  • In this episode of Expert Voices, Sotheby’s Contemporary art specialist Michael Macaulay discusses highlights from the Collection of Blema and H. Arnold Steinberg, to be offered across a series of sales in New York, beginning this May. The Steinberg Collection stands as one the great private curatorial achievements of the past fifty years, and contains works by many of the most recognized artists of the 20th century, including Pablo Picasso, Alberto Giacometti, Agnes Martin, Helen Frankenthaler, Kenneth Noland and Mark Rothko. Together, these incredible works mirror the progression of Modern art from figuration to abstraction and beyond, providing an exciting and critical reevaluation of how these artists relate to each other and offering a fresh perspective on each work individually. (14-17 May | New York).

For anyone who might be interested! I'm a DMA Music Composition candidate at Michigan State University and I'm heavily inspired by mid-century American abstraction. I had my piece "Brass quintet for Motherwell" premiered this year. Here's a link! soundcloud.com/trevorjsmithmusic/sets/brass-quintet-for-motherwell

Most of these works date from very late in the artist's lives/careers, long after their main achievements had grown rather rigid and stale. They might maintain a sense of the earlier quality, but it seems to have been quite a struggle.

Pretentious nonsense but sly way of putting higher valuations on works that elite have so immediately rises in value in certain markets. Same as land valuations and houses for elite and got ministers always grow in value whilst others depreciate

Some of this so called art is childish, absolute rubbish, as a true artist I scoff at the tricksters that produce it, and the sheep that purchase it

I wish I could remember the details more clearly, but years back a painting from an unknown brought in critical acclaim. It was put on display at an exhibit as a prank. It was later revealed that the artist was a kindergartener. The gallery responded that that proved the artist was a genius!
