Wow, Marije, amazing stuff. I was just listening to this Kansas album the other day and thinking how amazing it was, Steve's playing and compositions on it are just a gem, and I was thinking how sad that very few people under a certain age probably know about it. So glad you find this treasure and posted it.
Two of my favorite musicians in the world. On stage together. David Ragsdale and, Steve Morse. I wish they would, at least do a project. Their suited for each other. Both have, an extremely high level, and quality of musicianship. Ragsdale is also a fantastic guitarist, as well as, being a deadly accurate violinist. Steve Morse is definitely a great songwriter. Obviously, a big fan of both worlds of talent. Thank you for posting.
That's the name of the national music network in Canada... back when they actually played music! I think that the host is Erica Ehm. The 1991 clip of Simple Simon is also in the MuchMusic studios in Toronto. In the mid afternoon, they would often have visitors in the studio who would play and speak a little.
Yes, that is odd, but apart from that it's all cool stuff! I got this from a friend and fellow Morse fan and then managed to upload it. You are welcome!
Thanks for posting! I'm a huge Steve Morse fan and have been listening and/or watching him play live since the 70s. I have heard a ton of great guitar players, but if I had to pick just one that I could listen to, I pick Steve. Haters leave me alone, I admit I am biased; just my opinion. And he's a great guy also, not the big "jack in the box" head you may think from such awesome talent. Thanks again @Marije Essink
You are very welcome! And you are very right, about him being a great player and a great guy too! If you are on Facebook, look for ~*STEVE MORSE* \FAN PAGE/ RUclips does not allow me to post the link...
Oh yeah, Steve mentioned Rush, another HUGE favorite of mine. To see the Dixie Dregs open up for Rush would have been the sweetest thing. I'll share a moment: I saw Rush during their "All The Worlds A Stage" tour and they opened for Ted Nugent. Nuff said- Rush blew him away!! And I love Stranglehold and Free For All... Well, Rush was epic. It was at the LA Forum a long time ago. Although I wouldn't try to say that Dregs outdid Rush, I don't know.... I could only imagine what that would have been like. Anyone who knows care to share that experience with the rest of us?
I saw SMB open for Rush, in Richmond, VA. Found out about Steve being the open act when we got there. What a surprise. One of those times that you did not want the open act to stop, and I love rush.
I think Steve Morse was a better fit in Kansas than Deep Purple, although he's stayed with the Purps longer. Kansas played music more fitting with Morse's diversity of styles. Or maybe I'm just biased. Watching him play with a violinist takes me back to his Dregs days.
Yes, Kansas may have been more fitting with his diversity of styles, but Kansas did work with outside writers a lot, and Steve could not really do his own thing. I think that in DP he has much more musical and artistical freedom.
As I had posted on another of your Morse/Kansas video compilations, Steve told me that he never could quite get a handle on what Kansas wanted or expected from him. Being a popular band that was getting airplay and MTV exposure at a time when the music biz was more biz than music, there was likely to be heavy pressure in Kansas to conform and not stray too far from their "winning" formula....the A&R reps' mantra was probably "keep coloring within the lines! "
I believe he was equally uplifting for both bands because those two albums are as good as any Deep Purple album with him. Kansas weren't in Purple's commercial league and the numbers don't lie, c'mon. However, they were as good as anyone at the end of the day. It just doesn't mean anything, a steady job with a stable organization is more important as long as he can express himself within it.
I saw them on that tour! It was awesome! I f I remember correctly Livgren was pictured in the poster for the show. When the band came out and there was no Livgren, at first I was like WTH!!! Then I noticed Steve Morse.... oh yeah!!!! I thought it was cool that Steve sang "Play The Game Tonight". I wish this line up had written and recorded an album........
so odd with the girl sitting right in front of them, instead of to the side.Otherwise, very cool and RARE to see this. Thanks for posting to RUclips for us Morsefreaks.
walsh....man.....I wish I could have the street value of all the substances he used during this period....I could buy a house. At least he lived to tell about it.....
Okay . . . What the heck was with the guy "pounding" stuff (Cymbals) in the background? :D Steve Walsh is looking back like "What the hell???" and then Steve Morse begins to lose his train of thought :P That had to be a comedy show or some joke right? :D At: 27:53 Seems it was a "Report" on MTV, but maybe it was their Road Crew :p.
I've been looking for that MTV studio interview for many years now. From what I recall, the guy in the background was a nod to the blacksmith figure on the front cover of the "Power" album. All that pounding and acting like he didn't know what he was doing resulted in the "blacksmith" presenting the interviewer with a homemade MTV logo.
Wow, the vocals surprised Mr, not expecting it. Excellent mix. Thanks.
The cutoff of the MUCH tape during Sleaze Factor is heartbreaking. That was phenomenal.
Big Steve Morse fan. Really enjoyed the footage of his time with Kansas.
They did the music justice.
My favorite part are Steve Walsh''s outrageous stage acrobatics...that was awesome!!!!!
nobody believed me when i told them about Steve Walsh doing handstands off his keyboard. So glad to have proof at last. LOL!

I remember this, I have it on video somewhere, with Erica
I believe the On the Pipe clip is from MuchMusic in Canada.
Yes!!!
Thanks for the info!

Great surprise indeed :-) facebook.com/groups/stevemorse
My go-to player when I want to listen to sweet music. Stressfest in particular.

Yeah, that must have been tricky... And stifling for creativity...

Thanks for sharing, just ran across it. Awesome!
Weird; Morse playing violin on "Dust in the Wind" in Kansas. (And backing vocals and some keyboards on other songs.)

@@JoeChewBaca They did, "Power"1986 and "In the Spirit of Things"1988, great albums ;)

Leftoverture: KANSAS' FINEST!!

Several houses.
