Very good question. The Torah was never forgotten by the entire nation. The incident with Josiah the King happened during a time in Jewish History where many, but not all Jews, practiced some form of Idolatry along with Judaism. During this time you still have the righteous prophets censuring their brethren for their transgressions and you still have a fully working Temple with its daily practices. Following is a link to a good article about some of the background of this incident:
    www.ou.org/torah/parsha/rabbi-fox-on-parsha/parshat_bechukotai_the_tragedy_of_yoshiyahu_/
The main focus of that event has more to do with the "shock" of finding (possibly) one of the "original" Torah scrolls written by Moses - which had been hidden until then for fear of it being destroyed by the previous few generations of kings who were hostile towards religion. Josiah understood that the sudden finding of this special scroll along with the section to which is was open - from which he read was a "foreboding" sign from Heaven. He, then, felt compelled to immediately initiate a major religious campaign to strengthen "specifically" two areas in Judaism that needed strengthening, namely, the purging of pagan beliefs and practices and the Pilgrimage Festivals that required all Jews to ascend to Jerusalem and come to the Temple three times a year - a practice that many kings before him opposed.
Observance of the Torah at the time was not too different than today, where many Jews, unfortunately, are not connected or simply ignorant of the basic tenets of their faith. At that time to be knowledgeable of what the Torah says was made more difficult because not everyone possessed a Torah scroll and most of the laws were retained and transmitted orally. So with the exception of the scribes, prophets, and Levites, most of the Jewish nation at the time was ignorant, not only of the Torah text, but of the Torah warning of what would happen to them if they deviated from its path. You can, however, see how they responded to the King, and had their renewed adherence to observance of the Torah been more complete and lasting they would have averted the destruction of the Temple.
It is clear that this unusual incident happened the way it did, as a last chance of sorts, to portend what is to come if the nation does not heed the words of the prophets. Josiah, who at that time, may himself not have been well versed in the Torah, was nonetheless chosen and given the chance to be the one to lead this religious campaign, for he was the first sincere and pious king after several generations of uncommitted kings who was determined to restore complete loyalty and devotion to G-d and the Torah.

Abarbanel explains that Yoshiyahu HaMelekh A”H had complete knowledge of the Torah all the way up to this point. The Torah was wide spread in those days and people were already being compelled to gather 3 times a year in Yerushalayim. Abarbanel explains why Yoshiyahu HaMelekh A”H reacted the way he did, it wasn’t because he didn’t know about the punishments, he had already known all of them by heart, as he had known Kol HaTorah Kuloh by heart. See Abarbanel on the Possuk in Melachim for his full תירוץ.
In short, the Torah was widespread in those days and was in the hands of the people in every town, city, and village. Yoshiyahu HaMelekh A”H’s reaction had nothing to do with whether or not the Torah was widespread in those days, in all the days of Am Yisroel the Torah has always been widespread. For proof of this see the Abarbanel citation I provided above.

Very good question. Deistic and Fideistic beliefs were around in the past and were espoused by many intelligent people. However, they only addressed the relationship of G-d to this world in its created form - which was obvious to them. They never, however, subjected their intellect to try to understand G-d's relationship with the human beings he created. They may answer the How, but not the Why. Why did G-d create the world? What is the purpose of all this? Does man have any mission? Judaism teaches that life has meaning and purpose, and human beings play an active role in this world. They are endowed with Free Will, which makes them accountable for their actions. The thought of accountability makes many (even Intelligent) people uncomfortable, and they would rather avoid thinking about it. To take "the leap of Faith" - where man has to answer to G-d requires a healthy dose of humility - which many intelligent people lack. The Torah is a manual of instructions for the Jewish People intended for accomplishing "their" mission. However, Judaism teaches that even without the Torah G-d implanted in the soul the ability to know on its own right from wrong, but provided the rest of the world with seven basic instructions (Seven Noachide Laws) so that the world can survive. There is a need for clear Divine instructions, since no matter how intelligent the human being is - he is limited and not perfect and is susceptible to error. It is because human beings have repeatedly violated G-d's laws - that there is continuous war and strife.

Yes the Greeks taught that the Earth was flat and that it rested on some dudes back while at the same time the LORD wrote in the book of Isaiah says:
"and It is he that sitteth upon the globe of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as locusts: he that stretcheth out the heavens as nothing, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in." Isa 40:22 RHE
"God sits high above the round ball of earth.
The people look like mere ants.
He stretches out the skies like a canvas-
yes, like a tent canvas to live under." Isa 40:22, MSG
The word "חוּג" chug refers to a circle, a dome (semi-sphere) and sphere (as in globe)

Jen M Jen, u want proof? The Torah was given at Sinai in front if Millions of witnesses. Do you think our forefathers didn't see the Torah given and just went along with it to be governed completely based off an event they hadn't witnessed? It's the only religious event in history that had millions of documented witnesses. On top of that, the number of constellations and stars was accurately ascertained from the Torah thousands of years before telescopes were invented. Today, science has confirmed the Torah' s number of stars within a fraction of a percent. My question is who do you think is right? The Torah or NASA?

If you are Jewish, then investigate why your forefathers were willing to give their lives for what you call "Bogus." Perhaps you are mistaken, not them. Take a year off and do some serious studying about Judaism. You will feel so happy you did so. Then come back and share with others like yourself what you discovered.

Its very hard to prove the Torah is divinely inspired when there are pieces of it that are copied from other ancient works, if you need proof i am more than happy to furnish them. Every religious group thinks their leaders or religious book is inspired, that's nothing new. Ask Islam and the Quran, the Hindus and their Vedas, the Mormons and their books, and the list goes on.....Something that is divinely inspired has to be original, no flaws or contradictions and there is no book currently out that posses such qualities, not one. As one that is religious, i like to study other text outside my religion, one should never be arrogant enough to think that some how they are the only truth holders.

There were highly intelligent thinkers like Einstein, Spinoza, Thomas Paine, the Founding Fathers of the United States and others who did not believe God left an instruction manual, while they did believe he created the world. It seems extraordinary to me to blithely dismiss their arguments.

Maybe YOU reached the wrong conclusions about the divinity of Torah because YOU set out to reach the wrong conclusions. NOTHING you have presented here in any way offers proof of the divinity of the Torah, and in fact, only sheds light on why men felt compelled to write such laws (i.e. to keep people in line, the promise them everlasting life, to make them accountable, to give them hope and something to believe in, etc.)

    • @7200beverly
      @7200beverly  11 лет назад +1

In order for any aspect of Divinity to make any sense to a human being - he has to be open to the plausibility of it; then the evidence presented can help. If you have "preconceived notions," then what you are really saying is "I have already made up my mind; don't confuse me with the facts."

Tom, all you need to do is disprove the Jewish claim to the truth. The Jews have presented their case. Go ahead and find holes, contradictions, and perhaps a conspiracy....Any other claim from other religions cannot stand the rigorous tests for the Truth as Judaism does. You may gain some additional insight from the following lecture ruclips.net/video/Z32km7vwhTE/видео.html.

no certainties. none. if it was all so certain - there would be no need for separation. let charedi kids go to public school, learn how religious manipulation and indoctrination works in general -- and then call me. it's indoctrination, and all indoctrination (even if it turns out true in the end) is just that - separate, indoctrinate, suppress, omit, distort. this isn't G-d - it's you. G-d has nothing to do with this - it's all you. every day, you wake up and say "in what way will I sway them today?"
NO one should EVER say that to themselves and be serious.
Go ahead and let your kids go to a JesusCamp. I doubt you would. WHY?
      you understand indoctrination.
      practice that understanding.

i know the tanakh is divine but not the talmud.
Rabbi you said that some rabbi can trace their rabbi's rabbi all the way back to Moshe ! if that is true then we can find the names of the "corrupters".
Isaiah 1:1 The vision of Isaiah the son of Amoz, which he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah.
2 Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth: for the LORD hath spoken, I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me.
3 The ox knoweth his owner, and the ass his master's crib: but Israel doth not know, my people doth not consider.
4 Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters: they have forsaken the LORD, they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger, they are gone away backward.
    and
Jeremiah 9:1 Oh that my head were waters, and mine eyes a fountain of tears, that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people!
2 Oh that I had in the wilderness a lodging place of wayfaring men; that I might leave my people, and go from them! for they be all adulterers, an assembly of treacherous men.
3 And they bend their tongues like their bow for lies: but they are not valiant for the truth upon the earth; for they proceed from evil to evil, and they know not me, saith the LORD.
4 Take ye heed every one of his neighbour, and trust ye not in any brother: for every brother will utterly supplant, and every neighbour will walk with slanders.
5 And they will deceive every one his neighbour, and will not speak the truth: they have taught their tongue to speak lies, and weary themselves to commit iniquity.
6 Thine habitation is in the midst of deceit; through deceit they refuse to know me, saith the LORD.
for a rabbi to trace his rabbi's rabbi all the way back to moses then you know for sure that the teaching went through bad people and came out unclean !... NO oral Torah ! the oral torah is not divine other that some of its content comes from divination !

The world of objective truth makes the Torah just... wrong. And hardly divine. Some parts are actually embarrassing. Most atheist "Debunkers" have a long way to go before they can do honest research. They usually belong to the group that has made up their mind and don't want to be confused by the facts. They apparently believe that they are more intelligent than the great minds (Jewish and Non-Jewish) of the past to whom it was so obvious and crystal clear that G-d created the world and communicated His instructions to humanity at large through the Torah.

      D. Apple The Blog was checked out. It unfortunately does not engage in an honest quest for the Truth. The psychology of the style of how it is written is typical of Orthodox Jews who suffered some trauma in their youth. The Blog's "opinions" that Modern day Archaeology disproves the Bible's account is totally false. The opposite is true, and there are many sources that support the Bible account. It is very sad and painful to see how certain "disenchanted" Jews go to great lengths to disguise their disillusion with Judaism by rehashing old "scientific" arguments against the Bible that have already been successfully addressed and answered in many forums.

    • @7200beverly
      @7200beverly  10 лет назад +2

      D. Apple It is true that the great minds of the past were unaware of certain "details" about the complexity of the universe and Life as a whole. But these great minds were humble enough to recognize that this complex universe has a Creator, something modern Scientists refuse to even consider. Also, Secular Scientists don't have a monopoly on how to interpret the the non-observable past. So, lets not forget the many Scientists today who have an open mind and do accept and fully subscribe to the Biblical account of Creation. The "Truth" is really not that hard to discover, but it is heavy. That is why few are willing to carry (to live by) it.
