  • The North Coast Symphonic Band presents The Entertainer by Scott Joplin at its Age of Aquarius concert on February 22, 2014 at the Liberty Theater in Astoria, Oregon. Performers are Shelley Loring, piccolo; Carole Anderson, clarinet; Bob La Torre, trumpet; John Hammond, trombone; Dennis Hale, tuba; Barbara Bate, piano
One of the classics of ragtime, The Entertainer returned to international prominence as part of the ragtime revival of the 1970’s when it was used as the theme music for the 1973 Oscar-winning film The Sting. Composer and pianist Marvin Hamlisch’s adaptation reached #3 on the Billboard pop chart and spent one week at #1 on the easy listening chart in 1974.

This must have been a reunion of. Former members of The New England Conservatory Ragtime Ensemble. I saw them perhaps 30 years ago at Meadowbrook Michigan. One of the most delightful evenings I ever had.
Gunther Schueller has passed. I hope one of his students returns to the school and resurrects the group and the music.
