This has to be one of Mike Portnoy's greatest drumming compositions. A marvel in it's own right. He trespassed beyond the realms of the Gods to communicate on his original recording, documented in video elsewhere on RUclips. An anomalous level ot talent and skill. Mike Mangini is downright terrifying with the amount of control, detail, and competency of his drumming. The man must be ferocious in his pursuit of excellence to go this far with advancing the craft. His performance here was absolutely beautiful to hear and see. He devoured this track like it was nothing. We are witnessing a once in a lifetime kind of talent with Mangini here.
I've always admired dream theater, even more with mangini, but now i started to see what's really missing. It's not portnoy, its the soul of the band which they all gave and shared on stage. For real now, mangini is a legendary drummer but hes a fucking robot.
He will never. Nobody ever does like portnoy. Its not that "hard" but the groove really super intense. While mangini, offers us a robotic sound. Im personally not into that. His technique is good, but musically, there are no groove.
@@danlc95 Hard to explain in musical terminology, Im not one. so the best I can do is - try compare mangini and portnoy drumwork on the guitar solo part. Not saying mangini is bad, he got all the technical ability but without "colors" that portnoy could provide.
@mufiku - It's a little too "square" for that particular passage. I play it differently too. I usually try and integrate more of that the rhythm that the rhythm guitar, bass, and keys are doing. Portnoy kind of "floated" the toms in that section. Yeah, I liked Portnoy's treatment of that section.
Now that Portnoy is on the abnd again, you see that he refuses to play only 2 Mangini sings note by note, only 2 songs. And easy songs by Mangini era. He "ignores" many details on This is The Life and Barstool Warrior. I find it a little bad, but well, he is the founder and a drum legend.
When you audition a drummer, you don't get a guitarist, vocalist, bassist, and especially a keyboardist to look at the drum skills and say "ah yep, this guy is good". Duh! You get another drummer or even a drum tech to make sure not just skills are there but also the musicality, power, and groove. If you replace Mangini with a robot AI drummer now or even a drum machine, you won't see a difference.

Shut up you pretentious clown
I think this must be the only song where i have to admit Mangini plays it even better than portnoy. He´s got a lot more foot control
@@felipedromundo8861So hard to say for me.
fuck, JP is flawless at solo
God damn right! 🍻

I think Mangini plays it just fine
Not really but at least he tried his best
Mangini can never play that drum riff during that guitar solo.

Mangini e um baterista sem comparações. Toca demais e até mais que o Portnoy. Mas o DT não é não DT sem o Portnoy.
Mangini changes the drums to much he plays that hit hat to much instead of a cymbal
Drummers crash ride the cymbals too much anyway. It's cliche and boring.
