    Glad to have found your channel. I'm just getting into sailing. I'm going to build a sailing canoe. That boat design looks awesome.

      I’m in the process of making plans for this boat, hopefully in the next few weeks. I will also sell plans for the skimming outriggers and crossbeam as well which could be put on any sailing canoe.

    I share your enthusiasm and find your theoretical study in the graph charts, very interesting. I appreciate it because I work from mostly intuition, moderated by experience through many years of design and it's good to see it from another aspect.
    I've developed a new mutihull shape which shares some of these design principles (and more), prototyping with 5m beach cat configurations, and I find it frustrating that conventional boat designers can neither fully grasp the potential or understand the principles at work in my design. It is not surprising, however, since the design principles I use do not have their genesis from boat design. Cheers

    Many thanks for the dynamic lift formula. What is the lift area of the skimmer? Can the area be added to Your formula?

    • @markpalmquist
      @markpalmquist  3 месяца назад

      The area of the skimmer is already in the formula. It’s about 4.7 square feet.

      @@markpalmquist Thanks. Is the lift vs area directly related? If area is doubled is also the lift doubled at any given speed?

    • @markpalmquist
      @markpalmquist  3 месяца назад

      @@joeordinary209basically yes but you should only use as much area as is needed and the higher the aspect ratio the lower the drag.

    In comparing the stability of the Hobie 16 to the wingmaran 12, one interesting fact is that unlike the Hobie the Wingmaran depends on forward movement for its stability. Also, can't the Hobie 16 use a trapeze to increase the stability or is that only the 18' version?

    • @markpalmquist
      @markpalmquist  3 месяца назад +1

      Yes, I the hobie has a trapeze so I put the center of weight of the crew 3' over the edge of the windward float. Yes, the skimmer's lift is speed dependent, that is why I added hiking benches so that you can keep the boat level under hydroplaning speeds.

    Why not replace the whole hull with more skimmers? Is the drag at low speeds higher?
    Sailrocket uses a canted rig to decrease the tipping forces on the rig. Wouldn't that let you have an even larger rig?

    • @markpalmquist
      @markpalmquist  3 месяца назад +1

      Yes, originally my concern with using 4 skimmers was that the rear skimmers could be affected by the wave patterns from the front skimmers but now than I see the wave patterns actually diverge it is quite possible 2 on each side of the boat could work. Then if the middle hull completely lifts you would maintain pitch stability. This would require moving rudders horizontally like a catamaran.

    • @markpalmquist
      @markpalmquist  3 месяца назад +1

      Canting the sail to windward only works if you cant it severely enough to put the anchor force in line with the sail force, otherwise the boat can flip over in a gust. For an all out racing boat this can be done but it’s not safe for a production boat.

    • @markpalmquist
      @markpalmquist  3 месяца назад

      The reason the main hull is not a stepped motorboat hull is because it would be very slow in low wind below hump speed, but a boat designed to beat speed records could be designed that way.

    do you have much knowledge or view point of a aquaplaning device?

    • @markpalmquist
      @markpalmquist  2 месяца назад

      If it’s a hydrofoil, yes, but most of my work is with hydroplanes which only have 1 wetted surface.
