as I was listening to this I was imagining one of your analyses, seeing the themes highlighted in the different staves as they pass from instrument to instrument! I love the harmonies in this one, how they are tied together with the most beautiful and creative phrases. It is woven together so well.
@@davis-editions Is this your arrangement? If so, first, it is just fantastic. Secondly, is it available for purchase? Our family has a horn/trumpet/trombone trio (those runs that the euphonium throws off so casually my be a challenge...) and we would love to play it!

Schön musiziert! Nur frage ich mich, ob statt der Trompete nicht ein Flügelhorn sinnvoller gewesen wäre.. dann wäre man in der Hornfamilie geblieben. 😉
What fun. Beautifully played by all. Understated and clean. She is bringing attention to the beauty of the horn and, I am sure, is an inspration for many young women horn players. She is the best hire for the Berlin in 100 years!
An old favourite but better I was able to sing the Flanders and Swann 'Ill wind' to it, enjoying meself enormously (sorry, rest of the family). Loved the music, thank you.
I love euphonium and french horn. If Tamas could have played his part on flugelhorn, it would have been so sweet! Congratulations to all of you for taking on a full orchestra composition with a trio.
Sarah Willis achieves a luminous, weightless freedom of tone the like of which I haven’t heard before. One of my favorite pieces, and now my favorite performance.
One of the best examples of this ever. When in high school in the 1960's I listened to the Dennis Brain version so many times I wore out the record. So that tends to be my point of reference. Sarah Willis is displaying a similar "lightness", almost playfulness, in style here. Not trying to play over the other instruments, but with them. So many others play it in a heavy handed manner. That was also a pretty amazing arrangement for just three instruments where it sounded like there were twice that many. I already know that Sarah Willis is a horn player to pay attention to. This just underscores that.
Yes. 1960s, Dennis Brain -- my point of reference too (1956 to be exact)! And yes, Willis does share in his lightness. Saying it another way, she is one of the very few who manage to play the horn with a "tee-tee-tee" effect instead of the "twAH-twAH-twAH" that so many -- even several of today's best-known soloists --- seem to think is the "normal" horn sound.
Thank you to Lt. Col. Sam Rhodes, my secondary school music teacher for introducing me to this piece 60 years ago. It made me want to play the French horn. Never happened because my parents couldn't afford the instrument or the lessons. But now, thanks to RUclips I can listen to some great musicians playing the music I love. This is stunningly beautiful!
Stephen, save your pennys, I did and bought a trumpet. “A dream is a wish your heart makes.” It’s never too late to learn something new. In the words of a famous (or infamous) president,”Come on, man!” Let the good times roll! We’re not getting younger and think how many recitals we had to attend and endure. We can give our own. It’s payback time, baby! I’m 84y/o, we’re running out of time! Ed 🇺🇸
Beautifully payed Sarah. Absolutely flawless performance. Never heard it played with such a gorgeous full rich yet focussed tone. Salut! Great arrangement too and lovely playing by your colleagues. Great stuff !
Very nicely done -- a tight little arrangement. Brings back all the memories of the first time I heard Dennis Brain play this very movement on a 78 r.p.m. in my parents basement 55 tears ago. He played with the Philharmonia and von Karajan conducted.
So wonderful performance!!! Bravo!!! I am a big fan of Sarah Willis. She is one of the best Horn player in our time. Her sound is warm and so expressive.
That was beautiful Sarah. I love listening to the French Horn and I can always pick it out at concerts, or any music with a horn playing. Wish I had never stopped, but life happens. I did try renting a horn a few years ago to try and get back into it, but it's been 40 years ago for me. I should have signed up for lessons to give it a fair chance. Who knows what the future holds. Just happy to listen to you play for now.
My Mom, a very accomplished piano player, stopped playing altogether in her 30s, because she felt she could never be as good as the best. That always made me sad, plus I couldn't understand it. Myself, I will play rubber bands on a cigar box if that's the best thing I have, just so I can have some music with me. You should definitely get a horn, play it and enjoy it.
I bet you can still remember the finger combinations if you put your hand on a horn. I thought I couldn't after 12 years, but sure enough it all came back. Tone stunk though!
Utterly brilliant. Mozart is my favourite classical composer, and the Rondo is my all-time preferred listening choice. I was captivated by the delightful playing, especially the elegant, effortless, total mastery of the horn! What a pleasure. Of course, after listening to the piece, I immediately revisited the Flanders and Swann vocal version (I think entitled "An Ill Wind", if my memory serves me correctly). The Rondo, tempo-wise, is so similar to 6/8 jig-time, as exemplified by thousands of traditional Irish dance tunes, which (as a dedicated folk musician) particularly endears the Mozart piece to me.
Outstanding! I played this for State Solo and Ensemble competition in Texas when I was in high school. I got a 1st division at both regional and state, but I say that her quality made my performance sound like something from a scratchy old record. I love Mozart's horn concertos because they were such a joy to play. Well Done Sarah...Well Done!
Takes me (waaay) back to my childhood. My dad loved the horn and owned a recording of Mozart’s horn concertos, performed by Dennis Brain. We listened on weekends when he was home from work, and before long, I could sing along to all of them. So this was a delightful treat, and beautifully done. Thank you!
I love French horn It always give a feeling of looking a beautiful flower in a foggy day A hazy beautiful voice Thank you very much for brilliant performance Have a wonderful holiday Stay safe God always bless you guys
The French Horn is such a beautiful instrument that I miss playing dearly. I was very good in high school and quickly moving toward playing horn as a career. Unfortunately, the top band required marching during football season and I was no good at that and did not excel. One day after marching, a fellow horn player pulled a knife on me and threatened me to march better. I quit band that day and feel like my future and passion was ripped out of my soul. I haven't touched a French Horn since, but I do hope to play again one day...now that I am 30 years passed that asault. This is beautiful music that I wish I could have been a part of.
I've loved this piece since I was a kid. This version is *very* nice indeed, those 3 instruments really do an excellent job of conveying the full thing. (I do *also* love the Flanders & Swann vocal parody of this piece :-) )
I'm amazed that this could be arranged so well for 3 voices. The performance is fantastic, but I'm even more impressed by the arranging talent.
as I was listening to this I was imagining one of your analyses, seeing the themes highlighted in the different staves as they pass from instrument to instrument! I love the harmonies in this one, how they are tied together with the most beautiful and creative phrases. It is woven together so well.

The fullness of harmonics of the Horn and Euphonium combined makes the trio sound like a larger setup.... Bravissimo!
Exactly what I was thinking! So beautiful..
Maybe a tuba in there would’ve been better
Fantastic,wonderful cotton sound.

So true. However it also shows Mozart's genius to express complex musical ideas in forms that can be simplified.
Nice to hear a Euphonium accompanying a French Horn.
Or, just another case of the euphonium playing the horn cues!
Even better, an Euphonium in tune
That's why I play both!
Yes, I do enjoy this spirited performance! Who needs the orchestra?

it's nice to hear the delicate dynamics of these horns without having to compete with the rest of the orchestra...

If Mozart was still around he’d be laughing historically - I mean hysterically - a YUUUGE compliment! Sweet piece.

He would be asking what happened to the frasing. It sounds like midi. Great horn playing but really no feel.
