It IS a Chimney! And a heater! Its similar to a Finnish Fireplace. The fire in the lower level sends its smoke up the Chimney and as it rises it twists and turns passing thru your rooms 'Chimney' and heats the room thru convection! It produces a nice, non-drying, gentle heat.

I do think this is the BEST and most amazing place you’ve ever showed us. You have been to some cool places but this one is breathtaking.
Also it made me a little sad as well. As part of the Austro-Hungarian empire we had very similar castles in Hungary. After WWII the owners were violently sent away (to make sure they don’t have the power to go against the new regime), their belongings stolen or destroyed and the buildings used as a hospital, school or orphanage.
Now those castles are being restored as much as possible but this one really shows how amazing all those castles were back in their days.
I love the strange sound of the wooden floor when you walk on it.
Yes that thing was used for heating purposes

The chimney things are old fashioned heaters. It's called a Kachelofen. A fire was lit in the base which heated up the ceramic tiles, and they radiated heat throughout the room. Probably more effective than an open fire in such big rooms. People used to collect cherry stones and sew them into fabric bags then heat them up in the oven. They could then be held for warmth, similar to a wheat bag or hot water bottle.

Those things in the corners are like the equivalent of what a boiler is now, they heat hot water and that would have heated the room. Also, if it’s anything like Hofburg Palace in Vienna (which it looks a lot like), then the hidden doors are likely for the servants, there’s likely corridors behind them that the servants would have used to quietly move between rooms and carry out their duties without disturbing the family who lived there.

The large creepy item in the corner of the room is a brick built wood burning stove covered in majolica tiles. It is missing the metal chimney tube that would have come out of the top. They act like giant storage heaters and would have been just what you needed to heat such a large room. They are still used in mainland Europe. Modern ones, metal, not brick, are powered by compressed wood particle pellets and are popular where there is no gas supply or where gas is very expensive. I have a pellet burning stove (stufa a pellet) here in rural Tuscany. It heats my radiators and is the best heating system I have ever used.

The object in your room that appears at about 6:00 into the video (and the similar one at 15:30 and 19:40 and 20:00) is a Kachelofen.
The *German* Wikipedia page for Kachelofen has a good entry on this and there is currently a picture of a similar ceramic-tiled heater at the top of that page. Here's the intro tranlated from German:
"A tiled stove is a heating stove for domestic heating that is suitable for heating one or more living rooms . Tiled stoves are usually made of stove tiles , but there are also tiled stoves that are mainly made of bricks and plastered. It was only in the 19th and 20th centuries that the tiled stove's combustion chamber was increasingly lined with firebricks or provided with flues.
Due to their large mass, tiled stoves are able to absorb the large amount of heat generated when burning fast- burning solid fuels and then release it into the room over a longer period of time."
The Kachelofen is quite a common sight in older buildings in Austria.
By the way, I can confirm what you said at the end of your video: The Sound of Music was not a hit in Austria. I have this on good authority from my Austrian partner, who went to Salzburg University! But the good people of Salzburg like to use it to make money out of tourists with bus tours etc. Having said that, I personally like the film. Even the silly bit at the end where they escape from Salzburg and then cross the border into Switzerland, conveniently ignoring the fact that they would have to travel undetected through the entire province of Tyrol to get to the Swiss border!
Nice to see you in Austria, by the way. And that hotel looks amazing inside - I have been to Salzburg many times (I live an hour away) but this is a building that I have never been into.
If you and Gaby ever happen to be passing through the much more obscure small city of Wels in Upper Austria, drop me a message and I'll buy you both a coffee and cake at Café Confiserie Urbann.

Well, well, well.... the Austrians had it in use for many hundred years ago ! You find it in almost all the castles and manor houses and later on also in the houses of the middle classes! 😉

Great video as usual. I grew up with old style phones as well and my parents used to put a lock on but if you lift the receiver you'll see 2 little buttons that pop up when you lift it off and if you tap each number in the phone number fast it dials it for you so for example the number 8 you'd tap it fast 8 times and zero will be 10 times fast.
My parents could never understand how I was able to use the phone when there was a lock on it haha

This is my favourite film that you've made! I would LOVE to stay there and visit the town of Saltzburg, it looks marvellous, I'm not a huge fan of S-O-M - I like it, and I've seen it loads and I can sing the songs, but my reason for going would be the hotel I think-looks fascinating! Thanks Tim!!

The thing in the corner of the rooms are heaters that was the way they heated the rooms 100s of years ago. You will see them in most of the German old historical buildings .

The things in the corners of the rooms are ceramic/ tailed stow / fireplaces. My grandparent's has one in every room. Their house was build before IIWW.
