for watching and thanks for your kind words!

Its greaaaat to see you back, ryo... been waiting your video for ages.. 😅
Terima kasih.. 🙏
Really happy to see you uploading. I love your channel, you have an incredible talent!Cheers from Italy! I hope to visit Japan someday.
This was lovely. Made me nostalgic for the Japan of old, and I'm not even Japanese. Haha.
This also seemed like a small glimpse of the curiosity you have, and the way your mind works. Interesting to watch.
Shots were lovely too. Keep doing what you're doing!
Your video is always good~
I am happy you are back~
Omg youre back! Thank you for this cinematic masterpiece
These photos showcase how much effort Japan has put in to get the country to where it is today. Incredible.
This was so fascinating to watch! Particularly when the locations weren't specified and you had to do detective work 🤓 I felt the excitement and curiosity too!
I hope the foreigner who uploaded can still watch this 🤩
YESSSSSHHHHHH!! AN UPLOAD!😍
you're back!
awesome effort!! it will not go to waste.... thank you so much. by the way i loved your crushed black look and handheld video style ...
your videos makes me feel relaxed
This was good cheers man❤
Hi. Happy New Year! It's good to see you again. It's really nice contents compared with old Japan seneces and current Japan's. Also, your vlog recording skills are improved much. Have a good weekend!
Thanks! Have a good weekend!
Awesome video, thanks for sharing!
Very stylish video and interesting investigation!
It's a little sad to see old cityscapes replaced by modern ones, but I'm sure living in those wooden post-war buildings was not very fun for the people.
YOOO! You totally leveled up your editing skills didn't ya? :D great video as always!
This is such a detailed video and i love it! Nice to see the old japan . it stays beautiful as it was half a century ago😆
I changed jobs about a year and a half ago and haven't had as much time to just chill with your videos on another screen. My last job afforded me all kinds of time like that.
In turn, you have also started uploading a little less. So it looks like we're in sync, you and I. We've both been busier than usual.
What an excellent concept for a video!
long time no see
happy new year!
This is lovely. Very nicely put together.
Yeeah.that's well . ))
beautiful.
really enjoyed this thank you
A great video, and I enjoyed seeing how Tokyo has changed over the years. I have been to Tokyo myself a few times and I also enjoy watching Ozu Yasujirō movies and like to compare the places in his movies and compare them to how they look today.
I hope you upload more vids. You have good content :)
Great video as always! History and our surroundings are always bound to change through innovation and modernizing. Can't wait to see your next video! Also I picked up my first two books by Haruki Murakami, I think they were apart of your old video on book recommendations.
The quality of your works reached an impressive level! I really enjoyed this video 😌
It's very nostalgic and bittersweet to see how things around us change so quickly... It makes me think that we're just passing through.
This rules, I love seeing the changes over time.
Very cool
Amazing work.
Yay! So excited and happy to see a new video! Every video has been a piece of encouragement and inspiration. Thank you for sharing not just what you see, but also sharing how you grow bit by bit in the process of creating. And also thank you for giving people a new way to learn and interact with a different part of the world.
happy happy new year.... gong xi fa cai. we missed you sir. thanks for this
あけましておめでとうございます :) Thank you for your work on this video, it truly is a masterpiece ! Can't wait for the next ones... Mayve you should make more videos of this type in 2023 ? Bonsoir de France ;)
Thanks! あけましておめでとうございます!
love your videos!!
thanks!
Such a fascinating video!! Thank you so much for showing us this ♡
This is so cool! What I liked is that there is video and sound today, as opposed to a still image in the past. Its not too different from the perspective of folks who photographed these places in the past, but this time you captured what the environment was like on that day, just a little bit more. Maybe 50 years from now someone or multiple people may look back at your video, and capture and compare changes over the years. Peace out.
Brother Best Wishes For New Year.(BTW I need to study for boards so your videos soothe my mood)
Gorgeous video 🙌
Happy new year! This was really lovely to see, its always sad when beautiful old buildings have been torn down but its wonderful that theres pictures of them to discover and its fun to see what has stayed the same :) great video as always
Greeaaaat, nice to see you again! How are you?
good. thanks!
This is definitely one of my favourite videos. The effort, the work behind.... Everything is perfectly well put together. May I ask if you're planning to share those pictures comparison to your IG account?
Thank you! Actually I'm planning to do that on Twitter. I'm not active on Instagram. I think I haven't logged in probably over a year. lol
Absolutely fascinating Ryo. I love this content. You are a great detective as well as a great videographer. I love how much Japan rebuilt after the war. A lot more could be done in Australia but it is always the same argument. Too costly. Considering the high taxes we pay that doesn't make sense to me. It's great to see some of the old buildings still remain and fit right in with their modern counterparts. Please do more of these videos when you are able .Happy New Year to you from Australia.
This was so much fun ^^
You have a good eye for good shots and a talent for an entertaining and educational video. So glad I’m subscribed!
Thanks (^^)
Thanks!
Thank you!
Finally a vlog comes after waiting a long time.
Fantastic work Sorekara.
This is a very good index of the prosperous growth Japan witnessed in those decades from 60s to 90s.
Unfortunately due to demographic issues in Japan , next 30 years will witness huge all round decline in Japan
Hope something is done to revive this wonderful land and not let it fade away Humanity has just one Japan.
I like to take comparison photos too but from anime LOL. Still interesting though because while central Tokyo changes rapidly some of the outer areas have changed very little like Mizuho. Areas like parks shown in Clannad anime are still there unchanged. The anime was released in 2007.
Happy new year. Please keep making these videos. I love them. From Manchester, UK .
Happy new year!
