Excel does indeed use same engine as the late Elite 2.2ltr, however,gearbox ,diff, rear brakes are all different and sourced from Toyota (initially Excel also used the four spoke alloys of Toyota Supra)

Excel mechanics entirely different to Elite. Different engine, gearbox and running gear.
The exterior of the Elite is not ugly. The dash and instruments is ghastly though.

I had an excel se...carburettor car.Old hat really.
The 70s elite and 80s Excel were night and day to each other
Oh look Morris Marina / Austin Allegro door handles how many other rubbish parts were lifted from British Leyland's parts bin... lol
