The reason I keep coming back to this is because at 4:04 onwards he hits the snare on the same note in each bar, while moving all around the kit. A true master of the kit at work
Someone give him the award for best drummer right now... Wow, he already has 29 awards!!! XD It's for this and other reasons that he is one of the biggest inspirations for 99.9% of drummers in the world!
@@ShmeeGrim Oh yeah Panic Attack is also great! It was actually the last song I played before I got tendinitis and had to lay off drums for around 8 weeks lol
@@acgm046 It was at first, but once you've practiced it enough you really get into the flow of it and you can start to improvise with variances of it, as I think Portnoy is doing here as well. It gets tougher when he moves to the stacks on every up-beat though lol
Everytime someone says Portnoy is overrated I come here for comfort and reaffirmation, especially at 04:04. I really don't see any other drummer of his age doing something like this.
Travis Barker does alot of these fills but outside of these two, I don't hear it much anywhere. Symphony X sort of approached this without going full in, but that was the late 90's..... :\
omegapwnZZ Usually I can follow a drum line by watching what each hand is doing seperately. Didn't work this time! Had to follow each piece of hardware seperately. Insane
Hands down one of the most well written and technically proficient drum pieces. The pull it creates during that guitar solo is massive! I used to re-listen from the solo breakdown onwards on my green iPod nano for hours on end whilst teaching myself to play the drums.
The thing I like about Portnoy, other than his amazing writing and playing ability, is the fact that he uses ALL the pieces in his kit at some point. There aren't any extraneous things that only get used once or twice per set (with the exception of the gong used in Six Degrees). The most amazing drummer ever.
Man just used every single drum and cymbals in his set.. crazy drumming this. The amount of energy required to keep going on non stop for 6+ minutes.. 🥵🥵
Absolutely wild to see Portnoy casually jam to this! So much going on and different time signatures! This song took me forever to learn but I’m proud I can get anywhere close to this beast of a drummer! I’m really mad that no one is talking about Portnoys vocals that echo/duet with the lead singer!??? I was so pissed once I learned this song only to discover he’s also singing while playing this 🥹 Insaneeeee! Easily one of the greatest drummers of all time! Top 4 or 3, without a doubt no one can tell me otherwise. Now I gotta go listen to Panic Attack 😂
And he is with the Lamb of God shirt, I see him in Argentina 2024 and he es just amazing, I dont know how many years and tous and he just do it SOOO easy, my hero, by far
Dude's crushing it he sounds amazing his set looks amazing his fills are gigantic his technique is perfect it's double bass is immaculate I love dream theater also nice shirt
Practice is one factor. Plus when you become acustom to your instrument, especially for playing it for that many years you really don't have too much trouble coming up with or remembering things.
There is lots of cut in the video bro'. It's from the Making Of of the album Systematic choas, that's why. But yeah he can do that during a full live show
God damn that breakdown in the middle fucks me in the ears everytime, trying to play that shit fuck me, I can get like a quarter into it then I'm lost.
I just tried cover this song in my drummer, this is the only song in all my career that I can't finish for this part 4:04, I love you Mike but why you are make that God's loops? We the mortals sometimes can't reach to high XD jajaja
This is definitely the best work of portnoy, not my favourite overall but the fact that he does a third of all of the vocals while doing relatively hard parts..... And then the instrumental section.... Mike portnoy is at his best in this song
The drumming during the guitar solo is pure genius.
I could listen to it for hours ! Oh wait ! I do !
lebaiiii
@@avipnrmnsyh ya emg gk gampang bang buat dilakonin di bagian part itu
Up until now, I havent see any good cover of this part. Even mangini couldn't do it. The groove is too hard on this one.
I know right.
4:04 this is why Portnoy was special
Was?
Go up
meaning "was special for DT", I suppose.
manixpc you will never hear anything like this from Mangini .......EVER
@@patdonovan8368 obviously
The reason I keep coming back to this is because at 4:04 onwards he hits the snare on the same note in each bar, while moving all around the kit. A true master of the kit at work
Mangini still struggles with this part.
When I was new to DT and I heard this part, I thought someone else is hitting the snare cause how can he do a roll while doing a constant snare beat 😂
Snare aside, what he does with the hi-hat, with the two hits every bar, but slighly shifted on every other bar, creates one fuck of a groove.
He loves doing that
All while barely holding onto the very butt of the stick lmao. Idk how he plays like that
Someone give him the award for best drummer right now...
Wow, he already has 29 awards!!!
XD
It's for this and other reasons that he is one of the biggest inspirations for 99.9% of drummers in the world!
From my experience, this is one of the best DT songs to play as a drummer by far. It is so fun
Fun my ass, it's dowright brutally painful :))
Keeping that groove going during Petrucci's solo must be TOUGH AF.
This and Panic Attack are tied for my favorite to play
@@ShmeeGrim Oh yeah Panic Attack is also great! It was actually the last song I played before I got tendinitis and had to lay off drums for around 8 weeks lol

The idea is massive and well executed
Its mesmerizing. The song itself is so unique i constantly caught myself thinking if its because its so odd or pue geniality ( might be both)
It's cool but the sticking is not complicated... basically single strokes, just hitting different things.
@@aakkoin Yes, but the coordination and the syncopation it's what makes that pattern tricky to play

4:04
Portnoy's final form
he hits the snare every 2nd and 4th quarter note, while doing everything else, listen for it, its godly
omegapwnZZ Usually I can follow a drum line by watching what each hand is doing seperately. Didn't work this time! Had to follow each piece of hardware seperately. Insane
Totally agree. Ultimate Mike Portnoy.
And starting at 4:50, he hits the chinese(?) cymbal on the & of pretty much every beat, while still doing the snare backbeats. Insane
@Wednesday I don't know who is more technical...but I know one thing 200%: Portnoy is a genius!
4:05 Why is Mike Portnoy such a badass? Literally my favorite part of the song
@Ash ish Because it's fucking awesome, and hard as hell to play.
@Ash ish because you would have to keep up to 3 differents time signatures only in your instrument. hahah
4:05 starts one of the greatest drum grooves ever played. 4:40 is when he kicks it up a notch with that ride cymbal.
if mike portnoy sits down at his drums he becomes something "more" than a drummer, hes something like a scientist on the drums! simply amazing...
Facial expressions
yes. indeed very well put
his right hand at 4:41... Its like floating and hitting everything. Magic
My favorite era are always 1999-2009. I missed those eras. Those are always my favorite songs.
Mike Portnoy in a Lamb of God shirt is enough awesomeness to make a lesser man's head explode.

5:53 he hit 6 fuckin' cymbals at once
Wtf!!

I noticed the cymbals playing from the record and I end up get that ‘yes’ feeling watching Portnoy playing here
Ok...as a guitar player...at 4:04...that's one of the best musical things I've ever heard...Mike Portney is a genius.
Petrucci + Portnoy = one of best music creation
Seriously. That is one of the most technical things I've ever heard on drums. The first time I heard that part I was just in awe. Amazing.
nevermind...

Its just perfect
13 years since this video is up and I remember watching it just when it came out… This song rocked then and will always rock! Thanks Portnoy for this.
That kit is just OMFG....GIMMEEEE!!!!!!!!
The control he has is AMAZING
Mike is a God!!! What else can you say, the grooves, fills, time signatures, are phenominal

Dream Theater: How many drums can you hit one one beat?
Mike Portnoy: Yes.
Mike Portnoy is a fucking god...
it's insane how his brain can manage all of that at 4:05. Always an amazing drummer.
This song shifts time signatures a lot, especially in the intro, where it switches between 5/8, 4/4, 15/16, and even 17/16. 0_0
no one in the history is more creative than mike portnoy on high hat ....
except Danny Carey
Still in awe in 2019

i love this song! even Lbrie's nazalised voice has changed really awesome song!

I invented the drum kit
His signature Pro Mark 7a 420 Millennium's. I love those sticks. Pro Mark makes the best drum sticks hands down.
thats a pretty cool groove right there! perhaps the only true Portnoyesk drum groove on SC. I miss them...
