- Taking a cue from an earlier interview done by Roddy Piper in the Vancouver territory in 1980, Rick Martel employed the same idea to great effect in this interview regarding his latest opponent, Sadistic Steve Strong (a.k.a. Strangler Steve DiSalvo). The interesting part is that Martel was present during the aforementioned Piper interview. As they say, a good idea should never go to waste! This interview is from the summer of 1986 and conducted by Albert DiFruscia, the regular interviewer for the International Wrestling promotion and the nephew of promoter Gino Brito. Enjoy!

I like how Martel's was different than Piper. Piper's was more slower to establish himself as a psycho whereas Martel looked really REALLY pissed off lol

Apparently the trick behind this is to go full speed ahead and do it, otherwise you'll just knock yourself out.
Jim Cornette explained it on one of his podcasts. There is basically 2 things they do to prep the bottle. One is you take the bottom off then glue it back on, this makes the bottle somewhat easer to smash since the bottom comes off easy and doesn't hold the rest together. The second thing you do is some combination of putting the bottle in a freezer overnight then just before you going to break i over you head you put it in a fire/somewhere hot. This makes the bottle very brittle

I did this and actually broke the beer bottle and lacerated myself badly required 38 stitches and bad bruise lasted a week...lol

I think there was more to that bottle than meets the eye. It was probably pre-cracked as a real bottle probably would have given him a concussion.

My younger cousin years ago once got hit with a 40 once bottle in a fight and took it like nothing lol, He was bleeding like crazy for a couple hours but still. Maybe it was the adrenaline that made him not feel it idk

When Piper and Martel bottled themselves, does anyone know was it a work, or a legit glass bottle they shattered on their heads and then bled naturally.

This was faked. It was a sugar glass bottle. You can see exactly where he slapped the blood packet at on his forehead.
@@gaylordfocker7990 sugar glass doesn't cause lacerations like that. The trick is in how that bottle can be broken. If someone hits it in the "perfect" place (just like it was an egg), the blow won't feel as hard.

Ouch, Martel was one of the best. He was definitely under utilized in the WWF and should have at least had an IC title run considering he was a former AWA World Champion. Martel wrestled greatest like Harley Race, Bob Backland, Jumbo Tsuruta and Nick Bockwinkel, along with many other greats. I'm sure he would have fit well in the upper card and it's too bad his career was cut short by injury while he was in WCW.

Yeah it's called sprinkle red dye in your hair and use a suger cane bottle with water in it. Once you smash the bottle with the water the dye looks like blood. Now you know the trick. Do not do this at home folks
