    I've spent thousands of dollars on pickups over the years and have gotten fed up with the increase in price. I decided to order some pickups from China and see what they are like. I liked them. The bridge had lots of drive and wasn't muddy in any way. The neck had had a nice smooth bell like tone. The only downside was the amount of lead wire was quite short.

    • @Bobby-wn5yr
      @Bobby-wn5yr Год назад +4

      Yep. One of the key things here is the Chinese one isn’t really a clone of the other. It’s as different a design as there is between many famous pickups. You can change the gauge or number of turns of wire, you can change the type, shape, layout, amount of magnets, you can change the shape and distance of the coils around the poles. That’s really what pickup design is. Otherwise there’s not a lot of difference really. In the differences part of this video it’s pretty clear these are massively different designs really. The poles and spacing are different, the coil shapes and amount of wire are different, the magnets are different. Basically in design these are more different than a lot of models people argue over for 20 pages of a guitar forum thread lol.
      So the fact they sound different when clean is a no brainer.
      What I really take from this is that the Chinese one was a great pickup in its own right and well within the realm of personal preference.
      Abs here’s the thing - those people who argue for 20 pages of a forum thread.. very few of them have actually tried enough pickups to really make them an expert in the field because pickups are expensive. They’ve probably had a few different guitars that may have had different pickup heights and positions and strings before even getting into design, and very few people actually swap in and out 5-10 pickups in a single guitar in a short-ish time frame to do some actual AB testing. Most people go off a recommendation and if they like it they keep it. Nothing wrong with that, but it doesn’t lend itself to speaking from experience. How many people reply to those threads ‘i just put X in all my guitars, works for me?’ It might well do, but really they’re just saying ‘I spend $200 on this and I don’t like the idea something else could have been better’
      What’s great about these Ali express pickups might just be that if you were gonna spend $$$ on a well known pickup, instead you could buy 4 or 5 Ali express pickups, try them out and actually find the one you really like best. It’s an option that’s not really been around much before now for a lot of young or bedroom guitarists. Honestly it’s kind of cool.

      I read stuff like this.
      Yet the top pickup winders have long wait times. And fetch very hight prices for good reason.
      Bet you have a low end guitar, a low end amp, and don’t know any better.
      Sorry.
      I see right through stuff like this.

  • @Bobby-wn5yr
    @Bobby-wn5yr Год назад +6

    What I’m really taking from this is how similar they are. We can see from the images and resistance rating one is not a clone of the other - they are two different design pickups as much as any two different brands really.
    So the fact they have different clean tones was a given really before they got fitted to the guitar. What gets me more is how little gain is needed to clip the differences away. It really doesn’t take much before you can only make out the difference when A/B testing them.
    Given the very different pickup designs the takeaway from that for people who only ever play with gain might well be that maybe swapping pickups isn’t having the effect you think it is.
    But yeah great video & amazing production! Only thing I’d recommend for next time is don’t tell people which is which. I can see a lot of the comments that have the tell tale brand influence in them. Have another video a couple of weeks later that does the reveal. It’ll get more views and give you a better guage of what people thought at the time :)
    But yeah, love your content!

DiMarzios have a hair thin more bass....but only on clean...other than that sustain, distortion ,crunch...and clean too, China sound better to me, the absolutely same as DiMarzio.

  • @anthonystark5412
    @anthonystark5412 9 месяцев назад +3

    Very good comparison. In particular, playing short sections on each makes it a lot more accurate for us, the viewers/listeners. Comparisons which feature 30 second solos completely miss the point, because the listener has already "forgotten" the first 10 seconds by the time the 2nd guitar starts playing.
    The differences were negligible. I know that the DCR was significantly different, but without knowing the henry of each pickup, it's difficult for us to judge whether any differences were merely the result of differing output. I'm pretty much convinced that is the case.

    The only difference I really notice is that clean, the DiMarzio has a very slight bit more bass and on with high gain it also has a slight bit smoother breakup while Chinese pickup has a tiny bit of fizz in the breakup, but hardly enough difference to justify the $85 dollar price difference.

    If you're looking for any kind of "iconic" tone like Super Distortion or PAF, export manufacturers have completely mastered them. You're almost better off buying the cheap pickups since there's no real disadvantage in performance. The only reason to buy boutique pickups right now is if you want something strange or modern, like Fishmans, Unbuckers, or Hot Rails. I'm hyping myself up for the first budget multivoice active pickups lol

  • @neilkavanagh2946
    @neilkavanagh2946 Год назад +10

    When you consider pick ups are just magnets and a copper winding, its not rocket science.
    The same principle applies to phono carts,
    either a magnet moving/vibrating between coils ie a copper or silver winding
    whereas a moving coil cart has a winding moving between two apposed magnets.
    In the case of the vast majority of pickups your cost maybe associated with the fancy packaging and branding.
    do me a favour watch this again and close your eyes.
    A point to remember is we all have what is known as “observational bias”, national pride may play a part in our conclusions and we will convince ourselves of anything that.makes us comfortable within our own paradigm/world view

    Di Marzio is warmer, smoother and has a singing hight compared to the Chinese. I think Di Marzio is better for melodic soloing, for hard rock, jazz fusion and blues than the generic pickup. The Chinese pickup on the other side is tighter and harsher more aggressive sounding maybe it is better for extreme metal styles.

      Honestly, your ears suck then. Lol.
      Even on the first example with the clean tones through my iPhone speakerphone, there is a difference in frequency . The DiMaggio pick ups have more bass. The Chinese pick up/ are very bright like they’re picking up more of the high frequencies. So there’s definitely a difference.
      Whether someone can hear it,is something different all together .

    Can I hear a difference? Short answer: Yes. How much from clean to solo?: Quite! _ Less _ More or Less _ More-More or Less.

    13.7kohm vs 17.2kohm nominal? In what way is that a apples to apples comparison? Also since there is no further thought, American made employs Americans with a liveable wage. Chinese may or may not employ Chinese with a liveable wage. What makes Germany so strong is that they understand this concept and opt for their own homegrown products. Unless you are truly dirt-poor, you should be biting the bullet for the greater good. You think Trump is gonna make America great again with just words while you cheap-out and sell out your fellow Americans for a few dollars more? Think again people. United we stand, divided we fall. Try to learn instead of burn.

      You do realise the USA is only one of the WORLD markets that pickups are sold in? You surely realise that You Tube is viewed in more countries than USA? The rest of the world owes no allegiance to "Made in USA."

    DP100 (has a little more upfront presence (magnet wire type/Cu content)) Donlis (more sombre/distant.. less upfront but also darker) ; Donlis would make for better rhythm in darker metal riffs. DP100, more friendly mainstream metal vibe. Both constructed fair quality. Tone profiles similar, character somewhat different. Both no squeal.
