Life is about to get harder for low-flying MiGs, Hind gunships, and drones opposing the US Army. On Wednesday, the government officially awarded General Dynamics a highly-anticipated contract to mass-produce the Interim Maneuver SHORAD vehicle.
This variant of the 8×8 armored Stryker boasts an anti-aircraft radar, a 30mm autocannon, and a missile launcher capable of launching Stingers and Hellfires. (A laser-armed Stryker variant is also in development). IM-SHORAD will replace the aging, unarmored, and undergunned Avenger, a Stinger-shooting variant of the Humvee, which has filled the Short-Range Air Defense role since the Cold War. Its Hellfires also give it significant capability to kill tanks.
The first combat unit to receive IM-SHORAD is already training on prototype vehicles at White Sands, the Army’s director of modernization for air & missile defense told me recently. Live-fire training will start in early November, Brig. Gen. Brian Gibson said.
The nine prototypes now being used for training and testing are basically identical to the final production version, but they were bought under a separate contract. The award announced yesterday is the production contract.
Formally, it’s an Indefinite Delivery Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract - although there’s a pretty definite plan to deliver 144 vehicles over five years for $1.2 billion. That’s just under $8.5 million apiece, but the contract includes testing, spares, and other support as well as the vehicle itself.

The Stinger® missile is a lightweight, self-contained air defense system that can be rapidly deployed by ground troops. Combat proven in four major conflicts, the weapon has more than 270 fixed- and rotary-wing intercepts to its credit. It's deployed in 19 nations and with the U.S. Army, the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Marine Corps.
RMP variant
The Stinger-Reprogrammable Microprocessor, or RMP, missile has a greater than 90 percent success rate in reliability and training tests. Its supersonic speed, agility and a highly accurate guidance and control system give the weapon an operational edge against cruise missiles and all classes of aircraft. The system is also used on Apache helicopters for air-to-air engagements.
Counter-UAS
In 2019, the U.S. Army began retrofitting its Stinger missiles with proximity fuzes, which allow missiles to destroy unmanned airborne systems with direct hits or by detonating near them. A pair of Stinger missiles intercepted two drones using proximity fuzes during an Army test in 2017.
The modified missile offers ground troops better defense against small, agile threats.

As for troops with handheld anti-armor, the SHORAD is a backline support vehicle so it’s deployed with a complement of armor and/or infantry.

The Stryker was conceived as a family of vehicles forming the backbone of a new medium-weight brigade combat team (BCT) that was to strike a balance between heavy armor and infantry. The service launched the Interim Armored Vehicle competition, and in 2000, the service selected the LAV III proposed by GDLS and General Motors Defense. The service named this family of vehicles the "Stryker".
Problems were encountered with the initial batch of ceramic armor when it was found that a number of panels failed in tests against 14.5 mm ammunition. Army officials determined that this was due to changes in the composition and size of the panels introduced by their manufacturer, IBD Deisenroth. A stopgap solution of adding another 3 mm of steel armor was introduced until a permanent solution could be found.[64] The issue was resolved in 2003 when DEW Engineering was selected as the new, exclusive supplier for the ceramic armor.
The Army began sending reactive armor tiles to Strykers in Iraq in 2004, as well as tiles for Abrams tanks and Bradley Fighting Vehicles. Tiles have to be specifically crafted for each vehicle type they are fitted to. Insurgents attempted to counter reactive armor by having teams fire multiple RPGs at once, but at close range these groups could be engaged and broken up. Reactive armor can be defeated by tandem-charge weapons like the RPG-29 or by explosively formed penetrators, although the Bradley's tiles can withstand EFPs.[68] In 2005, slat armor for the Stryker vehicles was designed and developed by the Army Research Laboratory and the Aberdeen Test Center in Maryland to further protect them from RPGs.[69]
The cage is placed 50 cm ahead around the vehicle, allowing a RPG warhead to explode at a safe distance from the vehicle.[70] The slat armor on the Stryker vehicles is reportedly effective against HEAT rounds. In May 2009, General Dynamics and Rafael won a contract to provide SRAT tiles to replace slat armor on Strykers. The additional weight of the two systems is comparable, but reactive armor tiles offer greater vehicle stability and maneuverability and "assured" rather than "statistical" protection.
