Dylan Talks Tone Recieves Commision From Some Of These Links
Just for ease of comparison:
3:02 Alnico 2 Bridge
3:33 Alnico 5 Bridge
4:04 Alnico 8 Bridge
4:39 Alnico 2 Neck
5:04 Alnico 5 Neck
5:49 Alnico 8 Neck
A2 bridge & A5 neck were the clear winners here. Bright and balanced with a smoother attack in the bridge, and clear/full in the neck.
My preference as well. Did not like the A8 neck, but all the others sounded good. Whereas the A2 bridge and A5 neck sounded great
Well, one of the most successful PAF set today (Lollar Imperials) are the exact opposite.
I've become a fan of Alnico 4. It kinda solves the "problems" you find with most magnets. Is the pickup too bassy with A5? A4. Is it too spongy on the low end and needs more clarity on the top with A2? A4. Mids too harsh? A4. Not enough mids? A4. lol
Alnico 2 is the winner for me in both positions. Same when I have done my own tests.
I feel like the 2 sounded really sweet allowing us to hear the strings as they are whereas the 5 sounded like it had a little more breakup and the 8 sounded like it'd be great for metal maximizing signal. I've always been a fan of lower output pickups for their clarity and how they play with OD pedals and drive on amps.
Normally, you would adjust the pickup height differently for the best sound in each type. That makes for a slippery slope in doing a "fair" comparison. Weaker magnets like more height. Stronger ones have a wider usable range in distance. A3's are picky about height.
Another challenge here is that pickups may be wound with a magnet type in mind, so any particular magnet might not be well suited to a given pickup.
Very interesting, so the stronger the magnet, the brighter the tone.
My customers really like the Alnico 4, Alnico 6 and Alnico 9. Alnico 6 has interesting properties as does the 9 but they aren't easy to come by, for me anyway.
Well, this showed me that Alnico8's are more musical and versatile than I thought they would be!
I like that Jazzy Alnico 2 in the Neck.
Great sounding A2, Dylan -- it was definitely my favorite in the bridge position. Enlightening comparison of the different magnets as well. I wonder what a ceramic magnet would have sounded like next to the alnicos? Cheers!
me 3
Ceramic will sound "brighter" because it will not generate Eddy current which results a higher Q
That's a great-sounding A2 pickup, particularly in the bridge. The string separation is outstanding. The A5 was my favorite in the neck. The extra magnetic flux helped keep it crispy. I would have thought the A5 bridge/A2 neck would be ideal, but I guess not.
i was always curious about the possible change in sound, tone and response between the different types of magnets. a real ear opener, thanks!
i learned A8 isn't only for metal but can be anything you want it to be. A2 and A5's def for that vintagey thang . . . those thruxtons sound great
A long time ago, I discovered, (by comparing different guitars, then changing the pickups on one guitar), that I actually prefer a higher output pick up in the neck, and the opposite in bridge.
I know, it's personal preference, but it's what works for me.
Great video!
Of course, all this is subjective, and changes depending on the style of music you're into... for me and me preferred style, the A5 was a clear winner. I hardly ever use the bridge pup, always either the neck or middle position. But that said, this was a highly informative video, so thanks!
Nice comparison. Hearing them back to back you can notice a difference for sure. The 2s sounded killer.
Congrats on a new pup!
Sounds great!
Thanks for explaining...
Rock on!
🤟😺🤟
The A2 bridge and A5 would have been a sweet set up in the tele deluxe I just built.
Way to be Dylan, that was really cool to hear. I always wondered that question myself, thank you for that video. It was 5s in the neck and 2s in the bridge for me. Congrats on the new design. Cheers
in the bridge, the alnico 8 hands down winner for me. in the neck they are all okay with the 5 having a slight advantage over the 2, and the 8 having an ever so slight advantage over the 5. i would suspect someone who prefers a single coil sound would prefer the alnico 2. its all subjective.
When you started and were playing that A2 I was like, that is one sweet mf pickup. I love lower output pickups. I was so excited to hear then you decided to sell them! ✌️😌🎸
1) Great video, Dylan, as always really!
2) I just did exactly this with a bunch of different pups that I mounted on 'sleds' to use in my 1981 see-thru 'Dan Armstrong' guitar (that my father and I made) that has that interchangeable pickup scoop swoop). This was specifically for a pickup-brand-shootout, and it worked great!
3) One of my favorite bridge pups has been the Gibson 'Super Humbucker' (I believe developed for Gibson by Bill Lawrence) whick I think was a ceramic magnet pup. Why no ceramics in this test?
Please keep these fantastic vids coming!!!
The Thruxton Aii sounded great with the amp pushed. Buttery and warm.
8.5K is the sweet spot for my favorite sounding bridge humbuckers, congrats on the release of this one, I hope you sell a lot of them. Do you find that there is an ideal winding count related to what number of alnico is used? Do you like to charge magnets fully, or partially? And does a weakly charged alnico V if charged to the same strength as a fully charged alnico II still sound different?
I loved the A2 clean in the neck position. My biggest issue with neck pickups is they're too muddy, I often rewire them from series to parallel to brighten them up. But I never considered swapping the magnets 😏
Try an A3 in the neck-Mud gone
Congratulations the Thruxton is a hit! Sounds most excellent sir. Oh so nice. That’s why I prefer A-II magnets in general. So much tone.
Sounding good Dylan keep creating new pickups for us.
Agree. A2 bridge and A5 neck. 👍
A5 is my favorite.
No Ceramic? People always say they make a pickup harsh/ice-picky, but I've never had that experience. I swapped a Ceramic into my bridge humbucker that had an A5 and I liked it. While it made it a bit brighter, It wasn't harsh, but it pushed the front end of my amp a bit harder which eliminated my need for a boost pedal.
There are different genres of music That's why all those magnets exist
Hi, great video :-), I was wondering what effect double thickness magnets would have in a standard humbucker as opposed to a Filtertron pickup, many thanks.
Always liked a2 pickups the best, and I can't be too far off because it's Slash's go to magnet
Identically repeating tracks, that way people can have a chance at hearing the difference. If I drink my Coke regular but then shake up my Pepsi can, that’s no comparison.
We need to talk about those pickups...
In this comparison I prefer Al2 in a bridge and Al5s in neck, but Thruxton sounds awesome in both positions. Al8 seems good in the neck too.
I really Like The Tone, quality of the ALNICO TWO 👍🏻👍🏻
Those humbuckers sound great
Sounds great! I have one in my cart. One question/assumption; 14k? Apologies if I missed it on the video of your website! Never mind 😬 just saw it on the website. Only one cup of coffee so far!
Holy smokes that Alnico 2 Rocks hard
So if I understand well... you charge the magnets to its's full potential and you didn't normalize the audio files after all? got it right?.... If thats the case, it's really impressive how the A2 sounds even louder than the A5 and the A8. And fuller over the frequency spectrum like a lingle coil-ish. really cool video 👏👏👏
I'm fine with A-II recording, but prefer A-V live to cut through the mix, never can cut through with II's.
Came to check out the A-8. I bought one, but can't decide if I want to stick it in a Strat bridge, or SG bridge(?)
The new pickup sounds great!
Love the name, and I actually liked the sound of the A-2 pick ups better. You done good!
The Alnico 2 was less output and brighter. Sounded good. The Alnico 5 was less bright. Sounded good as well. The Alnico 8 was hotter and had a little of the Alnico 2 brightness.
I wish you would have compared a ceramic pickup as well. I'm getting your 8 Ball pickup in my custom 1 hum Texas Toast guitar.
Congrats! The Thruxton Pickup sounds very good. Have you considered making any your Humbucker Pickups in a stacked Single Coil size for those players who prefer a smaller footprint?
I will not… because it won’t sound the same
So the stronger magnet produces a stronger signal, but essentially identical tonality. Not surprising, but nice to see it tested. I imagine that the winding is the big decider of tonality in a pickup.
Thanks. 😊
That sounds really sweet.
The 2 & 5 sounded almost the same in the bridge, maybe the 5 was a bit more upper-middley. The 8 in the neck sounded great, almost like a paf or burst bucker in the bridge position. First impressions, subjective, listening over phone speaker. But that 8 in the bridge position, I'd play that almost all the time.
Awesome video! ive been wondering about alnico 8s
I just played around a bit with my Floyd rose I had just received, and when I made contact with it and unboxed my EVH Frankenstrat pickup and when I hovered it over the pickup the pickup attached to the Floyd rose? Has my pickup lost polarity or magnetism?
It is very difficult to understand what you wrote. But the most likely answer is - no. To be completely sure, touch some kind of piece of iron on the pole pieces, if they stick, then everything is ok.
Hell yes! Somnium! They're like 5 miles from my house.
Great comparison , love these types of vids. Your A2 sounds great
With that particular pickup, A5 for me on both positions.
That new pick up sounds really nice! Cool name as well, Thruxton Circuit is about 6 miles from my house :-p
My top 3:
1. Alnico 2
2. Alnico 8
3. Alnico 5
What kind of bike to you ride ?
I liked the A2 on that guitar
Sounds good man
Very COOL Dylan!!
I prefer Alnico 5 in most pickups humbucking or single coil. Just seems consistently most pleasing to my ears. Alnico 2 would be second but I still prefer Alnico 5 in most circumstances. It has a clearness about it and good articulation. Dont care for other magnets other than Alnico 2 and 5. Alnico 8 is too much. Alnico 5 strikes the best overall balance.
SD’s Original Seth Lovers A-2 , #1 !
The 2 sounded the brightest to me which I wasn't expecting. I expected a ceramic tone from the 8 but it almost muddy.
This video kinda asks more questions than it answers... The stronger magnets clearly sound thicker and hit the amp harder, but what if you dialed down the input gain on the amp? Would you get a similar sound or would each magnet still have its own character? Or, what if you adjusted the other parameters of the pickup to get similar outputs from each? would they sound different again? Would that be different to adjusting the amp gain to compensate? Do they each feel different to play?
Fwiw I think I preferred the sound of the A2 in this test - clearer than the others, no muddy mids.
I'm very interested in A4 pickups, from what I've heard they're like a cross between an A2 and an A5 and that sounds exactly like what I would like. I'm somewhat interested in A3 but I heard they're even "softer" than A2, so I'm not sure about them, I would really have to try them and see.
Dylan, it would be nice if you had a chalkboard to show what you mean by how the various magnetic types are compressing certain frequencies because I don't know what you mean by your compression theory
Love it!
There’s a… ‘sweetness’ in the A2 that is definitely there but different in the A5. The A8 is too ‘brutal’ for me I’m afraid…
It does confirm what I was thinking about putting in my current build, which will now definitely be a pair of A2s!
Good to see your new A2 ‘Thruxton’! Food for thought indeed.
Those sound great 😶🌫️
Sounds great!
Feels like exactly because the amp breaks up this comparison is a bit.. redundant? The difference in volume going into the amp makes any other difference impossible to make out since it could just be the amps breakup character.
I preferred the A2 and A5 sound
Hi man, I love your videos. Can you make a video about humbucker sized filtertrons? (e.g. Psyclone HB by SD or the Lollartron HB sized). Greetings from Chile man!!!
I had thought A3 was the weakest. You stated order of strength was 2, 3 ,5 etc. Is it not 3,2,4 ,5 etc?
The a2 sounds best I closed my eyes and just listened only opened when I thought wowy and every single time it happened to be the a2!!! At least to my ears anyhow!!!
It's weird on closed eye test my ears favor a ceramic magnet over alnico almost always same with speakers.
The differences are subtle. Especially on the Neck. 2 seems a bit brighter, 5 darker, 8 about the same as 5 but punchier and a touch more low mids. At least that's what my ears are picking up.
For me - Alnico 5 both
Rewatching. Sucking action. I like it. Great video! Thank you.
Guys, I want to swap my Jb JR's polehead screws with gold ones just for aesthetics. I searched all the web but couldn't find. Can someone here help me if anybody here knows where can I find polepiece screws of Jb JR or Lil' 59 ?
Why not alnico 3 like the custombuckers gibson makes?
The different madness yes well make the amp react differently. But not so much difference in tone. It's gain and push and pull with the amp.
So I assume you magnetized these to their full potential. What happens if you magnetize them all to the same level...
Where do we my Larry DiMarzio SD fit on here?
They are ,50 years old
They don't. SDs use ceramic magnets, not alnico, though EVH supposedly swapped in A5 magnets
Also, could you please do a video talking about the difference between a mounting ring, and a directly mounted humbucker pickup?
A2 sounds great, A5 sounds great, A8 = mud.
Please demo with CLEAN sound/ DI sound...
That doesn’t illustrate what I am trying to show …. All you “clean demo” people crack me up
So the wood used for the body of guitar doesn't really matter ?
Someone get Glenn Fricker in here to throw in his opinion 🤣 💀 but seriously the Alnico 2 in the bridge is what I think I will get for the sound I want.
A8 bridge A5 neck
Tonemetals!
The A2 had better clarity than the others. The A8 was crunchy and tight. The A5 was in between having more crunchy than the A2 but lacking the tightness of the A8 it was a bit more fuzzy/ruff around the edges to my ears. I'm generally more of a single coil guy. I've never played an A8 bucker, but out of the pickups i have played, when using a full size humbucker i prefer a moderate output pickup with A2 magnet. I'd be interested to here how the A8 does under high gain. I guess it depends on how hot the coils are wound, but to my ears a lot of hot pickups tend to get muddy when they go into a high gain amp. I feel like the A5 in this video might end up in that camp. Non of them sounded bad. but my preference would be the A2. You can make a clean pickup dirty, but you can't make a dirty pickup clean.
With headphones, I heard absolutely no difference. I have no clue how you heard what you explained. They all sounded great, but no different. I'm starting to think Glenn is right. Not enough difference to make a difference.
I'm starting to agree. Single coil or double coil makes a difference. And after that I think a good well made quality pickup will sound better with more tone than a lot of cheap poorly made pickups. After that, these differences are so tiny I don't know that they make much of any difference. Definitely not as much as the speaker.
I can't hear much of a difference and certainly am not playing like you are so I'm not sure why you aren't explaining how it sounds and plays differently.
It takes a long time to search the internet to find frequency response graphs to actually tell us exactly how changing the magnetic field changes the frequency response. I think you probably know exactly how it changes but for some reason you will not tell us and you won't show us these graphs that you probably have somewhere stuffed away somewhere.
It's always frustrating listening to your videos because you think "he's actually going to show us something, he's actually going to teach you something like you used to". And instead, it's always another sales pitch.
Cant tell any difference in tone other than the compression...
3 is weaker than 2
No one is asking for anything
