That shot off the deck was about one of the greatest shots I've ever watched. Especially when you're talking it to the hole, man just greatness. Be well you two.
I started golf in about 1960. A friends righty clubs, but I am a lefty. Still play right handed, except for always have putted lefty. Got pretty good hitting those clubs. Then another friend gave me some older clubs yet to fill out my set. They were hickory shafted. Could hit those irons as good as the steel shafted ones. Still loving the game at age 71. It was fun watching.
kinda annoyed me tbh like thats a fat fucking divot, usually there are a few pockmarked about but here he made at least 8 right fuckin on top of each other so you can see it from a mile away
Personally I would prefer the 100 year old clubs because I could use that as an excuse for my poor play. Little do they know, I would be just as bad with modern clubs...
Me too! Not worried about my clubs - Golden Bear (ladies) 1990s perhaps? It's my swing...but I've only played 5 games so far...Looking forward to possible progress...or just a nice stroll on the course, LOL
Love this video. A buddy of mine that played on tour (born 1970) said in the early 90s that he had more "feel" with his old persimmons than the metal woods at the time. He felt he could shape it better. I'd love to see a vid with the most modern actual woods versus today's metal woods.
there needs to be so many more of these videos! antique club reviews, comparisons on GC quad, battles with rick, tour players trying to use them. this is a load of untapped potential!!
Grew up on a course built in the late 1800s here in the states and I found some Hickory-shafted clubs tucked away in a closet. That's what I learned on growing up. That was back in the early '60s. Greatest game ever invented. You hit the 100 yr. old clubs very well Peter.
@John Buick I'd love to watch Jay Leno golf also! Don't know if he plays...Probably show up in a 1919 car also, LOL (Not missing your point, but golf IS a game to enjoy.
Just goes to show how little clubs really have come on. 100yrs is an incredible amount of time for such little increments. I game Hogan Apex II's from '79 and I see no reason to blow a grand on new stuff tbh. Not sure I'd get on with 100yr old hickory's mind.... Great vid Pete.
Steve McVay A couple of seasons ago, I finally bought myself a good set of clubs that were on the pricey side. The difference (to the better) in my game is night and day.
Steve McVay for real. I have a $100 set of Wilson’s. Only thing I’ve upgraded was the driver (Taylor Made Burner) and I hit low 90s-mid 80s. Not great but I don’t think the clubs are why I don’t hit 70s. It’s because I don’t play enough
I learned the game with a set of wooden shaft clubs. The wooden shafts loose a lot of distance with the longer clubs but the wooden shaft is more forgiving. The 9 iron used to be a chipping and short club until the 30’s when Gene Sarazen added lead to the base of his nine iron and created the first wedge. He made the club for the “Old Course” which he credited his new invention for the win. For young kids I highly recommend wooden shaft clubs and a standard wedge. Fore
Play on a shortish course (max 6000 yds) with hickory is the best that a golfer can experience. I enjoy exclusively hickory play since 9 seasons and I will most probably not return to modern golf clubs. The feel of a proper hit with an hickory club is so pleasing. I simply love it.
I group of my friends and myself played a Hickory tournament and with a replica golf balls. I was so fun and surprisingly easy to hit once you get used to the bow in the shaft! I almost kept the niblick in the bag for chipping around the green! And we liked the putters! Driver is a low runner!
The sound of the older wooden clubs is so much more satisfying. Nice solid contact sound and not that hollow tinny sound one gets from modern metal "woods".
I've never held a golf club in my life, but after RUclips recommended a Rick Sheils video to me about 2 weeks ago, I've become addicted to watching yours and Ricks golfing videos, although I have little to no desire of ever actually playing the game. You should have a friendly play-off with Rick using those old hickory clubs and a couple of the 1920 balls that Rick has. (£50 each so you won't want to knock one of those into the pond.
Can't believe the performance of that niblik! Everything I expected (knifed divots, impossibly small sweet spot, grooveless stopping spin, accuracy issues from its wood shaft...) was all fine and even great! I love it when shitty old clubs perform excellently!
I play with a set of hickories made up of original and reproductions. A word of advice each club has its own tempo, and once you find that tempo they perform well. In fact the difference in my score between my modern clubs and the hickories is about 3 shots per round higher, but the satisfaction is measurably higher with the hickories. There is a great satisfaction when you pure a drive down the middle and stick the approach shot with the hickories, they will reward your skill. I do not like it when I hit a modern club poorly and still get a good result I feel the scientist achieved the shot not me. I feel technology is a bit out of control at the moment, that is why I dabble with hickories and clubs from the 1960's. In fact I play with the hickories during my single matches in men's league. Others should give hickories a shot, they are a lot of fun. Great video by the way, your swing has an awesome tempo.
I've always found these to be interesting. More interesting to me would be a comparison of clubs from say 5-10 years ago to see how much better newer clubs really are especially for mid to higher handicappers.
I played a nine hole course with hickory clubs last week. It was cut to match 1920s standards and we used modern balls designed to perform like 20s ones. It was fun but really tough. Great video, I enjoyed the view of Auchterarder golf course in the background, too.
Gleneagles is seriously one of the most beautiful places on earth. Fun challenge & pretty cool to see you do alright w/ those ancient clubs! Best of luck tomorrow in the RUclips golf day!
I really think it's your game that makes the difference. I gave my dad a 60year old eagle iron set which look darn similar to a Titleist set and he matches me or better to my 5 year old Taylormade set. But we have played with actual wood sets in a while since we shattered all of the ones we had growing up with
Even from when I started as a junior in the early 70’s the change is huge, bladed irons and small wooden heads. Certainly made you learn how to strike a ball correctly!
Great ball striking with those old clubs. I love playing hickory golf. I'd like to see the Open being played with all the modern pros playing hickory clubs. That would be a true open!
The hickory driver is actually a "fairway wood" equivalent - called a brassie because of the brass baseplate which was meant to protect the club when in contact with the ground. That said I would recommend anyone to have a go with hickories
Excellent video! Maybe the start of an "equipment through the ages" type series? Let's get some persimmon and blades up in here and do some comparisons!!! (Carly is hilarious, btw).
I played golf with an old Scot in Ottawa Canada, in mid 1970s. He played old hickory shafted clubs and hit low draw that would never get very high. He played great shots pitch and runs. Never played high shots.
Another factor would be the course maintenance, as someone who works on a course doing the groundskeeping our modern equipment help keep everything perfect. I could only imagine how different a course would have been 100 years ago.
I actually used a super old bladed putter for a bit when I first started experimenting with putters. Honestly, if you putt using instinct, not a bad thing to use.
Great test Peter. These tests routinely make me wonder the need for brand new clubs. Clubs in good condition from a decade ago, cannot be that different.
That was a great vlog to be honest; I would love to play with those hickory clubs myself. My first set of clubs looked a bit similar but had metal shafts painted or lacquered to look like wood. I still have the putter to this day. Have to say that Carly was somewhat fierce with her comments; BRAVO says I! Cheers
I have always thought that they should have stopped development at wooden "woods" and traditional lofted irons. I learned to play with these. I went to residential school and it’s safe to say they don’t really update the clubs. When you can hit these straight pulling my mizuno jpx 800 pro irons and Callaway razr x black driver feels easy
these old clubs remind me of my very first set when I was a kid. they were a ratty old antique juniors set from a garage sale for $5. 1st swing at the driving range and the clubhead of the wood flew off and went about 80 yards, which was farther than the ball went lmao....and that was the day I knew golf was not for me.
Great video Pete, those hickory clubs are still something quite special to play with, the driver off the deck was such fun to watch, and it looked great to hit ☺
Great vid Finchy! I LOVE this kind of old vs new stuff. Looks like except for the long clubs it's the old irons performed pretty well. As did what looked to be the old driver off the deck from 220yds. Goes to show...it ain't the arrow...it's the Indian.
This video was so cool. carly's comment on your mid iron shot was classic and that shot with driver off the deck was Tigeresque! Very nice. Love to see you play a round with the 100 year old clubs and see how you would fair.
amazing video once again Pete. I am curious to know if you have ever done this type of challenge with 1970's era clubs. again amazing video please keep them coming
Does show how much it's the person on the end of the club that matters - if you know what you're doing, as you clearly do, then you can hit a good shot with any club.
Hi Peter, I have and still use a Gradidge Greensite wedge. I think it’s from the 30s or 40s. It has a turtle shell coloured metal shaft. It badly needs a re-grip but the head shape is superb and the deep grooves help control spin. I think I’d have to go a long way to find anything as good these days.
I got a modern set but I always carry one hickory driver and an old PW. I swear when I want to make sure I dont mess up I use the old club. So much more forgiving 😆
Hi Peter enjoyed the video. Next time you try Hickory clubs use the lowest compression ball you can find and you will find better contact and forgiveness in your shot making as the old balls were low compression. You know you can buy replica 1920’s golf balls with square dimples and there great to play with.. Steve from down under..!
That was a Brilliant shot off the deck... Very entertaining video... Good job 🍻 Carly is terrific and should be in some videos. She made a good video a great one with one comment.. 🤷♀️

friendly fire!
jjh214 yeah she’s pretty brutal!
I caught that too I’m laying in bed and started laughing my butt off! Honestly we need some more commentary from her she’s awesome!
Amazing! Two stunning shots with the hickory driver off the deck. To lip out from 220 with a 100 year old wood is just amazing. Serious talent
I made an eagle on a par 4 with my hickories....

Can you and Rick do a course vlog with hickory clubs soon?
yes!!!!!
Please!!

Do a FSX skill challenge using these vintage clubs please

Clubs don’t make you good. People put waaaaaaay to much money into clubs and not enough time into practicing.
my roommate thinks he's a better golfer than I am because his clubs are $200 more than mine. He hasn't golfed in 3 years lol
people spend that much to make it so they dont have to practice as much
Not when you have a swing like his. But when you have one like mine? Yeah, they do.
