    Comments on The Stranger by Camus
    The Stranger by Albert Camus was published in 1942 in its original French, and four years later, in English. With over ten million readers since its publication, it is one of the most recognized works of existential fiction, along with Sartre’s Nausea. The Stranger tells the story of Meursault, who his convicted and sentenced for a murder. Camus uses this character to demonstrate what he called “the absurd man,” someone who has recognized the absurdity of human existence and accepts this belief to the death.

    Great discussion! I've just started reading The Fall because I think you mentioned that's going to be your next Camus focus? I ordered a used copy on eBay and when it showed up, it turned out to be a French edition. So I ordered another so that I could read it in English the first time, and then I plan to re-read it in the original French!

      Oh nice! That is great to hear! Personally, I think I actually like The Fall better. Or at least, I did when first reading Camus. It is very different than The Stranger, but just as poetic and deep. Hope you enjoy it! 😎

    Excellent video! Very interesting about his stance against capital punishment! I love all the different ways of exploring the concept of the stranger, how it can be condemning from society, but in a way-at the end-kind of liberating. I think existentialism is often mistaken for nihilism and what you pointed out in the last few pages seems to distinguish why Meursault's stance is existentialist. He seems to find a sense of agency through the construction of personal meaning, and like you said, it's not careless. You can let me know if I misunderstood any of that. I really should read this book! 😅 Great job responding to comments!

    • @attention5638
      @attention5638  2 года назад +1

      Oh! I don't think you misunderstood anything--that is dead on. Though Camus did not see himself as an existentialist, it is for reasons like this that many people do put him with the existentialists of his time. I may have to do a second video like this after all--I could go on about this for quite a while haha. But for now, this is absolutely correct, thank you!

    As I sure you've learned from Tom's series on The Divine Comedy, the comments add a richness to the discussion. I'm deliberately late watching those videos so I can read the comments. I am glad you read it too! There are a lot of classics I don't get along with, and when it comes to this one, particularly, it is a very specific concept that a lot of people just don't care for, and there is nothing wrong with that!😊

    What a thrill to be included in a conversation about one of my favorite books with so many intelligent people! This kind of video is exceptionally good at making one feel a part of a community of readers and thinkers (even if I weren't included as a commenter).
