Is this guy a veteran or a civilian cart owner leaching off of protected veterans license? 🤔 How could he have owned so many carts, 499 in 1990? He has a sticker on his cart that reads Sgt David Gonzales USMC Killed In Action 3/21/1970. So he’s not David Gonzales. Who is this vendor?
If he’s a veteran, I’m Glad to see he survived Donald Trump’s early 90’s mischief.
In early 90’s Trump lobbied local politicians to ban street vendors - including those with special disabled veteran’s licenses - from operating on Fifth Avenue, where Trump Tower is located.
Look it up. You’ll find this.
They are as much a part of the New York City landscape as the Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building and Times Square. But the presence of street vendors along New York City’s posh Fifth Avenue corridor gave Donald Trump heartburn in the early 1990s. Back then, he, along with other local business leaders, urged city and state officials to restrict vendor access to Fifth Avenue, including the space in front of Trump Tower. One target of his lobbying efforts included a special class of business operators: disabled veteran street vendors.
“While disabled veterans should be given every opportunity to earn a living, is it fair to do so to the detriment of the city as a whole or its tax paying citizens and businesses?” Trump wrote in a 1991 letter obtained by the New York Daily News. “Do we allow Fifth Ave., one of the world’s finest and most luxurious shopping districts, to be turned into an outdoor flea market, clogging and seriously downgrading the area?”
The fight went back to an 19th-century law that gave every veteran in New York the right to “hawk, peddle and vend any goods, wares or merchandise” throughout the state. Designed to create economic opportunities for Civil War veterans, the law has been amended a number of times at various state and city levels. Advocacy groups say what remains today is an overly complicated legal system that has, in fact, discouraged veterans from obtaining this protected license. Of New York City’s 2,555 general vendor licenses, only 105-and only those held by disabled veterans-permit work in the so-called "midtown core," a restricted zone created in the 1990s in part to respond to lobbying efforts of the Fifth Avenue Association. It’s a flawed process, veteran street vendors say. Not only is the number too low, but it has led to abuse of some disabled veterans through corruptive “rent-a-vet” schemes where civilian operators pay veterans to use their licenses in this prized area.
Not surprising how a POS like Chump brings out other POS in his circle.

@@bdog0720 ok we get. You hate trump and blame him for everything. Get a life. And yea nobody wants pushy street vendors clogging up the streets. You do understand that they make life harder for those of us who are actually disabled. What do you think it’s like trying to get past these assholes in a wheelchair… because I know. It’s a nightmare. So which disabled person matters more…? Bring back market squares and let them all park together. This would create space for everyone and it would create a new shopping area. Not ruin everywhere else. And how much shitty food do people need before we’re allowed to say ENOUGH.

@@captain_context9991get what you’re saying, but fifth avenue in New York is a place for the Uber rich. Housing ranges from $1 million to $70million and higher. He could buy a place outside the city but that means he has to commute and traffic is horrendous in New York and public transit is not safe or anywhere near, what the European’ offer when it comes to public transportation. He should have been able to buy a house at some point in time, but may have had to give it up over a divorce or had to sell it to pay for medical expenses. Medical bills are expensive in the states. That and not living within your means are two main reasons why Americans find themselves burried in debt. Also, cannot forget, State income tax rates in New York, range from 4% to 10.9%. Lastly, crime rate is ranked 26th out of the 50 states.

No, dude. This reeks of hustle culture bullshit. $400k supporting two families with 6 kids between them is not going as far as you think in NYC. I respect this dude's hustle, but the system should be better than requiring this guy to sleep next to his carts to keep his spot. They're trying to kick him out because he's a veteran and vets are exempt from payjng vendor fees, and considering the volume that he's pushing the city sees his fee exemption as a source of lost revenue. It's a dog eat dog world out there, but we should be striving to have a society that isn't so cutthroat as to require an old man to sleep in his van to keep his vendor spot so that he can hustle until the day he dies. This man's gonna be hustling hotdogs with one food in fhe grave and the ofher on a tomato slice, and while I can respecf a hard working man, I don't fhink those conditions in society are anything to be respected.
I realize we live in a very imperfect world and at the end of the day people will do what they need to to get by, but the yourube/Twitter hustle culture pushed by the likes of Gary Vaynerchuk and the like is bullshit sold to rubes to take advantage of them working in to futility to the benefit of the advantageous hustle gurus like Vaynerchuk who push it those who listen.

This guy has been working here for 30++ years - every day - with a smile on his face. Rain, Sun, Snow, or anything in between, you can always count on these vendors to get you a hot (and delicious) meal! This vendor in particular is ex military - so when you support him by buying his food, you are supporting the same people who fought for our country. No - it’s not a “healthy” option, but it’s classic New York food and in a way is truly timeless. I will never forget growing up and using my pocket money to buy a dog here and there after school.
