Your hitting down on the ball my dude. Hitting a driver is like hitting a forehand in tennis. Hit up on the ball with shaft leaning forward. That will help keep that spin down.
The relationship between Brodie and Garrett is dope! Love all these videos! Im in Florida, ill do anything to have you guys take me to play golf for the first time, only played mini golf! Would love to play with the boys. Many great courses around here.
Brodie had the ball too far back in his stance. Need an upward angle to increase launch/lower spin. But the likely culprit is the old ball and him overswinging. Those old clubs are different beasts. The harder you swing the more it spins.
@@BrodieSmithGolf I think if you'd hit your 80-85% "fairway finder" swing on those you'd have had a better chance of making a few over 275. More speed is good with a current ball. That wasn't always the case haha.
So from 1920-2020 we have only gained 30 yards of distance in drivers and people buy new drivers every other year and sometimes every year. I’ve been using the same clubs since I was 16. I’m 35 now
today my grandpa lent me his 1958 macgregor tourney velocitized persimmon driver cause i dont own any clubs right now, i was having trouble with my drives and he helped me hit them more consistently with his driver. it feels so different but the wooden hit sound is amazing to me.
I learned how to play with a set from the 40's. Could crank the driver over 270 by the time I was 14. You have to hit more of a stringer if you want to saying as hard as you can and you'll get the spin rate way down.
Those old clubs (50-80's persimmons) were always teed up low. LIke 3/8s of an inch. Shot came out low and hot and they ran when they hit the ground. Tee it up lower.
325 is the new 250! Plus the new balls fly straighter. Let's just keep making the game easier. . .. good for the ego. But all that said, wouldn't it have been easier to have just shortened the courses and made the hole 8.5" in diameter?
Some errors here. 11:51 "Wilson Staff driver, 1985. This was the last time a major was won with a persimmon-head club." I am a persimmon fanatic and to the best of my recollection, Bernhard Langer won the 1993 Masters with a persimmon driver. The persimmon driver he used was a Wood Bros. Texan driver. That was the last persimmon to win a major. 14:41 "Early 2000's" Big Bertha. The Great Big Bertha, I remember, came out in 1996. First was Big Bertha in 1991, then next the Big Bertha War Bird up to about 1995. GBB was released in 1996, followed by The Biggest Big Bertha in 1997.
The flex on all of those clubs fits Garrett’s swing much more. His tempo & lag are much better than Brodie’s. You can see the club load up & release with Garrett. Also, when you guys started to collaborate, I figured Garrett would beef up to look like Brodie. Didn’t see the opposite coming..
Brodie must be coming down on the ball vs hitting up into it. His swing speed is plenty good. Just some minor swing adjustments to come into the ball on the right launch angle. You could see the modern equipment more geared for his high speed swing.
You need to keep your shoulders more square through the ball at impact. You're slightly dipping your back shoulder and pulling out your left shoulder which is making you lift up on the ball. That's why you're hitting the bottom of the club and getting a lot of spin. If your shoulders are level and square at impact then your clubhead will follow.
Put the videos of the two of you side by side. I'm not an expert, but eyeball evidence has Brodie overswinging and not extending on his followthrough--and it got worse the more frustrated he got, to the point where he was almost falling back on his through swing. I know what I'm talking about because I do the same things when I'm swinging out of my shoes--but, then, I'm a 90mph 14 handicap. I'm surprised to see it here. I think he hit the modern driver well because his confidence with it was high.
Usually when you play with Persimmon Woods, it helps with the consistency of contact at impact. So as a suggestion I would use Persimmon in practice just to help with consistency.
Fades carry longer, but have a bit of backspin, so they don't have much roll.. draws don't hang in the air as long because they have a bit of topspin, but are usually slightly more solid contact due to the swing path, and with the topspin, they get much more roll
Great video. What is your dynamic loft? (Loft of the club at impact) If your spin rate is high it’s usually because of a high dynamic loft. Slide those hands a little forward (forward press) and that will get that spin rate down. Love your videos fellas.
I can recall playing with my boss back in the late 70's and he and his partner hit their persimmon drivers around 300 yds on several holes. I remember thinking at that time, "jeez, how far must Nicklaus hit it?"
How are you finding our Scottish courses, would you compare them to BP Black, I can't stand the rough we have but since I live in Scotland gotta deal with it!
Must have been crazy to watch old jack hitting over 300 plus yards off the tee with those wood drivers... but if you watch videos of him back in the 60s to 80s he was crazy strong
angle of attack is more than likely down, if you are striking down with that low of a launch the ball squeezes up the face creating spin, if you can focus on getting your AOA in a positive and try to strike it higher in the face it will create less spin an less curvature( hardest part of the golf club is just above the sweet spot and creates the lowest amount of spin on the clubface). I'm level two trackman certafied and working on a master's im head fitter for irelands biggest golf retailer so if you are ever in Dublin feel free to come see me for the craic.
Lol garret with a nice smooth golf swing Brodie with the I swing hard but have terrible form and the ball doesn’t go like I want it to what am I doing wrong swing. Gotta love it 😂 slow that swing down and practice form birdie you GOT this.
hitting hard will not make it fly more. Keep TIMING in mind next time you wanna hit a super flexible club, of course speed matters in today's golf clubs but we're talking about 100 years back, take Jack Nickalus as a great model to follow for these kind of clubs. GREAT VIDEO!!! I'd never seen so many legendary clubs in one video, thanks for the info
I would like to see your attack angle... you probably hit down too much on it. If you could get your attack angle to 0 or plus one you would hit high bombs with less spin and carry it miles with your swing speed.
I still have the 90s Big Bertha in the bag lol. It’s a fairway finder. As long as you absolutely square it. About 285 carry on good shots. Also if you hit down like an iron it will spin like an iron. Look how garret really releases upward into the ball.
hey brodie!!! from what i seen it looks like part of the problem is that you need to hit it closer to dead center of the club face.... even being off just a little bit off could make you lose distance and really affect your ball flight.
Brodie was going down way to steep on the ball creating tons of underspin which is why he couldn't get his spin down. He also need to have the ball a bit further up in his stance to have an upward motion at contact so he can still keep height and lower spin.
Angle of attack Brodie. Coming down a little steep which is why you are getting that spin ratio. Get the ball up on the face and increases the angle of attack and you will get more distance
Had more spin on the driver than i have on a 5 iron. As most commenters said, spin is a distance killer - the harder you hit it the less you need to spin it or else you're going to lose distance. 184mph ball should easy carry 310 with proper spin and launch.
Shoulders were out of whack from swinging so hard. You looked like Jim Thome leaning back on a fastball during your final few swings. It looked like your timing between your body and hands was off as well, also from swinging so hard.
Swinging that hard makes it real tough to get any roll - either going to launch high and land soft or launch low with a mess of spin. Depending on your attack angle the ball might be ballooning on you too, losing even more distance.
I think your ball spin issue is related to the clubs shaft flex. Since your swing is faster your getting more of a whipping effect so its causing your ball to spin more.
Its because brodie doesn't swing his hips like you should. When he's near contact the hips should be popping up more to basically drag the club thru with the wrists/arms to more pushed contact to slow ball spin. He could probably get more distance doing it with modern drivers as well.
Yeah it has to be the spin rate of the ball. A slower swing will bring the ball trajectory down and increase roll. Also trying to have your hands lean forward slightly at impact will help a lower ball flight and spin.
just an observation. I have no idea if it matters, but I noticed that in Garrett's(SPELLING?) swing he swings on the front of his feet. When Brody swings he is very much on his heels. That may not matter at all, but I noticed it.
Had a blast filming this video. Currently in Jupiter, FL filming BroFive vids! Coming soon!
You were getting too much spin because the shaft was probably a ladies or regular shaft.

Still can’t believe how much spin destroyed the distance

He's even spinning the modern clubs. 123 club head should NOT translate to 310 total yards. That's crazy. Should be in the 330 range.

@@jacobmccain8082 I wonder if those old balls were compressing way too much which increases spin. He was literally hitting it too hard lol
Older clubs have to be struck with more body and less hands and arms. A swing thats more armsy will cause more spin.
