  • When self publishing books, whether on amazon kdp or else where, one person you may have to work with is an illustrator. While I've had mostly amazing experiences working with illustrators, including children's book illustrators, sometimes issues arise. So how do you handle them?
In today's video, I share with you some of the issues that may come up when working with an illustrator. I'll also share with you my own recent experience and how I'm dealing with illustration problems.

I used to work for Trafford Publishing, a vanity press back in the day before finding artists for picture books online was easier for authors. I've done 3 of my own picture books, several coloring books, and worked with over 15 authors to help bring their dream books to life, and I have to say you nail things aptly. You must give your illustrator both time but also your vision, and communication is key. I worked with great authors, but also some not so great, and one of the problems for the latter ones were due to communications of what THEY wanted to see, or lack thereof. But the opposite can also be true, with someone who micromanages every aspect of a character on every page, so a balance must be struck. Also, I don't know how much you are paying your artist but generally for cheaper projects you do tend to get cheaper service or artists that cut far too many corners and will use AI art or repeat segments of character faces or bodies to save on time, making things look too repetitive. What you experienced, with a character having shoes on one page and not the next is, frankly, just not acceptable. I am primarily an animal-artist, but when I had to illustrate characters like a pet with specific spots, you better believe I kept it consistent and created a full character sheet for my client to review first, and not a bad idea to request of them. I'm sorry you had this issue and it seemed to have you completely bummed out...but you DID come up with a very solid solution for it and that should be applauded! I hope you can work things out with your artist still since your book is part of a series. And I am happy you also mentioned about paying your artists for their work even if something wasn't panning out, because they did put in the work after all. I would say, though, depending on how the artist is illustrating, things like this should not occur. At least how I worked for my clients, they got to see sketches to approve of, then lineart to approve of, before final inking, and then with a final approval needed before anything ever went to color! I would complete a 28 illustration plus full cover children's book in 3 months at a grand in cost, royalty-free. But if you go with Fiver...well, those artists need to cut corners so where you get them and how much you pay matters as well and sometimes for lower price points you don't get the communications, nor the approval processes. Just something to keep in mind but don't despair! Everything is a learning experience and the kids will LOVE trying to find those differences...they really will! One of my more creative authors had me hide a tiny mouse on every page and asked the kids to try and find it! So fun!

I’m so glad you found my views to be respectful of artists and accurate of the process. Full disclosure, I’ve dealt with artist of ranging prices. The artist I was referring to in this video I have worked with on previous projects with no issues. While it is important that authors set appropriate expectations ahead of time, it’s also important to remember that these artists are human too and have their own issues and emergencies that come up. The key is for both parties to remain professional throughout the process.

Hi Keith. Have you ever made a book with only illustrations and text from AI without editing? I know Amazon asks this now, but I'm wondering if it is okay for me to do this.

I have never done it. That said, according to kdp they’re just asking, during setup, how much of your book is AI Generated. My hypothesis is they’re going to use this info later and, eventually, make this open info for the end user. (Probably I’m the product details section)

All good points that should be shared with the illustrator ahead of time as you learn more things like that. That way everybody’s on the same page too
