The fact that Jeff is in a position of power being the leader of the club is a major problem in this issue. For the right cause of action is that he should have been removed from his position at the club. Also for Jeff to say that no player is bigger then the club is true but no official is bigger then the club as well. The player and partner were the victims and Jeff was in the wrong and should have been asked to remove himself from the club in the circumstance. I'm sure that Rioli would have remained and played out his career at Hawthorn if Jeff left.

There isn't much racism in Australia. However, I was on the bus with some Australian nationality (whch I won't mention for risk of offence) and they were abusing Asians and Indians. Yet the same nationality claims others are racist towards them. In the city (capital city) they're in front of the train station openly abusing others while drunk, often directing their attention to immigrants. No one says anything. Everyone just quickly walks on and forms their own opinion. But it happens every day of the year. If you try to stop their drinking, or move them on, then its racism. I'd say we're helpiing them and doing them a favour.

I love Cyril, as I love Lewis. Lets take the lens of political correctness off for a minute and call it for what it is.
A joke about ripped jeans from a former state premier/white male to an indigenous australian isn't seen in the same context and humour as if it was made to a Caucasian. The gesture of Kennett giving money to Shannon is reminiscent of "White Superiority" which unfortunately... Jeff's domineering nature does have an air of "I'm better than you" to it.
Now for Lewis. Robbo put him into a corner of severe discomfort and you have him put in conflict of interest where he either saves face by saying the Hawks is toxic like Caro and the AFL painted them, OR he backs the club that gave him an incredible career for 12 years which he probably hopes his own kids will play for one day.
I dont doubt for one second that Jordan was honest to the fault but was trying to frame the situation the right way to not hurt either interest of his (Cyril or Hawthorn).
Once Kennett leaves on June 30 I wouldnt be surprised if Cyril ans Shannon do come back, given the amount of support from the old band these past few weeks

Fair point Hunty49. I don’t know the specifics because I live overseas but if what you say about other indigenous players is correct, then racism seems a long bow to draw. Perhaps there had been other racist epithets hurled before, and the mud was starting to stick to the supporters? Abuse has long been a part of the greatest game in the world. It’s a bit like the pot calling the kettle black (definitely no pun intended) that for years the AFL has ignored the cheers and taunts of supporters, particularly aimed at umpires, and at many of the players, then suddenly calls booing racist without canvassing the spectators doing it. Admittedly calling an indigenous player a monkey or gorilla or ape or whatever the jibe was could be construed very easily as nasty, but we’ve called pug-faced Italians, English men, French men ‘ya big gorilla!’ for decades. What is the crisis point at which an epithet turns racist, or should we have thought of all epithets aimed at difference as racist? In any case, there seems to be a clear position in the minds of those concerned about the racist nature of whatever has been brewing. I’ve no doubt many Australians (whether they pay lip service to anti-racist ideas or not) harbour deeply racist views. I’ve heard them and seen their vile consequences. I just hope the AFL can come back from this very low point in the relationship it has with some of the finest players in the history of the game (and nowhere in that sentence is there any suggestion of race).

The amount of special treatment that indigenous players receive will never be enough for their delicate feelings om afraid. How about we talk about the crime, violence and anti-social behaviour perpetuated by indigenous people in the real world rather than throw a blanket over white people as racists?

By the tone of your comments I guess that ignorance can’t be undone and can’t be reasoned with.
No one is saying that all white people are racist. We’re focusing on one element of life interactions based on a football club environment.
If you choose to simply have two categories for everyone then that’s part of the problem and clearly contradictory based on your own point of view.

@@davidalliex1930 we talk a lot about the plight of the Indigenous people and we espouse their virtues at the drop of a hat. Im simply wondering when the discussion of the disproportionate acts of community violence, spousal abuse, theft and general criminal and anti-social behaviour begins.

@@davidalliex1930 when do the Indigenous leaders look inward and wonder if their influence can be used to encourage their community to take some responsibility for the negative way people may view them. Instead of playing the victim and laying the responsibility at the feet of what we call racism. How can we really agree that the racist Adam Goodes haters ate the same people that admire Eddie Betts? Both are vocal advocates for their community, both are great footballers, both are Indigenous. But it suits one of them to play the victim and everybody, like you, to jump on the bandwagon and pretend that there are no issues in our community at large, that only the Indigenous people can remedy.

Cyril Rioli needs to get a life and not try to damage his former club. The Rioli's sound like the Sussexes. We know who wears the pants (ripped jeans) in each case. Embarrassing.
