The tail lights have already grown on me. It looks Swedish cool. Almost Classic. I just wished they used a better rear suspension set up but y'know, I haven't experienced it yet.

A swedish girl would say the german cars are more sexi... basicly the tail light is ugly, no one would turn their head to look at it again.. sorry mate

MotoMan, I just have to say that I am impressed by how well informed you are about the cars that you report on. Im Swedish and I didn't know half. By the way, I had 3 Porsche, 1 Audi A8, 1 Range Rover and currently a Quattroporte. But Im so impressed with the new V90 that I just ordered one, a T6, with 21 inch rims. A stunningly good looking car. So, thank you for a perfect car show. Peter

Why do people talk so negatively about Volvo's in general while at the same time stating their great cars. I think brand snobbery is a void statement and is not relevant. Volvo deserves the same respect, no more, and appreciation as a lot of the competition. They make damn good cars and always will. They can make sporty cars, 850R etc, they make extremely safe reliable cars whats more important how fast you can go or your life your car isn't worth anything if your no longer around to enjoy it..

Great review. Lots of info. Thanks for posting. I bought a 2017 Volvo S90 T6 Inscription about a week ago. I bought this car over a MB, BMW and Audi because first, it's a new design unlike MB, Audi and BMW's which haven't really changed their design shape in a number of years and also, the interior in the S90 is the best out of the other brands. Also, it is more my idea of what a luxury car should be. The iPad touchscreen just makes sense for a consumer that uses a Surface Pro and an IPad pretty much every day. The voice commands control temperature, navigation, phone and some car functions so I don't have to fiddle around at high speeds. The safety equipment makes you feel confident at any speed. The sound of the engine is my only gripe but realistically, it is quick and I doubt anyone in my car cares since the interior is so luxurious. There are even mood lights that can be changed to different colors or will change according to the temperature. The look and feel of the interior is more premium to me in the S90 than it's German rivals and the exterior is simply awesome. To me, with the long aggressive hood on the S90, it looks alot like what the BMW 7 series should be if the BMW didn't have that egg shaped cabin. The S90 looks sleeker and sportier than the BMW. I'm very pleased with my purchase though I do miss a V6 engine a bit. Volvo looks great, drives great, feels great to sit in. They have really stepped up their game and they are a contender now.

Hahaha I love your description of ECO mode! From now on I will make sure to call it Celery mode! FYI the new S90/V90 does come with a manual transmission in the D3 and D4 FWD models but only in Europe.

Lovely review, keep up the good work! I too grew up on Volvos so have a soft spot for sitting in the back seat of one. Though when it was my time to move to the front, I was horrified by their handling and quickly ran off to... Subarus - go figure. I sincerely hope "good driving dynamics" will be part of Volvo's new vocabulary in the S90 and beyond, alongside the luxury interior and classy design.

A well equipped S90 is about $62,000. A similarly equipped Genesis G80 V6 AWD is about $54,000. Both are great road cars and loaded with safety features, and are about the same size, except the Genesis is a rear wheel drive platform and the S90 is front wheel drive. It will be interesting to compare the two, but for the money, I would take the Genesis.

I am definitely going to consider the S90 Polestar version. As I said in the Part 1 comments...I am going to wait one year so that I compare the latest versions of the MB E Class, BMW (new) 5 Series and Audi (new) A6. I've configured this new S90 and the new MB E300, and I definitely like the fact that almost all of the newest driving and safety technology (and Nappa leather) is standard on the S90 Inscription, whereas all of these items are expensive options on the MB. My rough estimate is that a well-optioned MB E300 will be est. $75kusd vs. about $65kusd on the S90 - comparably equipped. If the S90 can give me a very quiet cabin (there's a surprising amount of road noise when sitting in the rear seat of the MB), excellent seats and some fun driving dynamics, I will definitely seriously consider buying it.

The S90 is a beautiful, it is good to see Volvo coming out with a new look with such great interiors and the safety technology is also great. There are a few cars out or coming out that also catches my eye. The Genesis sedan, soon to be named the G80 is a great example of a vehicle with some nice luxury features along with great safety technology. For a mid-sized (A6, 5 Series, E-Class) car, it has a lot of interior space and drives quite well, plus it is a nice looking car. The upcoming Cadenza also looks nice (not classified as a luxury car in the US) with some luxury touches. I've had the BMW 5 Series in the past, loved the look of the Audi but wasn't thrilled once I drove it, never been a fan of MB and the test drive, back then also didn't wow me but the new one looks nice. I did have an S80 for a bit and it was better than I expected but small on the inside than my Optima which is about the same length, had the 4C suspension and sport mode was where I preferred it to be set.
At this stage, the Korean and the Swedes have my attention but it will come down how they drive, although I am really interested in the Volvo S90 and XC90 at this stage, an R-Design or something sportier would be nice. Not Polestar sporty though as that might be too much. In a nutshell 3 choices but until I get a chance to drive them, I can't say for sure.

I have a soft spot for volvos, always liked their understated appearance. Designwise I think the new S90 looks great, very classy, I'm not a fan of the taillights though. The interior on the other hand is just perfect, volvo has nailed it with their recent interior designs, very organized and clean.
That being said, if I had to chose I'd probably still go for an 2017 E class, since I like the exterior more and the engine selection plus the tech offered has more appeal to me.
And thanks for the videos, always informative and on point, no overdone jokes or forced emotions. By the way, have you ever lived in europe by chance? You seem to have a british touch, but you do sound american as far as I can tell.

That complex engine and Frame rear end massive hump in the middle on the frame all fit in the car and I assume the new wagon. The car looks amazing, flawless interior. Always a fan of Volvo. My problem is the engine, everything about it. I just wont ever understand the combination of a full size saloon with a 4cyl engine. Then there's the sound.. By God. If you are not gonna make it sound good at least silence it all you can. It's like you are riding in this big majestic floating fancy tank then when you press the gas you feel like you are riding a Toyota Echo.

Oh MotoMan! Volvos have had "grunt" for years now. My R design S60 hits 60mph in 5.1 sec and there are V60 RD tests claiming 4.9. And it day to day driving power is effortless and smooth. The R Design XC60 handles crisply, one of the best in class, and is pretty quick as well. I had one of those too. I'm sure you knew this when you said that. So why?

After pricing out a fully loaded T6 AWD inscription, and I think for the price you cannot beat the price. I would own one, but I still have love for the new E43 AMG coming out in 2017. The volvo is on par with the E class, and in my opinion far ahead of the 5 series and slightly better than the A6. I just wish Volvo makes a rear-biased AWD system, but that is me just nitpicking.

I think it's unfair to compare this car to an M or AMG-series, leave that for the polestar version (if it'll be any) or "maybe" the R-design version. What do you think of it after comparing it to 5-series, E-class and and A6 series (driving on the roads like you did)?
To your question: First off, do you not think it's competitive to the 5-series and the E-class or did I misunderstand you? Also yes, this is a car I would buy (very bias since I'm Swedish). But a car that's really making it hard for me choosing this is the new Audi A6, god its gorgeous..!

Volvo, in the US, has done well with the XC90. We're SUV crazy at the present. But selling a $50,000-$60,000 5 series/E class competitor with a 4 cylinder engine, no matter how powerful, will be hard, as these buyers are image conscious and they offer versions in the same general price range. With resale factored in, the Germans may even cost less to own. The wagon will be prized but again, due to US bias against them, will sell in small numbers. Because they will cost about what an XC90 does and Americans tend to prefer those. These are excellent cars, they just won't sell well. Volvo's only hope is to hit a home run with the new XC60.

    • @theotalma9063
      @theotalma9063 8 лет назад +3

What's confusing about It? If hands are off the wheel for more than 15 seconds, the driver is warned to put his hands back on the wheel. If he doesn't comply, the system deactivates.
Like all current production systems, it is semi-autonomous rather than fully autonomous. The driver is responsible for controlling the car at all times - not just supervision - with the system providing assistance with steering, speed regulation and maintaining a safe distance from the car ahead.
Allowing the driver to remove his hands from the wheel sends the wrong message that those hands, and consequently eyes and mind, can be used for things other than driving.
That creates a dangerous situation when the system screws up - which all of these systems do from time to time - because an "out-of-the-loop" driver can take several seconds to figure out what's going on and how he should react.
Even if the driver is paying attention, not having hands on wheel can increase reaction time by 1-2 seconds which may be crucial in avoiding an accident. Keep in mind that, at 65 mph, a car travels nearly 50 ft in half a second.
The problem some people have is that they think of these systems as being responsible for controlling the car until, say, the lane markings become unclear, and control to handed over to the driver.
So control is being passed back and forth between car and driver depending on road and traffic conditions, which can lead to in confusion about who's in charge - the driver or the car. Is the car going to brake or do I have to do it myself?
That's the wrong way to think about it. Control is always in the hands of the driver with the system providing assistance as described earlier so the driver doesn't have to steer, brake, etc, as much as he would without the system.

im happy for volvo, but not happy to give them my money. i would rather get an e class. I feel this car would be too difficult/expensive to maintain after the warranty(3 yr in UAE) and they dont even give u a service contract. I might still be interested once i know more about the pilot assist; if its good. The car is as good looking as the e-class. i would prefer a used s coupe and wouldn't mind the expense, but i want an autonomous car. Once and when i get to experience the auto assist and compare it to the e class ill make my mind- i have a gut feeling its overrated. Sorry volve, but ur car, warranty duration, lack of free service contract and my doubts regarding ur pilot assits just isn't convincing enough to pay that much for the over priced s90.

We are entering an era where cars are designed for foreign markets. It no longer matters what we in Europe and America want in a car, we simply get what the tastes of China dictate. This is very obvious in Volvo. It's the interpretation of Scandinavia for the Chinese market.
I prefer the square, clunky Volvos of old. But then I am from Denmark and what I prefer doesn't matter in the marketplace.

    • @GambitSWE
      @GambitSWE 8 лет назад +3

Funny, I work at Volvo and this is the first time I'm hearing this. Chinese market or rather the richer end of it are after bigger (longer) cars, and are more inclined for comfort for the rear seat, as many "owners" have dedicated drivers over there. (look up XC90 Excellence series) I'm talking about "regular" cars here, premium class or not, and not super/hypercars.
The design though, is rather for a global scale, than just for China.

+trefod OK, you had a Chinese guide, but does that really prove anything? I have seen some guides at the plant, but personally never somebody from Asia. I have seen some Asian fellows in visitors clothes, but if they were big shots from Geely or ordinary workers from Asia I do not know. I do know that Volvo has been given free reigns to develop these cars. Have they taken some input from the Chinese?, perhaps. But I doubt that an manufacturer from China who hasn't produced any cars of worth would design and possible ruin Volvo's name.

This is not exclusive to Volvo. All the manufacturers are naturally competing in the largest car market in the world. That market is China whether we like it or not.

Yes, I do agree that everybody wants to have a piece of the cake that is China, though the demand over there has somewhat been satisfied for the moment.
What I objected was the statement that the cars are made/designed for the Chinese market, and that the rest of the world has to be content what the result of these "designs" are, and that's just not true.
The Chinese obviously has some input into the design and manufacturing of the cars, since the poured billions of $ into Volvo, but these cars are still built for a global market in mind.
Every car manufacturer wants to be dominant on their home market. If Volvo would only make cars for China, what would the swedes buy, if their most popular car by far, wouldn't click with the home market? Or if VW made the same in Germany?. If you are bigger than Volvo, you might have more models and span a broader audience, but you still want to encompass as many as possible. Toyota is still making cars with Europe in mind. Kia which has become one of Swedens most popular cars wouldn't wanna loose that I imagine, although the swedish market isn't all that big considering. No, you have to think globally I believe, or you're doomed to fail.

Let's put these aside and go for an electric car!

The dashboard looks like it's been lifted from the Hyundai Genesis. There is not a single outstanding or distinguishing exterior design feature besides sagging ass lights. Good luck in the longer term maintaining dual forced induction. Autonomous driving tech can be purchased off the shelf so what's the big deal? Every manufacturer is doing 2 liter engines now - yawn. There isn't much Swedish left in Volvo and I would not want to own a bastardized brand owned by Ford and now by Chinese Geely - the latter epitomizing bad Chinese cars. It's about as Italian as the Japanese made Fiat 124. I"m South African. I would choose any other competitor.
