      "They get all huffy if you classify their favorite book as "guilty pleasure" as if it makes the book less than if you do so."
      That's because people these days cannot cannot grasp the concept of objective versus subjective.
      Just because you love a book does not make it a good book. ("Good" meaning well written.) The opposite is true as well. Just because you hate a book does not mean it's a bad book. ("Bad" meaning poorly written.)
      "If a book brings you any sort of pleasure, or therapy or release from reality then it's a good book mmmkay."
      Not really. It's enjoyable to you, but it does not necessarily mean it's a good book.
      I was given the first 'Twilight' book as a gift from a friend. It was fairly enjoyable. But I was also rolling my eyes at how poorly written it was. I love the 'Harry Potter' series. But I'm not going to claim it's equal to Shakespeare's works! (Or even Tolkien.)

    Angelfall isn't a guilty pleasure!! It's worthy of being a favorite! It's amazing--even though it is about angels, the plot is unique (the creepy monsters, angels being evil, and psycho mom), plus the main character is a kickass female protagonist, the writing is amazing and witty and suspenseful, and Raffe is freakin awesome!

      I like TMI more than TID as well, but of course I like both. I still TMI more tho.

    I wonder why it is that "guilty pleasure" is used when describing some books? What makes one book of more literary value over another? I constantly have this argument at my work (I'm a librarian) and I am afraid I fall down on the side of this - if ANY book is enjoyed by ONE reader then that book is of value. We can wish and hope that people read great literary pieces such as SOME classics. But really, why? I have always read "airport fiction" and I always will... so why should I feel guilty? I read to escape, to have fun, not too view life philosophically and not to try and delve into the deeper meaning of text written etc.
    So, that being said, I understand the difference between "literary" books and others, but I really do object to calling them "guilty pleasures" I refuse to feel guilt over any book I read. Maybe, it is the difference between those who review books and those (like me) who just rate books on how much I enjoy them (or not!)

    • @katej3097
      @katej3097 9 лет назад +5

      Wendy Fraser I think 'guilty pleasure is just a label with different meaning for everyone. The actual definition is: something, such as a movie, television program, or piece of music, that one enjoys despite feeling that it is not generally held in high regard. The book world as a whole is FULL of opinions of what makes a good book and often gives that impression on certain books or genres regardless of whether we personally take it seriously. A guilty pleasure is just another term for enjoying something not everyone thinks highly of. Maybe it's the wrong word choice - a better term might be indulgent pleasure?

    • @HunebeeNZ40
      @HunebeeNZ40 9 лет назад +4

      Kate N Might be that I am a tad overly sensitive to this terminology after being criticized for many MANY years over the types of books I read from "airport fiction" to "trashy romances" and now lately it's "you're a grown woman, what are you doing reading YA?".
      But I do take your point. Happy Indulgent reading to all =)

    • @katej3097
      @katej3097 9 лет назад +1

      Wendy Fraser That's probably where the term came from as a defense- calling it a guilty pleasure seems to verify that we realise it isn't literature at it's finest but we'll read it anyway cause we like it! I think it's just a case of culture picking a too strong, apologetic word in terms of literal meaning, but when it's used as a term in this sense, it doesn't place such a strong emphasis on guilty. i totally agree with you in that we should enjoy the right to read what we want to read, but it doesn't stop others from judging unfortunately.

    • @lanybelle1694
      @lanybelle1694 9 лет назад +4

      I completely agree with you! Completely. Yes I love reading but one thing I don't like to read is classics. I've tried to read so many different ones but I always get so bored & don't understand half the things that are written. Lol.
      If you happen to enjoy reading for the sake of knowledge, cool!
      To me it's not important whether I get the moral of the story, (although sometimes you do gain that), but it's about ENJOYING yourself no matter what genre you're reading.

    I would say Twilight is my longest-lasting guilty pleasure. I know it's poorly written, but the teen romance is just so sweet and so simple. Twilight is also what I refer to as my "gateway book," because it was the first book I read, way back when I was 11, that kick-started my passion for reading. I still re-read it.
    Also, I love all the Shadowhunter books. I just love the world Cassandra Clare created, but they totally are guilty pleasure books. I will say that I definitely agree with you in that the Infernal Devices trilogy is better. I think she just stretched out The Mortal Instruments series a little too long and a lot too thin.

    I absolutely LOVE the Mortal Instruments and the Infernal Devices!! I'm so excited for her new series to come out next year. She's also currently working on an e-book series (like the bane chronicles) called Tales from the Shadow Hunter Academy, i'm assuming it's about Simon's adventure through learning to be a shadow hunter. I have read everything she's written and i'm so ready for the rest of her books to be published. Cassandra Clare could keep writing books for the next 100 years and i'd be happy and perfectly content. :D

    Some of the comments in here are ridiculous LOL! Okay, first of all, this whole video is just this booktuber's opinion. Just because she classifies it that way, doesn't mean you have to. You are allowed to disagree with her, but don't shame her for having an opinion, even if you don't agree! Reading is subjective, we all look at books different ways. And saying something is "good" is being subjective. Writing is a type of storytelling art form. Some people will love a certain book, others will hate it, others will love it but think its not the best written, etc. ITS ALL SUBJECTIVE! No one is right or wrong. End of story. The whole point of discussing them is to learn from each other and look at things in a different way. Just like any other art form. Even the best critics and well educated in literature disagree all the time on what is good or bad!

    Now, to comment on the video--loved it! I agree with most of your choices. I LOVED Shatter Me so much, but I didn't love the rest of the trilogy nearly as much. I just couldn't get into the love triangle. I could never justify Warner. But I did really like Juliet and the writing was really good, especially that first book. I also agree the Infernal Devices is much better than The Mortal Instruments...she grew leaps and bounds as a writer from series to series IMO. That whole trilogy is just so beautiful, and incredibly quote worthy. Such great characters!

    YES to the Infernal Devices being better than the Mortal Instruments. I didn't even finish TMI because I couldn't get myself to read the fourth one anymore. That series went on way too long.

      ***** 4-6 really weren't needed, but if you ever do feel like retrying, 4 and 5 are totally redeemed by how good book 6 is.

    Hey hold on TMI is not a guilty pleasure! I really can't see why these books are ridiculous, actually it is my favourite book series we're talking about! Cassandra Clare is one of the most talented authors of YA books and I feel lucky to be one of her fans! There is nothing bad written about these books, they are not like anything else it just brings so many emotions to the readers. Have you read TID? I don't know about you but I kept crying about Herongraystairs for like three nights! Cassandra brought a whole new world to life and I do not accept the idea of anyone calling the Shadowhunter Chronicles a guilty pleasure! So there!

    I never really thought of Shatter Me as a guilty pleasure read, but now that I think about it I guess it is. I got my sister to read it and all she reads is contemporary.

    I feel like "guilty pleasures" translates into "YA paranormal romance" lol mine are Vampire Academy, the Lux series, and TMI/TID but i dont really feel that guilty about those bc they are literally everything that i desire in most books lol

    Um...none of these books are guilty pleasures. A guilty pleasure is a something your ashamed to love and most of the books you chose are known for being amazing. Its books like twilight that are guilty pleasures because their known for being cheesy and not very good. like seriously shatter me, the writing style is beautiful and I love recommending it to people because it makes me look smart even though my favorite book is still harry potter.

      2NE1 pilots most people dislike the shatter me trilogy though. Because of the bad world building and the writing style. I personally loved it. Lotta people hated it tho
