Just to clarify; The woman in the article is Robbi Montoya, Executive Director for the non-profit organization, Dorothy Day House. Inspired by people's suffering after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, Dorothy Day co-founded the Catholic Worker movement & it's related mission of providing for the needy (shelter, food, clothing, etc). They have branches across the country.

Most homeless people in Florida have jobs. They are the clerks at Walmart and retail stores. They cook your McDonald's. Their employers only hire part-time for full-time businesses so they don't have to pay benefits. Congress agrees with the employers because they refuse to pass laws requiring full time businesses to hire full time workers, or pay enough to rent an apartment.

This gives them an opportunity to feel safe they have somewhere to go that's warm and they can have camaraderie and counseling just seems like this is a good idea. Yes there's always going to be hiccups Growing Pains for a new program. But this from standing on the outside looking in I think this is a good start very very good start I would like to help and support this keep up the good work God bless everyone. My heart rejoice of happiness to sees that a humans beeing has been fed , clothes , and a safety spot to lay down at night until they had their own permanent housing . They will destroy any housing you put them in because they are addicts.Sadly, nowadays street homeless are drugs addicts, and they are addicted to cocktail of nasty chemicals such as fentanyl, horse tranquilizer, elephant tranquilizer, sedative benzo, rat poison, nitazenes chemicals, P2P based meth, wasp dope, and other nasty stuff. That is in the pills they smoke all the time. They are quickly damaged mentally and physically beyond the point of repair. Street addicts gradually destroy everything around themselves. The only thing they really wanna is to be as close as possible to their fentanyl dealers. If they are functional, they work as fentanyl dealers till they get zombified. We will never reduce street homelessness without reducing the amount of fentanyl and other nasty drugs available on our streets.

We have a lot of empty warehouses in my city. Building is very aggressive here, but they either sit empty because they can't lease them out or a business that was there goes bankrupt and the warehouse just sits there empty. And the shelters here kick you out by 7am. Breakfast is at 6am. Even if you have a place where you can leave your stuff, they still make you leave unless the weather is really bad or its the weekend.

this is under the 'rebuilding together' organization, a national non-profit for 40 years. lots of sponsors, donations, and, of course, government funding, this coming from HUD. i don't know what the break-down is.
while it's great when something like this works, still some things to note, like we don't know what the success rate is (or what 'success' truly even means) -- it's a pilot program that obviously services a very few people, so the success rate at the early stages is going to be a lot higher in the beginning. i understand the concept of trying to reintroduce people back into a conventional lifestyle, but i don't know how effective it really is with such a small sample size and i don't know if these people are hand-picked to show proof of concept or what.
i'll be honest, i trust a homeless charity less than i do goodwill or the union i'm forced to work in, especially when there's government funding involved. this is a ridiculous amount of space in one of the most expensive cities in america that's essentially a variation of no tell hotels. it's easier to help people who want to change, but if all it winds up being is providing temporary shelter until they get bored and go back out onto the streets after the 'gimmes' are helped into a more permanent shelter, then that's a waste of money.
there really is little if any success in these cities. once you find the relatively few out of tens of thousands who want to get clean, get a job, and live in an actual home, they wouldn't be able to afford living in these cities anyway. people with good jobs can't afford there. the city closest to me is dayton, so those people actually stand a fighting chance not to live on subsidies if they can find an apartment and have some help getting started. that's not the case in CA cities. the end goal isn't achievable there without the welfare system.

Yes that is a real problem with a no brainer shelter bring your tent sleeping bag
Trash and drugs with you no curfew no set time it be in at night
Just enough time to get your few hits off the foil or crack pipe at 2am why not another hit a 3:30am

Thousands of homeless migrants heading to the Bay Area

Exactly. Stop ruining my home state and city by just sending all your addicts and criminals here. We don’t have space for them and we’re tired of being threatened by their mental unwellness and drug addictions and violence. Make bad MEN leave, send them back to TEXAS

@@propblast82nd not if there’s nothing but violence and worsening sanitary conditions on the streets because there’s so many unhoused, mentally ill and violent people not having their basic needs met and terrorizing the community regardless of whether you are house or not. As a native Cali girl, I’ve basically tried to relocate multiple times in the last decade due to housing scarcity insanity and just getting screwed cuz everywhere else sucks! But it’s definitely the end of the line for the entire country, so they are pushing local animal rescue advocate low income people and teachers out and letting bad explorer men stay. Tbh I just realized there’s all these train systems that go everywhere. Specifically the California Zephyr straight to Utah. Last time I drove through SLC it was a tweaker dumping ground so I guess it’s a whole ongoing copout to just shuttle your unwanteds on to the next “tolerant place” for meth heads. At some point you either need to get help or you need to stop ruining everyone else’s quality of life by making your problems there’s. I’ve been basically fighting to stay out of homelessness just having to constantly displace myself to escape drug addicts and STUPID OVERCONFIDENT MEN whether they are housed and normal people or even bosses. Alcoholics and drug addiction specifically meth and heroin basically fuels and motivates so much of the crime that keeps happening. How many more catalytic converters do I need to watch be stolen on my block by tweekers while I fear for my life. Idk how people sustain doing hard drugs their whole lives it’s insane, most of them are in a death spiral and we’re just here experiencing their downward trajectory and bad behavior. I’m from the bay, I have trauma, I’ve spent the majority of my life in poverty trying to make enough money on terrible wages with terrible abusive bosses and insane rents jacked up by transplants who moved here to make a profit. I’ve been attacked by the lower and the upper classes my whole life. I’ve experimented with hard drugs and I’ve never ended up addicted to anything chemical. I smoke weed and drink occasionally but that’s it. How many of these people were basically born into drug addiction, left creepy cults, abused and sexually assaulted as children by the church!? And then leave them to terrorize the rest of the hard working and good hearted endlessly compassionate community of true Bay Area natives and the people who come here and adopt our egalitarian ways. This place is destroyed because it became the dumping ground for a society that uses scapegoats as its punching bag for problems that are way bigger and systemic than just people behaving badly. I mean this is why abortion rights being challenged is a mess. So many of these people probably never had a healthy home. Which is why women need more agency over there lives and BODIES!!! HELLO. Give women housing and protect them from bad men. It’s really that simple but they won’t do it. They know keeping women powerless is the only way they will be able to keep the “birth rate up” so they can profit from more and more sick humans. I’m disgusted.

Its great BUT you have to pay for the warehouse, showers lockers and labor to manage and clean its way over 10k per month, I think instead have inexpensive movable lockable fire proof tiny homes on differant empty lots in every county in the us with cameras to monitor and more self regulated maybe 100 homes per acre. There is nothing in the constitution that anyone has to supply housing to anyone that is why people have families and jobs and dont do drugs so they can get away from that chaos and thats why china sells all the cheap crap and its to employ people to get them off the streets. bring back manufacturing.
